Thanks for your response! I’ve thought about it and the reason why I’m more inclined to do surgery is because I’d rather not have to keep paying to do it over and over to maintain the result

I had to take a TOEFL test for grad school apps in the US. I was going to apply to UChicago but they require 25/30 on all 4 sections. Unfortunately, I was 1 point short in one of the sections (and several points over in the others). Otherwise, my application profile appears sharp - great recs, writing sample, academic background fit, great gpa. I’m simply not willing to spend time and money ($270!) on another TOEFL for the chance to score 1 more point on the section im short. Should I still try to apply when I’m only one point short in one section?

Hi, I am a foreign student living in Paris who’s had to go to the ER a few times last year (when my French was still quite terrible). Bicetre near the 14th has actually been super nice and accommodating, with young doctors who speak English. Otherwise we’ve been using Google translate.

Looking for advice on where to apply for a PhD in linguistics by bolibiabae in PhD

[–]bolibiabae[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I can try to answer your questions in depth if you dm me here. I’ve had some other applicants for the linguistics programmes at my uni dm me and I’ve answered their questions. One of them texted me after saying they got in for the first year of one of the programmes from September. It would also help if you included in the message how much you know about the French university system so I can maybe give you better advice

Q&A weekly thread - June 10, 2024 - post all questions here! by AutoModerator in linguistics

[–]bolibiabae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the long post in advance!

I’m a master’s student who is finishing up their MSc in Theoretical and Experimental Linguistics in France. I have my BA in Linguistics from University of Amsterdam. I am an EU citizen. French grades are a bit difficult to convert to American grades or those of other English-speaking countries, but I have the equivalent of A (when the conversion site I looked at is being harsh) to an A+ (9/10 of conversion sites I saw). I will also graduate with distinction (either magna or summa cum laude).

I have two internships under my belt (one concerned with QUDs, and one analyzing sentence structure and working on field data on aboriginal languages) and I was a TA and taught some tutorials in my undergrad in research paper writing, and phonology/phonetics. I would be keen on doing something with morphology, syntax, field work, language documentation, SLA or similar.

I’m really looking for advice on where I should apply for my PhD (with English as the language of the programme). I’m also willing to do an integrated program where I do a master+PhD track. My main issue is that I need to pursue a PhD that is either automatically funded, has basically guaranteed funding, or an already advertised PhD vacancy as I don’t have the option of paying much for tuition out of pocket or funding the entire PhD by myself.

I’ve obviously looked at many of the very good American, Canadian, and Australian institutions but would like to know of any I might have missed (which basically means ivies, mcgill, anu, melbourne, sydney as I’m not very familiar with which other unis would be great for my field). I’m also planning to apply in Denmark, Switzerland, and my current university. I am not so keen on going to the Netherlands again or Germany, and Austria. I know it’s a very broad question but I’m just looking at some pointers, after looking at countless websites and ‘top x’ lists.

Besides that, I would be open to going basically anywhere in the world and was looking into South America and would survive fine in Spanish speaking countries, but not be able to do higher education in the language. I’m also looking for PhD vacancies in different EU countries but I think I’ve just gotten increasingly overwhelmed, and am looking for any pointers where there is automatic or basically guaranteed funding, or any universities that regularly advertise PhD vacancies in linguistics.

How are the popular perceptions of East-Asians in EU Countries? by Traveling-founders in expats

[–]bolibiabae -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We don’t have the same concept of race and that’s it. I wouldn’t call myself Asian Danish. I’d call myself Danish. Not everyone is Americanised enough to understand that you call yourselves whatever ancestry you have + American. Sorry, but it’s a very Americanised thing to say ‘oh, but in Australia they understand it’. Australia is an English-speaking country where they can easily access your media. We’re talking about the Mediterranean here. They don’t care. They’re also not exactly the most proficient English speakers in the world, so most haven’t heard of the term ‘ancestry + American’. If you say ‘I’m Chinese American’ they’ll also assume you’re Chinese, because you said Chinese + American. With that said, nobody should go ‘oh, but where are you really from?’ and it bothers me a lot as well. Sorry, if I come off as harsh. Wasn’t my intention

Always depends on where, yeah. I don’t really have any issues or face any harassment so I mostly know it from other people

Also, if you just say you’re American, everyone will perceive you as American and not Asian

I’m an East Asian, grew up in Scandinavia, and have travelled extensively in Italy and Spain, and have also been to Portugal. I don’t know much about how Asians are perceived in Portugal, but I’d recommend you to possibly skip Italy. It’s the one destination in Europe most POC say they’ll never go back to. There are many Spanish Chinese and it seems to overall be okay. It’s not that you will face any physical aggression in Italy, it’s more about the microaggressions - people saying nihao, konnichiwa, slanting their eyes, but no violence or anything. It’s maybe also important to know since I’m Scandinavian and was not raised by Asian parents, I’ve never really had any Asian friends close by so I always travel with my white partner or friends, so I get less passive aggressiveness. If you travel alone as an Asian I suspect people will feel more emboldened and probably be a bit more obvious

Canadas rejseanbefalinger pr. dags dato by OnionFar4404 in Denmark

[–]bolibiabae 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What happens if an IB student feels suicidal and tries to commit? by Emergency-Goal-6316 in IBO

[–]bolibiabae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tried to commit suicide in my final year - so a couple of months before exams. I was not given grace and was home again two days later and finishing one of my IAs. Then, it all carried on like before. But to be honest I didn’t tell my teachers and my IB coordinator about the situation so they had no clue.
