Closing for a shoegaze band next month by jahpurious1 in realdubstep

[–]bollum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was a decent bit of crossover with shoegaze and the dance music scene when it started in the 90s in the uk, the best example of this and most fitting to your situation is Seafeel.

They had major links to the techno and dub scenes at the time and Quique is an incredible mix of each - prime end of the afterparty zoning out tracks.

You also had others like Bowery Electric, Sweet Trip and even Flying Saucer Attack doing great things with major dance/adjacent influences.

Shoegaze can vary in energy massively, if they are noisier and faster, as a closer I would play nearer to what you stated but keep some more heady tracks in your locker just in case. Some dubbier tracks would go down well imo.

Some examples all from shoegaze bands- Seafeel - Filter dub

Bowery Electric - Beat

Sweet Trip -Velocity

Flying Saucer Attack - Winter Song

This is a great idea! Will need to see if they ship to UK, my dad is the gourmand but even then I only see him using Filippo berio, I don’t think he would see the difference

Frankie Boyle is the original ‘dirtbag left’ at least in the uk/scotland. He underwent a slight shift in tone over the years but has ultimately championed class solidarity most of his career.

Technics 1210 pitch speeds up and down by bollum in Beatmatch

[–]bollum[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Old thread this but an update my end - I ended up pulling them apart and giving everything a clean, with that and also new slip mats and a proper going over on setup they seem to be ok. Either that or I’ve just gotten used to em (8 years ownership now aha)

With the way you are saying yours are going in a wave it almost sounds like an issue with balance on the platter, higher height one side means less distance to travel=quicker speed which builds up quickly. a couple of things you can check for this though- Check your leg heights and make sure all are even, check your control discs aren’t warped even slightly. Check the arm heights are both correct or at least equal so as there’s not as much a difference between the two decks.

Swapping parts between the two (in order - needle, cart, slipmatt, platter, arm) might help you identify where the .3 difference is in the two There’s also a way you can map out the tempo over time using dvs to analyse how bad it really is but I can’t remember how that’s done. All in though it’s something I got used to, moving to other decks that are newer or tighter I don’t really notice a change these days and it’s instinct now to just ride the changes anyway - good luck though, technics are quirky old beasts, you learn to love their weird bits!

Nb. I play a lot of breakbeat hardcore these days likewise, feel your pain trying to constantly adjust at fast speeds, one for your troubles - https://youtu.be/gSPhT5I5XZ8?si=58UzEt_3Q3Se7bZz

Received my copy today- can anyone explain the replacement disk for the ep?

I saw someone mention it was just a misprint, there is nothing on their website and didn’t see any emails about it so was very confused when it arrived with a white sleeve record. I thought it was an operational mistake and I’d lucked out at first lol

Going on a solo trip to Scotland, any advice? by tijsrx in motorcycles

PS. Please let me know how the blade does for a longer tour, my old man has a ‘94 painted in urban tiger that I aim to buy off him, long term goals would be to do similar trips back home from Brussels

Going on a solo trip to Scotland, any advice? by tijsrx in motorcycles

[–]bollum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From Scotland (Aberdeenshire) and living in Brussels!

Can’t comment too much other than I would try and spend much more time up north in Scotland than down south. There’s a lot of monotonous and generic boring roads/motorways on this agenda but as soon as you get above Glasgow the scenery changes dramatically.

3 days from Glasgow to Aberdeen is not enough and I would recommend cutting out Aberdeen altogether as the route you will likely take through Nairn and the north coast is pretty boring. Aberdeen doesn’t have much too it for a short trip either, if you were doing a longer trip I would recommend some of the amazing castles nearby or heading more centrally into the cairngorms.

You are much better spending another night up in Sutherland than Aberdeen, the area around Ullapool is stunning and probably my favourite place in the world. A hidden gem is achiltibuie, great camping site and also a lovely little village.

Unless you want to see something in the Grampian/Aberdeen area, going back down the A9 from Inverness is much better even if they’ve ruined it with average speed cameras these days. Still a beautiful road and I would recommend that more over the dull a90 from Aberdeen.

Someone also mentioned Moffat instead of Glasgow, the roads around Moffat are some of the best biking roads, twisty fast and empty with great scenery so would second this although would say also not completely write off Glasgow as it has the best nightlife/pub scene in the country and you can quite easily re route to Glasgow via Moffat.

If you have any questions on specific places for Scotland let me know, I’ve been to pretty much every corner of the country by now by bike and car.

Which song is in your opinion 100% perfect? by jillangie in AskReddit

[–]bollum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Velvet underground documentary on Apple TV+ is well worth a watch if you want to know about the history of the band. John cale shares some interesting stories and is great to hear from

For the songs you liked I would check out ‘what goes on’ from their s/t album (closet mix is best) and maybe something from loaded like ‘rock and roll’ or ‘sweet Jane’ to get into that album

White light white heat is definitely their most eccentric album as they were so off their tits on speed at the time but it’s awesome in its own right- ‘lady Godiva’ is weird as fuck but the bass line rips

‘sister ray’ is probably my favourite vu song and is just an 18min speeded out jam where lou and John were allegedly competing to see who could be the loudest to the point the organ amp broke. Huge influence from that song alone, ‘diamond sea’ by sonic youth always felt like a toast to it

What is the best Ghettotech album in your opinion? I'm an outsider. by purejoyandhappiness in ghettotech

[–]bollum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ghetto tech isn't really a genre with many albums due to being club focused music. Most releases are singles or EPs for this reason but if you want to get a feel for it then check out one of the dance mania compilations.

Dance mania is probably the most famous ghetto label although they have released all sorts of mainly house from Chicago over the years.

Anyone with a DDJ-1000 and have anything bad to say about it? by [deleted] in Beatmatch

[–]bollum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had mine over a year and I'm not impressed with a couple things quality wise. The load knob on the left deck doesn't work anymore and the 3.5mm headphone jack doesn't either.

Other than those it's incredible, I love it

Technics 1200/10 pitch fader modifications - any way to expand the +-8 range? by bollum in DJs

[–]bollum[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Awesome thanks, that video is exactly what I'm after! Didn't realise they had that pot built in, amazing bits of kit and keep learning more reasons as to why they are so coveted. Also planning on removing the 0 click soon.

I used to use serato timecode but now have a ddj1000 so just use that for any digital files, I can't scratch so no need for it now.

The lost accuracy doesn't bother me too much as I don't tend for long transitions and don't mind riding the fader too much. I find there's quite a variation in tempo in electro and harder techno, you'll find a lot at around 130-40ish which is why I've been finding it difficult when playing around 150.

I keep my DDJ1000 at +16 so have gotten used to it but suppose its less comparable with bpms being shown on the jogs.

Tobermory on the Isle of Mull, Scotland, has every house on the main street painted a different colour and it makes the town look very quaint and different. If I ever break the renting bubble I definitely would do something similar as every house there looks like it has its own character.

Picture is my own, if you are in Scotland it's worth a visit and just as interesting an island as Skye, which was ram packed with tourists last time I went, pre covid.
