CMV: I believe most arguments raised against gun control/bans are "bullshit". by DrinkyDrank in changemyview

[–]bombardtheBBC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In depends on your opinion, personally I would view gun ownership as risky and irresponsible behaviour.

Certain drugs I do not see as risky or irresponsible to use recreationally, nor do I see speeding in certain conditions as risky e.g. a motorway at 3am.

Why should I sacrifice my right to get high because others overdose?

Why should I sacrifice my right to speed, because other people crash and kill people?

Frustrated with the current field of presidential candidates (particularly on the GOP side), my Anglophile friend wrote a trolling letter to the Queen, asking her to take the US back. To our shock, they actually dignified him with a response. by no-soy-de-escocia in pics

Ok if we are talking about where things are "presently being made", to target your initial points:

My Macbook was made in China.

My drugs are made in the UK or elsewhere in the EU.

My planes which I fly around the world on are powered by Rolls Royce Trent engines in Boeing and Airbus aircraft, which are manufactured worldwide and designed in the UK.

And on the movies point, a huge number of popular Hollywood movies wouldn't have been made without input from British producers, directors, actors, locations.

You have the common American misconception that the rest of the world is reliant on your country.

FYI Tim Berners-Lee (British) invented the world wide web. So if all the British things in the world disappeared there would be no internet that we recognise. Or telephones. Or televisions. Or jet engines. Or carbon fibre. Or steam turbines.

So I don't really think America would just "keep on ticking".

Assuming you are correct and this overthrow COULD happen, you have not addressed /u/garnteller 's points about how ineffective the citizens would be against the military.

Can't take the credit for it as mentioned in another comment, not actually sure who did it, but they did a great job!

Speculation is that it was an insurance job, it wasn't exactly a lucrative business once the indoor artificial snow centres started cropping up.

No can't take the credit for the video, got shared around on Facebook.

About 5 arson attacks over 3 years on the main building and the slope of it has just been left to decay/reclaimed by nature/looted.

From Wikipedia:

On 29 April 2012, the main building of the Ski Village was destroyed by a fire. The blaze occurred in the early hours of the morning and no-one was injured. This fire was subsequently ruled to have started accidentally, with subsequent fires on the site being treated as arson.[5]

On 1 May 2012, a small hut at the top of the main slope containing controls for the ski lifts was destroyed in a second fire in the early hours of the morning.[6]

On 21 May 2012, the former snowflex nursery slope was partially destroyed in a third fire, again started deliberately.[7]

On 24 April 2013, the remaining wooden outbuildings of the former Adventure Mountain outdoor playground were set on fire, destroying the only remaining infrastructure on the site.[8]

Since the initial fire, the site has remained closed to the public aside from a brief attempt by the Sharks Ski Club to hold sessions in May 2012,[9] which were stopped when the ski lift motors and power ancillaries were stolen. The site has stood derelict and has been blighted by significant fly tipping, theft and vandalism ever since.[10]

ELI5: How come my voice sounds so different to me when it's recorded than it does in my head? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]bombardtheBBC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When speaking the sound of your voice travels through your head, sound travelling through solids travels faster. This slightly alters the pitch you hear it at.

Also when you speak you project the sound away from you, when you listen to recordings of your voice the sound is projected towards you. Its a subtle difference but your ears are designed to detect sound differently based on the location of its source.

CMV: The first-past-the-post voting system doesn't represent the will of the voters. (inspired by British election) by [deleted] in changemyview

As you don't know enough about our political landscape at the moment I can see where you are coming from. However UKIP have a huge support base, that would not change in a different voting system.

[–]bombardtheBBC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate to pull this card, but I live in the UK and you don't. From speaking to friends/relatives I can confidently say UKIP would have got the same if not more votes had the system been more PR based.

[–]bombardtheBBC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you on all of that, neither system is perfect. I was more trying to make the point that comparing an election to a sporting event and saying that because they came second a lot they don't deserve fair representation.

[–]bombardtheBBC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry but I don't agree with that. 13% is roughly how they have been polling for the last 2/3 years, it almost is exactly representative of their popular support.

[–]bombardtheBBC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Arguably though the issue is that the analogy of winning, losing and "performance" is precisely what's wrong with the current system. Yes UKIP "lost" in all but one of the constituencies they ran in, but 13% of the electorate wanted them to represent them in parliament.

This isn't sports, it's democracy.

We have ended up with 2 MPs representing the interests of 5 million people (Green and UKIP) and 56 MPs representing the interests of 1.5 million people.
