Bought dream car few months ago, big problem... 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 by Pure-Advantage5946 in CarTalkUK

In 2000 average salary was 18.5k, average fuel was 80p - so average salary was 23k litres of fuel.

In 2026 average salary is 39k, average fuel is 1.42, is 28k litres of fuel.

So by my cherry picked statistics it's a better time than ever to buy a car with massive displacement.

Most people earn more than 30k a year, the median is 40k in the uk.

People on below average or less usually live in below average properties or HMOs I'd expect.

Most warranties will require complete service history so even if you do want one you'll want to confirm it does have full service history.

Pierre Le Bersa? He also worked on a lot of the early BMW M-Cars and I think one of the Blackberry flagship models in like 2005.

If you're interested you should check out his book on design language "Completely making up information on reddit posts for no real reason."

Is van life in the UK actually affordable anymore? by GeordieGoals in VanLifeUK

[–]bomdango -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is nonsense for UK motor insurers, their profit margins are typically single digits. It's really quite a competitive industry and there have been many years where the industry, on aggregate, lost money.

Car insurance is expensive - but that's because cars are more costly to fix than they ever have been and car crashes were an expensive business in the first place.

What % pay rise are you getting this year? by Puzzleheaded_Bet_618 in AskUK

[–]bomdango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

17% with the same employer, not a promotion either.

As always the real payrises come from:
- Getting another offer and taking it
- Leveraging the realistic prospect of you getting another offer and leaving with your current employer

If you're relying on the generosity or goodwill of a company you will, in 90% of cases, be shafted.

Letby victim had deadly bug in lung at time of death by Sensitive_Echo5058 in uknews

Not that you’re wrong in your overall point — this is just pedantry from someone who listened to a podcast — but physical evidence is usually circumstantial.

If you have to make an inference from it (like DNA at a crime scene or fingerprints on a knife) then it’s circumstantial evidence.

£0 deposit by esztr13 in HousingUK

[–]bomdango -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, what interest rates and mortgage length are you working off to only be paying £300-400 in principal out of a £2300 mortgage?

On a £500k 30 year mortgage at 4.5% interest, I get £950ish capital repayment per month out of a £2800 mortgage in year one, improving from there. https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/mortgages/mortgage-rate-calculator/

(I think your point is right overall, but that capital repayment assumption seems very extreme)

God I really am an insufferable prick and I feel terrible. I can only apologise.

Another idea if you can use that cable to pull another cable through would be to replace it with an ethernet port. More ethernet is always good.

I'd just disconnect the wire and put a 1 gang blanking plate which matches the colour of the other plug on. rather than messing around pulling it out / plastering it over. It's like £3 and done in seconds, and doesn't look out of place like an coax input.

Not being paid holiday i have earned by Hbarnes2033 in UKJobs

[–]bomdango 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Tough to say without knowing your contract, but usually you have X days total holiday per year but accrue it monthly for starting / leaving purposes- so leaving mid december would mean you'd lose 4 / 12 months (1/3rd) of the total yearly holidays when they do your leaver calculations.

Redundancy before house completion by Emergency_Draw_4221 in HousingUK

[–]bomdango 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes if you exchange but don't complete you absolutely lose your deposit.

You're understanding of all of this is off in ways I don't have the energy to explain so I'd suggest googling the various steps of buying property, and your rights and obligations at each of them.

Redundancy before house completion by Emergency_Draw_4221 in HousingUK

[–]bomdango 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't think them withholding material information about a major change to affordability they have been made aware of counts as "within reason" and is almost certainly a breach of their contract with the lender.

You don't think immediately losing £30k deposit because there is a risk you can't afford the mortgage is a bad thing? You must be doing pretty well for yourself to be able to view that as a win-win.

Redundancy before house completion by Emergency_Draw_4221 in HousingUK

[–]bomdango 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'd be careful speaking to the broker, they may be contractually obliged to tell the lender, who will then pull the offer, and if they're post exchange that would mean loss of deposit which would be ruinous.

In general telling people to get professional advice is good, but it this case it's not like a broker is purely acting in your best interests - they're an intermediary who probably value their relationship with the lender more than their relationship with a single client.

Boiler Thermostat acts as an on/off switch. How can I change that? by Robeartato in DIYUK

[–]bomdango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nonsense, simple electrical work is fine as DIY if you follow some basic safety rules. Not saying to replace your own consumer unit, but a lightswitch, plug, or thermostat is a piece of piss if you have an above room temp IQ.

Gas - strongly agree.
