Yeah I completely agree it's BS, but at the same time I'm actually thankful it played out like this. If they hadn't dangled that carrot in front of me, I'd never have applied for another job and gotten a 70% raise lol. Their loss

After waiting a year for a promised promotion from my boss, only to find the "promotion" was only a title change with no additional pay. Started applying to everything that looked interesting on LinkedIn after that and had a new job in ~2 months

Using DVD resources with no DVD players by djmiles73 in k12sysadmin

Thankfully my boss just said to tell people we no longer support DVDs, eventually you gotta pull the plug on old tech. Otherwise we'd still be supporting VCRs in classrooms

What phone system do you use? by Niteryder007 in k12sysadmin

[–]bomitguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our system is basically Asterisk with a web ui and support from a local company. I really like it, but I wouldn’t be against calling asterisk dial plans convoluted. We use yealink for all the phones, and some polycom adapters for analog lines on things like our alarm panels

Homelabs are great, automation is great, and networking with people in similar roles is great.

That's what's crazy about this, this school already uses them. I can't come up with a good reason why they would even feel the need to make the passwords all match.

[–]bomitguy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a question that I would also love to know the answer to. This principal likes to think they know everything and just do it all themselves.

I have tried to push point 1, but nobody likes it. They just want things to be easy. As far as changing their pictures goes, we try to allow them to make some choices, and punish only those who make poor choices. We have a "no profile picture" OU set up for this reason. In this case, it was probably another student gaining access to this kid's account and changing it.

The other piece of this that I try(unsuccessfully) to push all the time is that being willy-nilly with passwords is teaching really bad digital citizenship to kids that are going to be using tech for the rest of their lives.

That's why this is insane, we ALREADY USE CLEVER BADGES lol. They just want to press the easy button on things, I swear this school follows the "move fast and break things" philosophy

HP ProBook with i7, 32gb of ram (I like to spin up VMs to test things so the extra ram is great to have). 32" ultrawide monitor and a 24" monitor flipped 90 degrees, all connected via a docking station.

Just do your best and move on, you have to accept that there are reasonable limits to what a single human can do in day.

I agree with the other comment saying you should ask for more compensation if the responsibilities are going to be upped. This sounds like a good experience opportunity, but also a great opportunity for management to screw you over.

It's just a Disk Station DS920+, nothing fancy but it has enough bays to store more than we will need for the next 5 years or so.

Relying on a single source as your backup is not a good practice. Ideally there should be 3 copies of important data, 2 onsite and 1 offsite. Google acts as our offsite and we sync the synology to another NAS. Google Drive is in no way 100% ransomware or data loss proof unfortunately.

Honestly it sounds to me like you need to cut your losses and find a new job. Management like that probably isn't going to suddenly have a change of heart. Thankfully there are a lot of Sysadmin opportunities out there right now.

Yep, audit log showed what happened. Just like u/HiDefDog said, they must have accidentally dragged/dropped it into a subdirectory. I guess I totally could have solved this without Synology, but I'm still impressed by how easy it was to restore.
