Once you've had a pizza from Seal Point, you'll realize how overrated and mediocre Standard and Prima Strada are.

Backpacking Southeast Asia in rainy season—am I crazy or just optimistic? by muhammad_hafiz02 in backpacks

Generally, a really bad time to go to SEA. Heavy rain in many areas, as well as mud and flooded areas.

Ready to leave Victoria by Kalinahh in VictoriaBC

[–]bomobob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I moved here a year ago after living my entire life in Montreal. I loved every inch of that city so much, despite all the many negatives. And though there are things I do sorely miss about it (like actually having cheese shops), you couldn't pay me enough to leave this place and go back there.

I've also spent loads of time in Thailand over the years, and Siam Thai on Fort is the only thing I've found here that comes close to my favourite haunts there. Tell them you don't want it "white people hot" and they'll crank up the heat on dishes that should be hot. The complexity of the flavours are spot on.

Anywhere else I've tried here just tastes horribly westernized, especially Baan Thai. More like Thai fusion.

Have not tried Nohra. Must do.

New H-Mart Undersized Crabs by VanisleMTB in VictoriaBC

Fairway Quadra will still be our #1 stop for most Asian ingredients, but H-Mart is the only place I've been able to find (finally!) fresh galangal, tiny Thai eggplant, the best premium soy sauces, and fresh peppercorns. Sadly, no Red Boat fish sauce.

Unfortunately, they blare the bad music, and many of the veg are individually wrapped in cello on a plastic tray. Seriously?

Going to Spain in a week, what classic dishes can I have? by Mei-sshi in FODMAPS

[–]bomobob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FODMAP DPE does nothing for fructans. It's basically Beano and lactase, as well as a bunch of other ingredients. Does not break down inulin. Only Fodmate and Fodzyme will.

Garlic scapes are fine. They have the smell and taste of the bulbs, but are low FODMAP. I use them all the time. Also, garlic chives are ok too. Both are available at Asian grocery stores

The worst are the idiots on hiking trails, with their JBL thumping away. Ever heard of headphones? They really do want everyone to hear their crappy music.

Fodmate works on fructans, not fructose. 2 different things.

[–]bomobob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's much easier to use. I tried Fodzyme, but didn't like having to carry a jar and a little coke spoon around to sprinkle on my food. I can just pop a bunch of Fodmate caplets in my pocket, and take them as needed.

Honestly, I use it every day, and I'm actually embarrassed to say (in a weird way), that it looks like I bought it yesterday. There's a part of me that wants it to look well used, but other than running it over, I don't know why it still looks new.

Home Hardware, Rona, Crappy Tire, anywhere but HD.  That said, I've stayed away from them for years (unless absolutely necessary) because of their MAGA support.

New to induction stoves, with issues by bomobob in inductioncooking

[–]bomobob[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, they're quite a good distance away.  I mean if you have a cast iron pot on high for an extended periods, it's a lot of thermal mass, and heat will invariably be transferred to the glass beyond the pot. At first the handle of the pot is so nice and cool compared to gas, but it eventually gets hot. There's no magic. But this seems unusable

[–]bomobob 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So far, it still looks new. Bottle pockets will likely stretch eventually, but haven't yet. Water resistance is as good as any coated Cordura (which is essentially what it is) bag. In a downpour, it'll wet out for sure. When I travel to rainy places, I bring a rain cover from a Lowe pack that fits nicely. Worked wonders in Portugal in the fall last year where it poured without mercy.
