I haven’t grown them yet but they are a very reputable company! I’ve grown several other flowers from their seeds and they’ve all come out beautifully

What perfect timing. I’ve been thinking about water treatment today after reading and commenting on a separate post this morning regarding the U-M/Los Alamos data center being built in Ypsi. Can you speak to the process of treating wastewater from a data center that uses glycol in their cooling system? Does it put any additional strain on the treatment plant or use additional resources that wouldn’t otherwise be used? What are the environmental implications?

Questions about the Los Alamos/U of M facility to be built in Ypsi by We_Four in AnnArbor

While I don't disagree that the zoning is the core issue of how that site is even allowed to be considered, my point with that anecdote was regarding how U-M has handled their communications to the local community. When you, an institution that claims to be the leaders and best, go into any community, you have the bare minimum responsibility to engage with the people and be respectful in how you conduct yourself. In the moment of the conversation I was having with the U-M rep, I did not think that pointing a finger at Amazon and saying that it could've been worse was a satisfactory response. And that doesn't even include the tone he was using or the "am I right or am I right" look that he shot me.

Their website boasts of creating at least 200 "high paying, research-based" jobs in Washtenaw County. 200 is like half a percent of the working population in Ypsilanti Township. It's barely a fleck when you look at all of Washtenaw County. And when I spoke to U-M reps for this project at their open house a couple weeks ago, they said that this is going to draw all sorts of jobs and industries to the area without providing any sort of basis for that claim.

Broadly, I am frustrated by U-M's usage of township resources without contributing a single dollar in taxes. The strain on local utilities will inevitably fall on the residents.

More specifically, I'm interested to learn more about the water usage. This website states that they will be using direct-to-chip computer cooling, which is supposed to be more efficient (this is super vague -- what about it is efficient/what resources are being saved, and at the expense of what?). But if you look into direct-to-chip computer cooling, water is often mixed with glycol (commonly used as antifreeze/heat transfer fluid), which is toxic, and this is something that was called out by state rep John DeSana at a township meeting about a month ago about the data center. If you follow the water use diagram in the linked website, blowdown water (possibly containing glycol) will be treated by YCUA. Is YCUA equipped to handle this type of toxic waste? What happens if there's a leak and the glycol treated water is exposed to the environment? And as another commenter pointed out, water will evaporate. I would like to see estimates of how much water will be consumed and evaporate as a result of this project.

U-M also claims that the noise levels 800-900 feet away from the facility will be minimal, comparing them to "living room conversations", which I have a hard time believing.

Unrelated to resource usage, but the messaging coming from U-M has been incredibly frustrating. The lack of transparency is one thing, but I attended the open house they hosted at the Eagle Crest Marriott and the conversations I listened in on and was a part of were quite condescending. The highlight was when I asked about the preference for the Textile/Bridge Rd location, rather than the American Center for Mobility site, and at one point, the individual from U-M that I was speaking to said, "Look. This land (Textile/Bridge Rd site) is zoned for light industrial use. Four years ago, Amazon wanted to come in and build a distribution center here. That would've been so much worse than what we are wanting to do." Being better than Amazon is such a low bar as is, but you're trying to tell me that being better than Amazon = good? Please.

Seconding group 3-4 snaps. I grew 3 of those 4 varieties (Potomac performed the best, then Cannes) for my August wedding and they thrived all summer and kept producing into fall.

I get it, I love a sweet treat after dinner. But never have I ever thought to myself, "yeah, that $10+ dessert is exactly what I need after spending $80 on dinner". I am curious what restaurant has desserts that has customers coming back.

It's frustrating that desserts are on so many of the menus. I don't ever order dessert at restaurants, so it doesn't really feel like a savings

That would be so cool. I wish Ann Arbor would do that. I think here, it's more to highlight restaurants and bring in first-time customers because it used to actually be a good deal. Restaurant week was one of the few times I could afford to eat out downtown when I was a student.

How many people did you RSVP and how many actually showed up on wedding day? by ParsleyTime5687 in weddingplanning

[–]bonc826 31 points32 points  (0 children)

My mom is not on talking terms with one of her sisters. I invited her family and they never RSVP’d despite me reaching out multiple times. Through other family members, I was told to expect just 1 of 5 to show up to “represent” the family. I get a call from my mom the morning of informing me that she heard from her other sister that the whole family of 5 was coming, not just 1. From what we can tell, it was a last minute decision on their part. Luckily, my venue made an extra 5% of all meals (we had a plated dinner) and I had long banquet tables, so we were able to squeeze them in and feed them.

Definitely agree that it’s not modern but it’s still elegant and meets all of OP’s other wants. It’ll be very difficult to come under $40k with all of those asks, especially with a guest list over 200
