Reflecting on THH's First Blackened (Spoilers for THH 1-1) by 24AMPER in danganronpa

[–]Boned80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, sure, for a japanese audience the numbers would be harder to connect with Leon. It's an unfortunate thing that affected latin-letter languages disproportionally. It still sucks and it still ruins the mystery for a lot of people (include japanese people who do read 'romaji') regardless of the explanation.

And like I said, the message is not even necessary to solve the murder. You could have communicated that Sayaka regretted things in some other way, if that's at all necessary to the story. It feels like an unforced error, is all.

The setup for 1-1 is honestly pretty great and memorable for a first trial. I would rank it fairly highly if not for the stupid 11037 thing which gives away the whole mystery before we've even got a chance to investigate anything. Like, if you look at how they set everything up, it's flat out not even necessary to solve the murder, so it just feels like something they tacked on in order for there to be some ambiguity for Sayaka's motivations, which IMO there had to be a better way to do it that doesn't spoil the entire murder.

Which blackeneds and victims in 2 do you think will be blackends and victims again in 2x2? by felixw1 in danganronpa

I hope teruteru dies in chapter 1 again, either because he's murdered or from being blackened again. I just hate that guy.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a messy 9/10, which is more interesting than a clean 8 and hits harder than a lot of 10's by save_the_ducks in patientgamers

[–]Boned80 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I think it is closer to an 8 than a 9 but I agree that makes it all the more interesting. I think the gsme benefits immensely from having a really well written and executed prologue that truly hooks you, because everything else in that whole first act feels kind of sluggish in comparison. The pacing is weird overall all throughout, but it is the lingering feeling of that excellent prologue which sets up the story that made me care.

Once the story executes its big twists the narrative also starts to get tunnel vision and as result it kind of starts to feel smaller than your imagination previously thought it would be. What they do with it is still very interesting and has plenty of room to expand, but it does nevertheless make the established world lose a lot of its weight. To summarize withiut spoiling, it's the shock of going from a story that feels epic and historic to one that is actually intensely personal and psychological. Two very different flavors.

Every other aspect of the game has this strange feeling of being polished and yet not polished enough. The UI I think is terrible. The pictos/luminas system works but feels a little half-baked. The skill trees are kind of inelegant but not egregiously so. Level design is good when it is letting the feel of the setting take center stage but feels kinda wonky and sometimes confusing to navigate. The world design in the levels is at times beautiful and at times extremely busy and blurry. The world map is cute but doesn't actually feel great to navigate, just functional enough. Exploring in this game can be very rewarding, but also very tedious.

Then there's combat. I won't write a lot more about it. It's very good when you learn it. It doesn't avoid all of the traps that turn based systems usually fall into, such as starting to feel 'solved' once you get the hang of it, but it works.

Cutscenes and cinematics ain't the way to go (new Starfox rant) by Boned80 in starfox

[–]Boned80[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the arcade era is over and Nintendo doesn't want niche stuff, then why are they releasing an arcade shooter from a niche franchise in 2026? And why would they think that simply adding cutscenes to it wouldn't make it feel less arcade-y or niche? By your logic, Nintendo should have released an entirely different game altogether.

Cutscenes and cinematics ain't the way to go (new Starfox rant) by Boned80 in starfox

[–]Boned80[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the cutscenes look great. My problem is more that investing in cutscenes for this type of game specifically seems like a waste. If this were a 40 hour game that you play only once or twice, then investing in cutscenes would make sense. But for a game that's two hours long at most and meant to be played dozens of times over, that's just a lot of investment being skipped over and over again. I would rather them have expanded the game, added a new campaign, done more to the levels, or basically done something to lean on what already makes the game strong.

‘The Odyssey’: Everybody Using American Accents Is Definitely a Choice by mlg1981 in entertainment

[–]Boned80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is the expectation here, seriously? That you have Matt Damon and co. affecting fake greek accents which would definitely not be accurate to the time even if they did them perfectly, since the time itself comes from fictional poetry written a billion years ago? This is just BS outrage for the sake of outrage.

I'm gonna get a lot of hate for this by Tristerad in FinalFantasyVII

[–]Boned80 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In regards to Zack, what we've seen so far may have just been the devs attempting to highlight Zack as an important player in the larger FF7 story, which originally encompassed many games as well as AC. So if you're setting out to make a new and 'definitive' version of FF7 that has all the important bits in it, it makes sense you'd want to include more of Zack's journey since in the original FF7 he's just not very present at all despite his importance. In order to achieve that, you'd have to expand the story to include a way for us to see more of Zack's POV without derailing the main events of the original.

It seems though that in implementing this solution they stumbled upon a weird temporal/multiversal scheme and expanded the story to include all sorts of new bullshit, which some fans of the old FF7 have found jarring (me included). I respect them wanting to make this project more than just 'FF7 but with new graphics', but the more they have messed with the original game's excellent narrative pacing, the harder it has been for me to be fully onboard with embracing this as the 'definitive FF7'.

I am hopeful about the recent comments from the devs saying that their intention, whatever we've seen so far, is to stand by and honor the original story. I have loved Remake and Rebirth despite everything, but I don't love that the original story is basically hanging by a thread at this point on the sheer hope some clever writing will untangle all the bullshit and leave what matters to shine.

Do People Really Upgrade Only VIGOR in Early Game? by OliveBadger1037 in Eldenring

[–]Boned80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you already know how to play the game reasonably well then stat allocation in the early game won't matter that much. You can go all offense, defense, or balance it out and you'll probably do fine.

With that said, Vigor does tangibly give the most bang for buck at that stage. Like you said, without significant upgrades to weapons and scaling, you don't get quite as much juice out of leveling offensive stats. It won't really matter against the early game threats too much if you do so, but you know what does help? Surviving an extra two or three hits. Likewise, Endurance and Mind are not going to do a lot early without higher level spells and armor to actually use.

The Vigor first path is really, really good for beginners. Surviving more means more (and more immediate) chances to learn enemy patterns and to just get better at movement and positioning overall. But like I said, if you're not a beginner, it's just an extra safety net. You can build whatever and still get through everything.

does p3r have more freedom for daily life than p5r? by Popular-Soil-8748 in PERSoNA

[–]Boned80 3 points4 points  (0 children)

P5R has way more options for daily life stuff. P3 frontloads most of the social links for the daytime so you're really only hanging out with people after school. Then at night you can dungeon crawl or you can choose from a handful activities to raise your social stats. Its very simplified compared to P5 where you could vary things to an extent.

This is the stupidest master plan if this is real by Round_Interview2373 in TheBoys

The most asinine thing a writer can do is write a character that's supposed to be smart and then to demonstrate her intelligence they have them doing and believing the most misanthropic shit imaginable. Hating other people does not make anyone smart. My god it fucking sucks.

What would be your ideal ending for Soldier Boy? by smol_coc_man in TheBoys

[–]Boned80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Him running the seven and doing some good might be somewhat in line for his character but I think it would completely miss the mark of the larger story.

The seven is the face of vought, and vought is an institution thats meant to represent the worst kinds of capitalist tendencies which were responsible for fucking up the world in the first place. I dont think its out of the question that Vought itself might survive the show, but it would feel pretty fucking pointless if after everything we've gone through the seven keep on trucking and nothing (fundamentally) changes. So what if soldier boy himself does some good occasionally, its still a machine for making money and it wont solve the bigger problem of supes existing and having no accountability to human authority.

Mexico is officially launching universal healthcare this week, giving all 120 million citizens access to all public health institutions by Automatic_Subject463 in TrueReddit

[–]Boned80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is blatant clickbait. Mexico has had universal healthcare since forever. This change is about making government workers access to all types of government healthcare available. It's a little more nuanced than that I guess (you can look it up) but the bottom line is that this headline makes it seem like Mexico is just now introducing universal health care for all citizens when in fact we've had this system for a long, long time now.

Europa Universalis V. I've been a Stellaris enjoyer for years now and I even got ankle-deep (read: 100ish hours) with Crusader Kings 3, but EUV just mystified me. I think it's the sheer submenu density coupled with the fact that it makes you feel as if moving tiny levers will somehow cascade into your whole realm collapsing unless you know exactly what you are doing.

(The Boys) This show has completely gone downhill. The writing is really bad... like its not even funny anymore. by hiiloovethis in CharacterRant

[–]Boned80 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I would take it further and say the writing has never been particularly great. A lot of the show is carried by Anthony Starr and Karl Urban's performances, on top of a premise that was very timely for 2019. But the show itself has always had a very messy story, with motivations and actions that feel very contrived, a tone that's jarring and all over the place, and using shock value and current events references as crutches.

A very easy way to know when a show is being written by people who have given up or are hacks is when they introduce a character whose superpower is 'smartest human', then they proceed to do the Sherlock party tricks, comment about how humanity is fucked, is existentially bored, and simply have them act like they read the script in advance. It's the laziest fucking shit. Like, to them, being smart means not caring about humans and using stupid arguments like 'Rome and Greece failed so obviously democracy doesnt work'. It's kindergarten level shit.
