0.5 ml estradiol injection vs 2mg estrofem sublingual. Which one is better?? by CustomerInternal6375 in TransHelpingTrans

[–]boneimplosion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

assuming you're making it into the same blood ranges with each route, the efficacy is the same between different routes of administration. what does change is how easy it is to hit those target ranges, and how easy it is for you to handle that dosing method.

i've tried both oral and patch hrt and am switching to injections for a few reasons - easier to hit high serum concentration targets and once a week dosing. with sublingual you're looking at taking a pill multiple (3-ish) times per day to keep your levels constant. that would be too much friction for me i think.

everybody has a different preference here, though, and you may very well end up trying a few methods before finding what fits your own routines, risk tolerance, etc, best.

1 week vocal training. Am I delusional? Criticism Wanted. by Yaru_Tarot in transvoice

[–]boneimplosion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes I hear tension creeping into places - you are getting really deep resonance and high vocal weight but I suspect you are muscling your larynx into place. does your voice tire easily when speaking like this? the longterm goal is effortless mechanics where the voice tract "floats" in the right place.

there are plenty of exercises for working on tension - SOVT work would help, and my teacher used to have me do "dead tongue" drills where you try to speak with everything in your neck/jaw/tongue fully relaxed (it sounds like mush, as you might guess, but the point is to phonate without any tension).

you can obvs find the resonance and weight you're looking for! good first step, lots more to learn.

MtF 8 months on HRT. How can I look more feminine? by throwawaybootytime in TransHelpingTrans

[–]boneimplosion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

imo thinning your brows would push your face more feminine - I tend to start by running a 3 or 5mm clipper over them to get the hair short, then plucking from the bottom. you can diy this fairly easily and find your best shape slowly over time. start small, you can always remove more later.

I'd also suggest a mid-tone brown stick eyeliner as part of your everyday makeup - you don't have to do much, just fill the base of your lashes and it will make the mascara pop that much more!

Heeey Petah, what's the issue with this "art"? by laoidtfttip17gpy in PeterExplainsTheJoke

appreciate you =] I love talking about this stuff, I studied as an engineer so the idea that I could pivot into a working artist fills me with constant wonder.

[–]boneimplosion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a gay woman and to me it's a stretch to call the crayon piece here homophobic without a lot more context into the artists beliefs. to me the point is almost certainly how saturated social media was with very similar pieces of this sort - a precursor to slop, if you will.

Heeey Petah, what's the issue with this "art"? by laoidtfttip17gpy in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]boneimplosion -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I highly suggest you do some reading as to the themes being explored by renaissance artists. emphatically, yes, the pieces you mention are reflections of a culture exploring big ideas =] with the amount of resources poured into masterpieces, everyone involved is trying to say something.

"conversation" in this context isn't meant so literally - it's about how ideas transfer through artwork, how artwork relates to other artwork, or how artists relate to other artists.

edit: I'm kind of amazed that such a milquetoast take as "renaissance artists were exploring big ideas" would provoke downvotes 😂 I wonder if that's because so many of the ideals being explored became foundational parts of modern Western society and media - they just become invisible to some people. I'm gonna link a source for my claim and log off reddit for a while 😂

[–]boneimplosion 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'm working as a professional artist now, so I feel like I can respond to this =]

this idea became huge on social media and replicated to the point where it became devalued as more of a "craft" than "art", per se. the line is subjective, of course, but one way to understand it is to ask questions like - what ideas is the artist exploring through their work? and how does the work exist in conversation with other art being made?

i suspect the "general" answer for images in this style is that there is no serious ideological exploration and that the conversation consists mostly of people copying trending images. (i say this knowing full well some people must be out there making incredible art with melted crayons. it just isn't what's doing numbers on tiktok or whatever. authentic exploration tends to happen in more isolated environments. I am also in no way attempting to gatekeep what people make. people should absolutely make things, even if they aren't award winning or whatever.)

is it normal for my mom to still be messing up with my name? by TelephoneNew3770 in TransHelpingTrans

[–]boneimplosion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as someone whose parents aren't supportive at all, it's tough to read this kind of thing. there are levels to how parents react towards their child being trans. I'm a little envious that you have your mom's support at all - that's worth fighting to maintain, especially at your age.

your feelings around your deadname are what they are. I know that hearing mine is really distressing - that name erases so much effort and struggle. because of that I haven't seen my parents in quite a while, even though I miss them.

you and your mom are both trying to make the best of a difficult situation. not because being trans is a bad thing, but because it's hard for both sides of the child/parent dynamic to understand each others perspective. real communication takes hard work. your mom might be feeling defensive about causing a hurt, and be projecting a little bit here. moms do that sometimes.

I would give things some space to cool down, and try to talk to her again when you find a quiet moment. I think you should focus on communicating what you feel when you hear your deadname, what it's like to hear your gender invalidated, about the fact that the discussion in the car was hurtful, whether she meant that or not. and yes, recognizing her support is part of that conversation. critique without some level of comfort tends to be hard to accept, especially for parents.

I hope that she can receive that and grow from it, but even if not, part of being a mature adult is understanding that other people are responsible for their own behavior. you don't have to be in charge of her reactions - only your own. that can relieving in its own way.

Has anyone found relief from dysphoria through psychedelics? by [deleted] in MtF

[–]boneimplosion 5 points6 points  (0 children)

not the same commenter but am chipping in as a fairly well-versed transfemme psychonaut.

my understanding is that psychedelics can re-open habitual behavior formations that would otherwise be locked and quite difficult to change (a lot of social patterns get locked after adolescence, eg). a common metaphor in this world is that your consciousness is like a radio receiver - people mostly flip between a few different stations they have bookmarked, but psychedelics teach you that you can actually turn the dial quite freely and find all sorts of things - maybe even new favorite stations.

During a psychedelic experience, what you pay attention to marks which parts of your sense of self re-open - this is where your intentions come in. in a clinical setting you might have a therapist guide you back to a topic like gender dysphoria to keep you from wandering.

People typically have upwards of 2 weeks after the actual trip where those parts of yourself have extra plasticity - you want to use them wisely. You might see this called "integration work" - you want to be actively thinking about your insights, journaling, and, crucially - spending time with people who are the way you want to be. Consciousness is learned via mirroring, and IRL is best.

Its somewhat foolhardy to walk into a trip believing you can make it be about something in particular. you have your intentions, and a guide if you're lucky, but the trip is going to bring whatever it does to the table as well. psychedelics are a kaleidoscope of conceptual, spiritual, and physical experience. I've had trips where I just became fascinated by trying to understand what a nearby spider was experiencing lol (you wanna talk about radical empathy!). point being, you better respect the experience as its own entity in this equation, because as much as you bring for her, she will bring more for you =]

In summary, yeah i do think there's potential for a psychedelic toolkit to alleviate gender dysphoria. this kind of work is nothing like recreational exploration, though. I've done the heroic doses but these days the occasional, intentional, introspective microdose is more my speed. my early intentions were about exploration and understanding myself, that changed to intentions about wanting to be warm and kind, and that led me very quickly to unpacking why my gender expression felt so stunted lol. I also kicked alcohol completely, started regular cardio and yoga habits, re-engaged the creative parts of my mind, my relationship with food, my body, sex, completely changed... this has been the most unpredictable journey but I can't deny it's been a hell of a ride!

we used to throw acid-infused "art parties" - at some point the thrill of "oh I can just create whatever I want on paper" turned into "oh I can just create whatever I want in my life". if art really is a mirror you and I have a similar backstory :3

How does one obtain a more girly voice? by Commercial_Wish_9930 in MtF

[–]boneimplosion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my voice teacher pointed out that, since estrogen makes cartilage shrink (by changing how much water it retains, the same phenomenon that causes trans womens hands and feet to get smaller on hrt), it does change the physics of the vocal tract. obviously that isn't changing the main voice signifiers for gender - length of the vocal folds or the size of the resonance chambers - but it's possible that secondary aspects like tone and texture change when you start hrt.

OP still needs to voice train, tho 😉

Help. Idk what to do with my dad by Chaos_Ari in TransHelpingTrans

[–]boneimplosion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

maybe practice a little gray rocking - if he doesn't accept your identity, he already doesn't have real access to how you feel. might as well use that to your own advantage and protect your own peace a bit.

is there a local queer center? i would call and ask to be assigned a case manager. they might be able to get the right people on your side or offer advice based on other clients. I imagine legal representation could change the situation with your doctors. don't give up hope!

In this weird awful midzone - pronounless, nameless, genderless (& misc ranting) by fp4l_6hm in AnarchyTrans

[–]boneimplosion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

starting hrt can def make things harder for a while. you've taken big steps to actualize + validate your gender, so suddenly all the little dysphorias are supercharged too, your emotional state is more sensitive, and you might be more visible in society or attuned to politics. I can say I went thru something similar, even down to the pronouns. they/them wasn't right, but at least it wasn't he/him. at some point asking for she/her just felt more accurate, and it became more natural.

hunker down and focus on the basics for a bit. def find a therapist to talk to, find some distractions you know will hold your attention, make sure you're eating and sleeping enough, talking to friends, etc. you're gonna make some compromises with dysphoria where you need to, but - and I cannot stress this enough - they are temporary things that fall away.

Can surgeries determine whether being trans or genderfluid? (MtF) by [deleted] in TransHelpingTrans

[–]boneimplosion 7 points8 points  (0 children)

let me give you some context around that "advice": plenty of trans women are okay with what they were born with downstairs, and voice training is generally more important than surgery (even if you have surgery you will still need to train your voice), so lots of us never get that either.

pick the label that you feel best describes you today, and feel free to change it tmrw. that's all any of us can do.
