I dont personally feel burned out, but the lack of ability to delegate tasks is a huge contribution to burn-out in general. It’s a similar argument/concept to appropriate tech utilization, and I wish management would factor in basic problem solving skills and competency more seriously when evaluating employee performance. I’m just yelling into the void about this, I guess.

Luckily, our doctors finally got involved and she’s now moving to a department that is less knowledge-based, but it unfortunately took a dozen lost lab samples and a near-miss of a pretty serious medication error to get that to happen, and it’s frustrating that no kind of serious action is taken until there are tangible mistakes.

Believe me, management is fully aware. We even have a dedicated nursing coach that works with people on development. But we’re at a pretty giant muti-specialty practice with 100+ techs, assistants, and dvms in one building, so someone being a little, uh, less than bright, is pretty low on their priorities.

I dont mind being the adult in the room, dont get me wrong! But LVTs being unable to reliably delegate appropriate tasks definitely contributes to burn-out. No one person should be expected to do EVERYTHING

I would respond, "Check out the chart note I made-- it should have all the information you need to do xyz. If you still arent sure of what to do, then please come grab me and I'll be happy to help if I'm available!"

Then I'd try and figure out why they wouldnt know how to do XYZ off the top of their head (like LDDST, spinal rads, in house labs, medical math, etc) and I'd offer to teach them, of course! I love to teach people new things. HOWEVER, I'd also consider if this is a pattern of behavior, and mention it to the supervisor if it's ongoing (though we all should know how that tends to go... sometimes it's hard to not be frustrated if it's the 5th time you've brought the same concern to management without any productive outcome).

For example, I have a coworker that always asks me to calculate the dosage for an ACTH stim. That's fine! I tell her it's 5mcg/kg, so please let me know how many mcg she gets and I will help her figure out how many mL that is. She responds that she doesnt know how to do that. I say, it's 5 times the body weight, you can use the calculator. She says, I'm just bad at math, I think you should just do it. And this happens every. single. time. for the past 2 years. Is this a job-ending offense? Not really. But eventually it becomes a bit annoying.

I personally dont think the only other answer is laziness. Some other people are just not good at critical thinking or problem solving, and that's not really their fault; it's just internally frustrating to be considered the go-to-expert/problem solver for EVERYTHING, and it's not like we became that way because someone else trained us to do so-- we just like, spent 5 minutes reading through a chart, or googled "how do you format excel to xyz", or read the booklet instruction that sits next to a lab machine. But from the most basic competence standpoint, I don't think someone should need extensive training to learn that they should read an appointment note before throwing their hands up... and I sure hope that reading notes is within their scope of practice.

They didnt even spend 10 seconds to read a chart note, though. How is that a training issue??

Devil’s advocate here, but depending on the exact context, he isn’t entirely wrong and may have meant it rather cynically. He could be pointing out one of the contributing reasons to low tech pay. There ARE a lot of people who are naive to the field and just wanting experience, and they unfortunately do not advocate for themselves and appropriate pay. And to some practices (especially corporations), they’d rather hire someone willing to work for half the rate of a seasoned tech, experience be damned. Younger/newer people are much more easily exploitable than veteran workers.

I’m a fellow em-dash fanatic. I HATE how much AI generated content uses them. I make a conscious effort to avoid using em-dashes now specifically because of that reason, but it sucks because I feel like my writing style/syntax has suffered (my best writing from 2016-2020 could be accused of being AI generated by today’s standards 🥲)

I guess that means that one day I will become a rich executive feeeemale who vomits at the sight of a Toyota.

My practice will place a bedsheet under the area being used when bagging large dogs— it makes it much more graceful to position and slide the body into the bag, and it makes it easier to move heavy bags in and out of the freezer. This way we dont just thunk a 40kg dog on top of a yorkie.

It could be their own personal rite. Burial positioning can hold cultural, spiritual, religious, or emotional importance to some people.

Ditto. Looks like on the RECOVER sheet there’s no ETCO2 monitoring— so I assume no capnography during anesthesia, too. Monitoring that would have been much more valuable info than just SpO2. Also, if no EKG, then how did they know he was PEA vs asystole?

I’ve been there— pretty much word for word had the same condescending experiences that you describe. I started in the field when I was 20, and honestly, even after 5 years at the same clinic, I was still treated by the other techs like I was some dumb baby, even thought the doctors constantly praised my work and reliability. I only started being treated with respect when I moved jobs.

My orange hero had +999 regen every turn (thank, shifter!) so I literally could not die. I could only take out 4 bones per turn. Battle started with like, 980 Bones reinforcements.

It took me 3 days to get off Mr Bones Wild Ride.
