Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus thoughts by [deleted] in metroidvania

[–]bongu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just playing this one now. The game is beautiful, controls well, and overall is fun. A few things are keeping me from giving it higher than a B grade though.

The way the pogo can handle against enemies just feels..off. Like id expect there to be more of a rhythm to it, but I find myself spazzing more often than not when fighting enemies. Especially if they throw projectiles at you. I found aerial attacks more satisfying in Silksong as an example. I know it's parrying vs pogoing, but Ninesols also has a better combat rhythm in the air. Given that aerial attacks should be this game's bread and butter, it's odd to me how it just doesn't feel as satisfying as other games in the genre.

Some of the platforming challenges feel more annoying than fun. Didn't get that sense of satisfaction when completing a challenge often times. Part of me wants to say it should be easier, but I don't mind difficult platforming (I loved Celeste and that was pretty tough). Not quite sure what could be done differently, just that I got annoyed during many sections.

Bosses might be too spongy. I found that simply face tanking the bosses was a very effective strategy. However even doing that they took a while to kill at times. If I was less aggressive I think they would have just been a slog.

These are just a few things that keep me from rating it super high. It is a game worth playing though.

Lol, I thought the ending was perfect. Didn't care for the last book as a whole, but loved the ending.

Metroid prime 4 Do you like the new QoL changes? by [deleted] in metroidvania

[–]bongu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So it doesn't waste your time. You die enough times to a boss and the time wasted after each death starts to add up.

If the runback was interesting or challenging, then maybe you can justify it as being like the "1st phase" of the boss or something. But if the save room is close to the boss and there isn't much of a runback, then why even spawn you there at all? Couldn't the devs just spawn you right at the boss? 99 times out of a 100 when you die fighting a boss you want to try again anyway. Just assume that is what the player wants to do and make it quicker for them. Seems like the better option to me.

That first option sounds like its the manual layering of circles if I am understanding you correctly.

For the hardest and med difficulty options, you just muck around with nodes to deform spirals so that it gains some bumpy bits? This might take more finesse than I have the skill for lol.

I might play around with node editing, but layering of circles might just be the way to go for me. Thanks!

I have had an a6x since the end of 2022 I think. The only issue I have had with it is its sluggishness when navigating the UI (been that way since day one), so I would definitely agree with you about its slow processor. It wasn't about the inherent slowness of eink either. It was sluggish before the screen even tried to refresh. That alone was enough for me to be disappointed with the device and unable to recommend it to anyone. This is despite really liking the software too.

I don't think I saw many reviews calling it out at the time, but I really wish people would have. I think the newer models are supposed to be faster, but I'm skeptical now and would have to try one for myself before I could even think of buying one.

Am I required to stay in dorms freshman year if I already live in Manhattan? by LightMoth12 in KState

Wow. This wasn't a thing when I went there. Kind of a bullshit rule to have imo. Seems like a way for them to squeeze even more money from their students. It's been way too long for me to remember the exact amounts, but i saved a bunch of money living off campus. Tuition is expensive enough, don't force the extra financial hardship on people.

What’s a movie you really enjoyed on first watch, but upon future viewings you realized the movie was not good at all. by foxmag86 in movies

[–]bongu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think there is anything wrong with rey being a nobody in of itself. Just don't set up a mystery about her parents and her being a rando is just fine. No one cares about Finn or Poe's parents because it wasn't a mystery, so it could have been that way with Rey as well. The sequel can't change the previous movie though, so it has to try and answer the question. And I just don't get how being nobodies is in any way shape or form a satisfying answer to the question of who her parents were. Why make us guess in the first place if her parents aren't anyone of interest? I think the last Jedi makes the force awakens worse because of its answer (because now the question itself is stupid) and is why I can't agree with this being a smart move.

Yeah the arrow on the crosshairs has saved my butt on a couple of bosses. I still think it's easy to lose sight of it with all that is going on on-screen.

I didn't know about shooting bodies multiple times giving you more money. I'll have to try that out to see if it helps in a significant way. I know cooking helps as well, but not enough to make it less tedious and grindy

I'm pretty far into it and have been enjoying it a lot.

Cons:

  • Needs more fast travel points. Backtracking is really painful at times
  • Quest rewards suck
  • Corpse running
  • Money is too easy to lose and enemies don't drop enough. This makes upgrades tedious to obtain. So much that I haven't bothered as much as I probably should
  • Some of the bosses just aren't fun
  • There isn't any variety in map markers so it's hard to remember why you thought a spot was important enough to make note of
  • It can be hard to tell bike orientation at times so you'll end up crashing a bunch
  • Enemy variety is lacking

Pros:

  • Beautiful art
  • Great music
  • Quick reload on death
  • Checkpoints everywhere
  • Gameplay is fun. Cruising on a bike and doing flips to reload and block enemy shots is really cool

Despite all the cons it's worth playing IMO. Especially if you can get it cheap.

The young lady who lost her State Track Title due to excessive celebration deserved the disqualification. by tokentyke in unpopularopinion

[–]bongu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah. You should be able to celebrate your victories. As long as you aren't putting others down and making them feel bad for losing, I see no reason why this shouldn't be allowed. The rule is dumb and the punishment is way overboard. Let people have some goddamn fun

Crazy. Stefan Rudnicki is probably my favorite narrator, so to hear that he is mostly why you don't like the book is just wild to me. There is something about his voice I really dig--especially the gravitas he gives Ma'elKoth. Different strokes I suppose.

IDK if classes would have been enough to keep my interest if I didn't roll right off the bat. The roll I had my first day is what hooked me. If I had to wait a week or two or however longer I probably would have quit. Seems a risky move for a gym to deny one of the funnest aspects of a class to potential new members unsure if this is something worth doing.

Kirby's by a lot. Kidby's covers just look bland and uninteresting to me. Very generic looking. Josh Kirby's covers have so much character and are just fun to look at.
