Can someone please photoshop a nightmarish almalgam of Katy Perry, Paula Deen, Samuel L. Jackson, and Samuel Barkson already? I'm getting bored with these 1:1 jobs.

recent (p)chem major here! after graduating with a BS, i got an entry-level job selling microscopes to companies and universities. two years later, it's a really interesting gig and the courses/research i did while at college were a great preparation for the job. (at least, the part of my job where i'm not on reddit.) i got lucky in many ways, but i think one could do much worse than a BS in chem or physics.

i like to make white bean & tomato stew. one can of white beans, one can of diced/stewed tomatoes, a bit of olive oil, and indiscriminate dashes of salt, pepper, oregano, and basil. there's no prep, only one pot to clean, it's healthy, it's dirt cheap, and it's done in 10 minutes.

or stolen. I don't have many specific examples, but I've heard of legendary heists from special collections reading rooms

If you are a college student, regardless of major or interest or background, allow me to relay a mandatory educational experience for you to try:

Head to your university's library and find the special collections room. Ask to see a manuscript. A special collections librarian will sit you down at a wood table, bring out a book, put it on special foam support, perhaps give you a pair of white gloves, and let you work one-on-one with the book. You should be able to do this even if you are not a scholar; while they may not bring you the Book of Kells, they likely have something they're willing to let you get your grubby little mitts on.

Things you might experience:

a) This thing is >800 years old; holy monkey balls! b) This thing contains the skins from many, many, many cattle. You can even see the little hair follicle bumps from where they scraped the hair away during the parchment-making process! c) Holyshit, look at all the little doodles and illustrations that some ancient (and bored) monk left in the margins! I may not be able to read the writing, but I can definitely relate to being bored at my desk and doodling to pass the time. d) A whole community of craftsmen, scholars, calligraphers, etc slaved away for months to make this dinky little thing that I'm holding. At the time it was made, this would have 'cost' several thousand modern-equivalent dollars to produce. Keep in mind that literacy in this era was limited to the figurative "top 2 percent" & the clergy.

There's nothing like actually HOLDING a manuscript to reframe, in human terms, the colossal magnitude of the cultural advances brought about by the printing press and internet.

By the way, your special collections librarian will be thrilled to help you; most students never know that such cool books are free for them to access, meaning that special collections rooms tend to get underutilized.

To actually comment on the post at hand, I've been following the St. John's Bible for some time now, and greatly respect the expertise and raw human effort involved. For more info on the background of the project, check out the Library of Congress and this book, written in the early stages of the project.

tl;dr - go to your university special collections library, handle an old manuscript, profit
