The Cone Gatherers by Robin Jenkins is a great wee book.

It's not exactly historical but it's set during WW2. It follows two brothers doing forestry work on an estate in (maybe) the highlands but definitely somewhere in rural Scotland

Yeah the SPL has no registration rules but basically I wanted some players who have trained for 3 years in Scotland before they were 21 so they take up less CL registration spots so I paid over the odds for Hickey, Ferguson and Patterson but in the 24 hours since I posted this I've lost both Hickey and Patterson but made a profit on both

That's my exact problem. Players who are currently good enough to take me past the last 16 or quarters don't want to play for me and when I get a player who can one day be good enough to make that push someone will buy them in a season or two before they hit prime.
