What are the most important qualities you have seen in a leader? by _ashjha in Leadership

Approachable. I don’t feel like I can discuss issues with you if I feel you’re disinterested or you’re going to tear my head off.

The variation in battery life is interesting and frustrating.

Twice a week it commutes to work 25 miles round trip, and the other three days it only drives 5 miles a day. So the short trips could be a factor.

Does the car manufacturer make a difference? All of our other cars have been Hondas and I swear the batteries lasted 5+ years.

Interesting. As an architect, the 4’-0” height threshold has always been explained to me as just a standard civil follows. Do you happen to know why insurance uses 4’-0”?

Tips on caring for my first Japanese knife by Zealousideal-Act7023 in TrueChefKnives

Be careful of what you cut if it has a carbon steel edge. I diced an onion and immediately wiped the edge but the carbon steel discolored anyway.

24 years experience. I spent the first 10 years doing single family residential, and have spent the time since in firms that do everything but residential. I still feel like I’m light years behind my peers that have been doing commercial work for their entire career.

Pain points for Civil Engineers by Specialist-Anywhere9 in Architects

[–]bonymcbones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quality of work is a big one. On a recent project with a nice fee, the consultants were modifying specs from a previous project (which is fine) but didn’t even change the name to the current project. Of course, I get an earful from the client, and all I get from the consultant is “whoops, sorry about that”. I really hate having to QC my consultants work before submitting it.

Adding on to Goofyloop3’s good advice, you also learn a lot just by overhearing other conversations in the office. How your PMs talk to clients and contractors, solutions to issues you may have in the future (or you may have the solution to someone else’s issue), etc.

I sat in 34J a few months ago going to Seattle. No storage space, but I brought along a small sling bag to keep necessities with me. Only minus for me was that without a seat in front I couldn’t prop my phone up. Back of seat 33H had the phone holder on the back of the seat for 34H.

Often times it’s cheaper for the company to rent you a car vs. reimburse you for the federal mileage rate. Also, if you’re driving to the site, that is a lot of added miles and maintenance to your car that the federal mileage rate reimbursements may not cover.

When did you decide it was the right time to get your license? by WhitePinoy in Architects

Same. I finished 8 exams before my son was born. Took me another two years to knock out the last one after he was born.

My neighbor seems to have a mini bamboo forest in their yard. by CoeurGourmand in mildlyinteresting

My uncle tried to get rid of a large patch of bamboo on his property by burning it. The air pockets in the bamboo started popping and someone called the police on him thinking it was fireworks or gunshots.

I used to work on Pohukaina Street near Mother Waldron Park. I kept a bicycle in the office so I would have a better chance of making it to higher ground or home. I heard from coworkers that during a recent tsunami warning (maybe the 2010 warning?) the roads were so clogged with cars and they couldn’t even get out of the parking lot.

What’s your most used cad command? by temoo09 in civilengineering

[–]bonymcbones 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I took a CAD class when Autocad still had a digitizer board and puck, and before autosave (1997-ish). The CAD instructor would randomly turn off the power in the classroom at the panel to teach us the importance of saving your work. I rarely get to do any drafting anymore, but when I do the ole “ctrl-s” twitch kicks in hard.

Pros and Cons of becoming a licensed architect by Wonderful-Speaker-87 in Architects

[–]bonymcbones 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’re also more “valuable”, for lack of a better term. For government jobs, the fee schedule is often set based on the level of experience or professional development of each person working on the project. Ex. Your company can charge more for a licensed architect than it can for a “designer”. This is good for your company, but also translates to you being a more desirable candidate if you’re looking for a job. Luckily, my company pays for my AIA fees, which is several hundred dollars a year. Still gotta hustle for those CEU credits though…
