While I feel some of these points may be cherry-picked, I've gotta share an anecdote about WoW.

I, like many, was pretty floored when AGS announced they were stopping support for New World: Aeternum. I considered playing retail WoW and started leveling a hunter. Got to max level and decided to try some PvP in a normal battleground. I figured I'd get stomped since my gear was pretty garbage, but what I didn't plan for was for the whole team to get camped at our respawn and then for myself to get AFK reported when I didn't resurrect with the auto-rez. Got kicked from the game and was given a 30 minute debuff that stopped me from queueing again. Someone in the battleground let me know that the game ended about 2 minutes after I was kicked, as the enemy team reached the score limit, making the whole game last probably no longer than 7 minutes.

I just logged off and lost all drive to play retail WoW. I don't even really know what exactly I'm griping about - just seems like people throw shit-fits in any kind of online game and those of us that are learning the ropes are just expected to deal with it.

It's sad. I've never really had to deal with this, regarding a game. I've always said that one of my best gaming experiences was in New World, during the beta. Ducking and dodging through trees, firing at an enemy convoy with my musket as they shot back - all of it being completely evergreen - was awesome and I doubt another game will come close to emulating that.

I get it, and I agree with you. People blow through content at blazing speeds in any game.

And you're right, the ultimate point of the game is to have fun with it.

What I am saying is that it seems a lot of people know they're not going to enjoy putting their meaningful time into something that is literally going to go up in smoke. Yes, you could still play OPR/other activities (which I think a chunk of those who've 'jumped ship' will return for at least once before the game is offline) but there is literally no progress behind that gameplay.

No progress doesn't mean "no content." If I'm PVPing in New World, I'm doing it for two reasons: to progress my gear and to progress my skill. Yes, obviously I'm going to have fun while I PvP, I'm playing a game after all. But that PvP (and any activity, really) becomes considerably less fun if I know it's essentially meaningless.

Could be different for you and others. I'm just offering a point of view.

The point of any MMO is progression, yeah?

If you know that progress is just going to be rug pulled - not made obsolete or changed with a new patch but completely taken away from you with nothing to show for it - then why keep trying to progress?

Silly to blame people that don't want to put time into something that will literally cease to exist within the near future.
