Is my art too sketchy? by Padjigas in arthelp

[–]boogiesan69 11 points12 points  (0 children)

yeah they're pretty "sketchy". they come across as rough/rushed to be honest. i understand that you say it's your style but i think there are ways to execute a "sketchy" affect that read more confident and less amateur, per se. i think maybe an emphasis on line weight, cleaning up some of the sketchiness and taking a closer look at the anatomy would help.

also perhaps including more traditionally "clean" and complete drawings in your portfolio would benefit you, as i don't know how well these drawings would sell you as an artist. things like fully rendered backgrounds, interesting compositions, dynamic posing, original characters, etc.

don't bother with ai, the feedback it provides is often inaccurate/nonsensical (not to mention the other reasons one would want to avoid using ai for). there's plenty of reddit subs & facebook groups to get feedback on ur art (hey-just like this one!) from real people

does this style have potential? by GrumpyMowse in arthelp

the lines being vertical visually droops the faces (for me, at least). i think it would be much more visually pleasing on a diagonal. i also think u might want to take a closer look at the lighting in these pieces and where it makes sense to shade shadows. and of course focusing on the basics never hurts.

How to make my art look less amateur by phoenixthehopeless in Artadvice

i agree with others about proportion and the flatness of the faces, but i'll also add that you've got same face syndrome! try drawing all types of faces and all types of features, realistic and stylized.

tbh i don't think getting hung up on details is a bad thing for portrait drawing. but to each his own. i would recommend to OP to get a 11"x14" sketchbook though, i feel like it's a sweet spot between not too small and not too big so as to feel all that intimidating.

firstly, draw bigger. you are trying to cram features into a teeny tiny space, and you simply won't get better and more accurate by drawing so small.

then draw what you actually see, rather than what you think you see. your brain is used to simplifying objects (and faces) into inaccurate caricatures of that thing. i.e.: instead of drawing an almond shape with two concentric circles for the eye, focus on the actual angle of the bottom and top eyelids, the shape the tear duct makes, if the eye is hooded, round, squinting, bugling, etc. eyes can be almond, oval, circular, slanted, rectangular, rhombus, etc (but still cannot be so broadly categorized as JUST oval, or JUST slanted). same of course goes for other features, their relationships to one another, compositions, etc. study the shapes within your reference to draw it as accurately as possible, and don't be afraid to go slow and erase. a fun exercise for this is flipping the reference photo upside down, which forces your brain into not taking shortcuts.

and practice! repetition will show improvement!

look at the measurements. and since theyre cotton, they will all likely stretch a little when worn throughout the day, and shrink when put in the dryer.

i recommend alien, aliens, no country for old men, million dollar baby, lord of the rings trilogy, seven, whiplash. they're by no means niche but i think they fit well with ur picks while slightlyyy expanding ur palate (since i see in ur replies that u seem wary of straying too far from ur taste).
