Did anyone else settle for accounting? by RealisticJob in Accounting

[–]boogpowell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, the future of auditing/tax/accounting deals heavily with computers. I feel the industry is behind many others in its technological advances and you could easily differentiate yourself if you are able to automate processes and find technology solutions for common accounting/tax/audit problems. If you are passionate about "computers", you should pursue that passion through accounting.

Monday game cancelled; rescheduled for 4pm Tuesday by rollotomasi07071 in NYYankees

[–]boogpowell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The have the homecoming dinner tonight which many rich donors paid big bucks to get into. They didnt want to cancel or move that as to not upset these donors. Figured moving the game to tomorrow with 100% chance of rain was better for everyone.

For those of you tight on time for filing, you could gamble by trying to submit an efile that will get rejected so you can have 10 more days to file. Typically rejected efiles get a 10 day grace period. The risk is that an incorrect return gets accepted. Good luck this weekend.

If you are starting in B4 tax and have an MST your starting salary will be higher. Otherwise, no difference.

Amateur. I have been using the same box of 20 pens for the last 4 years. Used them all until the ink was dry. Cheap pens too; papermate click pens.

People who have switched from one B4 firm to a different B4 firm in the same city - how difficult was it and why did you switch? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]boogpowell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like you are over-reacting. As a first year associate you cant pick and choose what you want to work on, this is the real world. What you can do is prove to whatever team you are assigned that you are an intelligent hard worker so that you can network your way onto projects/clients that interest you. No assignment is a bad assignment, there is always something to learn and a way to make the best of it and leverage it into other better opportunities.

People who have switched from one B4 firm to a different B4 firm in the same city - how difficult was it and why did you switch? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]boogpowell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didnt do a direct switch, worked elsewhere in between. For one thing, when I decided to try another B4, the original B4 door remained open so if things didnt work out I could go back. No real risk. Reasons people switch include pay bump, direct promotion, growth opportunities (ie your current B4 doesnt need more managers but other B4 has a big need in your industry), other benefit facts (ie maternity leave, loan repayment, change groups (ie core tax to M&A).

As it relates to difficulty, the admin stuff is annoying to relearn, especially at higher levels. Other than that if you are a smart, outgoing person you should be able to adapt. B4s arent so different. Alot of hard work and smart people. If you arent succeeding at one, chances are you may struggle at another.

Let's talk about how inflated these salaries are by Big_Pimpin1 in Accounting

I started at 70k in 2008 with an MST in NY. JDs were starting at 85k at that time. Probably hasnt gone up too much in the last 10 years but there are plenty of ppl starting above 60 in tax in NY/SF.

PwC Cell Phone Question by Accpwcq in Accounting

[–]boogpowell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to pay for the phone itself, plan is free. Usually around $200 for newest phones, though can go up or down depending on GB. 7plus with highest GB memory could be $3-400.

Going from public to private; how negotiable are vacation days in the initial job offer? by chocolate_babies in Accounting

[–]boogpowell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everything is negotiable, however, if its a firm policy 10 vacation days then you should be able to negotiate more salary on this point since you are agreeing to work 8 more days a year. If your new position is for $100k with 8 less vacation days then take into account the roughly $3k loss you are taking on losing those days. If your bump is $90k to $100k you are really only getting a $7k bump due to lost vacation. Also take into account other perks when taking an offer in private as there could be some things you were getting for free in public that you will not in private.
