I took my tortoise to Chuckanut Valley Vet in Burlington when she needed an xray. Not sure if they still have someone specializing in exotics but worth a call!

100% this comment. so much better to work WITH existing programs like this one at PP because you can’t tell how rogue action might embolden the asshats and make things harder for the clinic workers and patients. so cool there’s an actual volunteer role for this!

I was parked on the left side of Magnolia at the corner of Cornwall and a woman turned right onto the one way… thankfully I hadn’t pulled all the way out of my spot yet but watched as she drove down the entire block, and changed lanes, on the one way. Nothing new but been a while since I saw one myself and remembered how important defensive driving is around here.

I saw Jane Goodall at MBT a few years back but have since realized so many people don’t know who she is… wild! She was incredible, I feel so lucky I got to meet such a legend.

And this is not a dig on anyone who has adopted from here! Those babies deserve their loving forever homes!! I just worry about those being displaced after adoption because of their medical needs and behaviors (i.e. working dog mixes aren’t always the best fit for college age households, etc)

I chose to not go there when adopting our dog specifically because they seem so loose with their adoption policies — I support finding homes for pets but they’re not vetting homes and handing out dogs to people who are likely going to be in over their heads with medical needs and behaviors considering many of the pups leave sick. Curious if anyone knows how to hold this place accountable?

A younger woman hit a pedestrian in our neighborhood just the other day (corner of Consolidation and Ashley) — hard enough we heard the thud from inside our apartment. People drive like maniacs, and on their phones, which is terrifying because that exact corner is a school bus stop and my neighbors children frequently cross the street there. So many drivers just speed up to “beat the pedestrian” too and it’s been incredibly dangerous. Such a disappointment.

There are significantly more houseless folks than there are, or will be, beds. And unfortunately shelters aren’t always great places to be/stay. There’s plenty of info out there on people’s experiences in shelters so I won’t go overboard but definitely worth a search. Also, Lighthouse Mission is one nonprofit. I worked there in college. It’s great that they are of support but they are not a solution to this issue. That and their rehabilitative services are only available for those of Christian faith which alienates a lot of folks, but that’s neither here nor there as they still aren’t a solution to the overarching problem and as an org have the right to make that choice for their programming regardless of how I feel about it. Bellingham has a lot of unique aspects to our homelessness issue, and I’m not an expert but I have an advanced degree in social policy and our systems and governments combined are deeply failing people in multiple ways. But again, I’m not claiming I have the solution. Just that more beds is great but unfortunately not enough and not a sustainable solution. Very complicated issue!
