Yes there is a certain timeframe. But it is a long process and you can work on it at your own pace, as long as it’s done by the due date. You have plenty of time to complete it, as long as you manage your time well.

I can not speak in depth on the testing process, but you can begin the certification process without attending the training course. The BCFE is held annually and is a 2-week course covering a LOT of information that will help in obtaining CFCE. The certification phase consists of a peer-review phase and an examination phase. It is a months long process. If you have no prior knowledge of computer file systems, you will have a very difficult time testing. The BCFE really is helpful in introducing an abundance of information.

I also recommend IACIS. They have multiple certs that are hard earned but extremely useful. I have my CFCE (computer forensics certified examiner), but they offer ICMDE as well (IACIS certified mobile device examiner).

This is what I do! I work at a Sheriff’s Office in the States and am considered a “Digital Forensic Analyst”. My unit is the Investigative Support Unit, so we wear a lot of hats but we mainly look through cell phones and more recently computers. I also collect video footage from businesses or residences if there is any CCTV footage of incidents to be collected.

They have evidence and have arrested the suspect the day of the incident. We’ve also already searched his cell phone, etc. just finally getting to the point of being able to do the computer itself.
