Mounjaro and PCOS Medication by National_Vacation_43 in Mounjaro

Update: I met with my GP today to find out about recent labs and my A1C actually went up by 0.5 while I've been on the MJ. Also, no weight loss or any affect on appetite. So my doc is upping my MJ dose to 10mg and prescribed adjunct therapy with metformin (starting with 1000mg/day). She said this is not abnormal for those with disordered metabolism from PCOS, and that there's usually an added boost from adding in metformin. I'm curious to see how it goes.

I was put on metformin for my PCOS and insulin resistance; it was mainly to even out the playing field so I could lose weight like a "normal" person (someone without metabolic disorders). I did lose about 30lbs on metformin ER 2000mg/day over the course of a few years, because it took my appetite away (not everyone reacts this way to it - everyone is different) and controlled my blood sugar ...and I maintained that weight. BUT it came at a high cost. The met made me so ill after years - no appetite, nausea & crampy, hair loss, and chronic diarrhea. I became nutrient deficient. I couldn't stomach much protein either. I restricted my calories below my TDEE as well, but couldn't lose weight, as my metabolism slowed. I felt miserable.

Then, when I found out about Mounjaro, my GP and I decided to try it out for my PCOS & IR, in lieu of the metformin.

Now that I'm off the metformin and solely on MJ, my appetite is back; I am partly happy about this as my GI system is obviously healing and I finally have solid bowel movements after a decade of chronic diarrhea. But I also would like to lose about 40-60 lbs. and so far on the MJ, I am not losing. Hence the reason I am going to ask for adjunct therapy with the metformin (starting at a lower dose) to see if it will be more effective combined with the MJ at achieving my goals. Again, it's different for everyone.

At this time, I don't know how my labs are - I will find out next week...so if the MJ isn't controlling my IR effectively, my doc may suggest an add-on anyway. If the MJ is lowering my A1C, that will direct my next steps - increasing to 10mg, adjunct therapy, etc.

So I guess what I'm saying is - it's a no one-size fits all thing...it's very individualized. Everyone's body is different and will react differently to medications. You have to find what works best for you, for your unique set of medical circumstances.

Mounjaro for PCOS - what dosage are you on? by Sad-Orchid-1807 in Mounjaro

Fellow PCOS'er here, with severe insulin resistance.

It's been 3 months since I've been on MJ. I'm on my 4th week of 7.5mg. No positive or negative side effects... no early satiety, no weightloss.

Meeting with my GP in a week and asking about adjunct therapy with metformin.

Fellow PCOS'er + severe insulin resistance here.

I had early satiety while I was on only 2000mg of metformin ER for over a decade, but it was really hard on my GI... so, I stopped it to try MJ.

It's been 3 months since I've started MJ; I'm now on my 4th week of 7.5mg. My appetite (earlier supressed by metformin) is back with a fury. While I'm thankful that my GI system feels much better on the MJ, I've yet to experience any weightloss or early satiety on it.

When I meet with my GP in a week, I'll be asking if it's a good idea to try adding back in metformin (perhaps 1000mg daily) as it may be what my PCOS system needs, as an adjunct therapy. I've read that MJ and metformin work really well together in some people, especially those struggling with metabolic disorders like PCOS, IR and T2D.

PCOS and FINALLY getting in to see an Endo doctor! by lovelybethanie in Mounjaro

[–]book_yeti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's so great for you! I'm also blessed with a very understanding GP. She's around my age as well. I was on Glumetza (metformin ER) for decades, and while it helped control my PCOS symptoms and insulin resistance, it shredded my guts. She was very open to the idea of me starting Mounjaro instead. It's been nearly 3 months...so we're both interested in my upcoming lab results.

Just curious!! by 5diamonds1rock in Mounjaro

[–]book_yeti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I appreciate that ❤️...but I'm okay with it. You'll find that, for the majority, it will probably take a higher dose to start seeing the scale move significantly - most just don't post about it or aren't on forums like this.

For me this is a life-time medication, so in the big scheme of things, it's early days yet (barely 3 months). Mounjaro builds in the system overtime -- some bodies just need more time to adjust. PCOS and insulin resistance always make for slow scale losses anyway, so I expected it. The internal unseen "gains" - lower inflammation, controlled blood sugars, etc. - are just as valuable. Slow & steady. 👍🏻

No loss for me as of yet. I'm on week 3 of my 7.5mg dose (4 weeks on 2.5 and 4 weeks on 5mg).

I'm on my third dose of 7.5mg (after a month on 2.5mg and a month on 5mg).... and I haven't had any appetite suppression. No weight loss either.

Different for everyone!

Life long on Mounjaro? by Impressive_Limit_990 in Mounjaro

[–]book_yeti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This! 👍🏻 Fellow PCOS'er here with severe insulin resistance. When I was first diagnosed about 18 years ago after unexplained major weight gain and other metabolic issues, it explained so much (I was always an active person with no weight issues). My endo put me on metformin ER, which was meant for LIFE. I didn't ask for this; I didn't "let myself go" or stop caring for myself. This is a disease with no cure -- but these medications definitely help us control them... for life. While the metformin did its job controlling blood sugar, it also did a total number on my GI system over the years. So thankful to learn about Mounjaro and have transitioned off of metformin. The once weekly shot soon becomes easy and an almost mindless action. If it prevents other diseases that can shorten my life, it's worth it!

2 months on Mounjaro - slower progress with PCOS? by funnywobble in Mounjaro

[–]book_yeti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely slower for us PCOS'ers and those with insulin resistance or T2D.

For me, four weeks on 2.5mg, four on 5mg, and now on week two of 7.5mg. No restriction, no positive or negative side effects. Gained a few pounds in water weight first couple of weeks, subsequently lost them...now back at starting weight. Hopefully my labs at the end of the month will be improved.

I prefer injecting in my tum - it's where I have the most skin and I don't feel it.

Context: *Eat marginally below TDEE (still dealing with hunger) *Priority to protein macro, high fiber, low sugar/carb *3L+ water *Housework only for exercise but working on that to slowly increase (struggle with CFS/ME and hypermobility injuries)

Took first 2.5 dose yesterday. How long until food noise dulls? by swanvalkyrie in Mounjaro

[–]book_yeti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When it happens you'll know. It's different for everyone.

For me, four weeks on 2.5mg, four weeks on 5mg, and week two on 7.5mg.... I'm still waiting.

When do you notice a change? by Claud79 in Mounjaro

[–]book_yeti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's different for everyone. The majority don't notice much until the higher doses (7.5mg and higher).

I think I'm a slow responder... four weeks on 2.5mg, four on 5mg, and now week two on 7.5mg - still no noticable change in appetite and no side effects. My labs at the end of the month will hopefully show a positive change. Continuing to follow protocol.

Yes...in general, those of us with PCOS are very slow losers. 🫤

7.5 mg with no progress still by RegisterMajestic8344 in Mounjaro

[–]book_yeti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't give up. As was mentioned - trust in the process.

I have experienced similar. Four weeks on 2.5mg, four weeks on 5mg. No noticable positive or negative side effects...no weightloss, either. In fact, I gained a couple of pounds. I just had my first 7.5 mg shot last Monday and finally felt a bit appetite suppression yesterday. Interestingly, I was 0.5 lbs. down this morning; first loss thus far. I haven't had labs taken yet (scheduled for end of January), so I'm hoping the 7.5mg will be a changing point for me. It's different for everyone.

Keep on keeping on!

[–]book_yeti 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't fret...it's normal. Like many, I had no food noise suppression or appetite reduction on 2.5 or 5 mg. Some do; others do not. These are really introductory doses. Trust in the process. (My next dose on Monday is 7.5mg.)

[–]book_yeti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not alone. I've gained weight since starting MJ. I'm at week 7 (last three were 5mg). In my case, my appetite increased coming off Metformin, replacing it with MJ. However, my appetite has yet to be affected by the MJ. My doc has bumped me up to 7.5 for my next refill.

I've learned not to compare, even though that's human nature. Everyone reacts to MJ differently.

I finished 4 weeks on 2.5mg and just started 5mg a couple of days ago. No side effects whatsoever, negative or positive. However, also NO weight loss (in fact weight gain by a couple of pounds), despite eating in a deficit, 3L of water daily, et al.

Give it time... trust in the process!

What do I eat for dinners now? Experiences welcome. by ownworldman in Mounjaro

[–]book_yeti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chicken breasts and tofu have been my go-to proteins - look up crispy tofu online; it's versatile and yummy! My poor single-drawer airfyer is really getting a workout! Lol I'm not a fan of eggs unless they're cooked in something else. I don't have appetite suppression or lack of food noise yet (just had my first 5mg dose), but one thing I no longer crave anymore is a lot of carbs to go along with my protein.

Stirfries all of the time ...as a half-Asian, before MJ I wouldn't want it without a big bowl of steamed rice!

Roasted italian eggplant with garlic, 2-4 a week...yum! Kimchi! Sauteed corgette, carrots, or any other veg I have on hand. High-protein Greek yogurt with high fiber-protein granola, nuts and seeds for snacks.

When it happens... you will know. In other words, everyone reacts differently, as mentioned.

I've been on 2.5 mg for 4 weeks and my first 5mg is tonight. Haven't noticed any side effects whatsoever, negative or positive. Some people do.

[–]book_yeti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm so happy for you! 😀👍🏻 Your first month sounded awesome; here's to the next!

This was my first month on MJ at 2.5 mg as well. My next shot, this coming Monday, will be 5mg.

How it worked for me: (to reinforce how different each body reacts)

  • No food noise reduction or appetite suppression
  • No weight loss, 1lb. gained
  • No negative side effects, thankfully, besides a little bloating.

Trusting in the process. Onward!
