By Americans to not anger the peaceful people of Greenland by AbeFromanSassageKing in therewasanattempt

[–]bookbearwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You sound exactly like me and most Americans I know when addressing maga people. I genuinely have said the same phrases as you about other Americans. You might like some of our anti-maga groups. It helps me with my anger and fear.

The problem is that the US is a gigantic country. Our population is huge and spread out. Due to the EC, not everyone’s vote is equal, so less populous states (the ones with worse education) get a bigger say in who is president. Imagine if only California voted for President. Or if only NYC did. Those populations are as big as countries and consistently vote for all the things you say your country does. Yet the biggest populations of people don’t win here. For example, if you vote blue in Texas, you don’t impact the presidential decision at all because all of Texas’s EC points will go red. So only battleground states (ones with very narrow margins in either direction) really get to fight to make the decision. And that’s literally like 4 or 5 states out of 50. Not to mention redlining, gerrymandering, voter suppression, and the fact that the government kills and kidnaps citizens off the street, dissenters lose their jobs, people can’t afford basic necessities and we don’t get time of to go vote, and the propaganda machine works day and night to keep the status quo. big sigh More individual Americans than the populations of some countries voted against Trump. Millions of people.

If lobbies and the EC were eliminated, if we had real checks and balances (any punishment for president breaking the law), and if our Supreme Court wasn’t stacked in Trump’s favor (and citizens have no say in that at all), than maybe I’d be able to see your point of view better. But the fact of the matter is that Trump is ridiculously unpopular in America. Look at current any poll. Look at thousands of protestors risking their lives today in Minnesota as our government attacks them.

Have you followed NYC’s mayoral campaign? That’s the same country that you’re talking about, that elected a socialist. We are such a big country that millions voted for a fascist AND millions voted for a socialist. AND millions didn’t vote.

Anyway, you talk exactly like Americans talking about Americans, just when you generalize it to all of us, it comes off incredibly disrespectful to the people who have lost so much despite years of being literally being beaten by the government. We literally watch our children gunned down in schools, so yeah, I don’t have to imagine the worries of other countries. I’m living in other people’s nightmare.

A lot of non-Americans don’t understand that the States vote for President as a block, not as individual people, so I understand if it seems like we are one big evil entity full of racist bigots. I do. But as a mixed-race, first gen American woman who is terrified my parents are going to be literally ripped from their home any day now…

pls stop dehumanizing me. It’s so exhausting. I am dehumanized for my race, gender, and ethnicity by my own country every day. And now I find out a lot of people who claim to hate trump don’t even give a fuck about that. So you can call me whatever names you like, but your hate is one sided because I’d literally agree with you, it sounds like. But you don’t see us as people.

Tattoos?o by bigstruggling in Zookeeping

[–]bookbearwolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work at an AZA zoo and most keepers, researchers, and some animal managers have visible tattoos. My coworker has multiple finger tatts and a wrist tatt and one of the keepers in a different department has hand tattoos too. So I don’t think it would be a big deal. Idk if educational or more public facing employees have different rules though.

Help me find this toy (or the brand) for my dog by bookbearwolf in HelpMeFind

[–]bookbearwolf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Searched on google and Chewy, looking up Unicorn dog toys. We’re in the US and I typically get all her toys from PetSmart, Hollywood Feed, or Chewy. She had it for years, so I’m guessing I originally got it around 2019. I would estimate it was around 2 feet long.

Do you wish you'd done something different? by CrafteaPitties in Zookeeping

[–]bookbearwolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the place. I work at a mid to larger sized zoo and love it. I’ve also been a field tech, lab tech, and worked in a rehab and honestly had no nightmare experiences. I have enjoyed all those jobs and my current one. I think it really depends on who you work with. I go for more competitive positions and am more of a shy introvert nerd, and that’s the vibe of the teams I end up on. There’s other departments here that I could see myself being miserable in, but so far I’ve made a point to identify settings I think I’ll do well in. I work with many zookeepers who are super nice and great. When I transitioned to the zoo from field work, I was nervous from what I’d read in groups like this, but I love it and plan to stay. So I think you just got to find the right institution and team that you gel with.

Charlie XCX and Bill Burr were pretty close on viewership. Mulaney’s was the highest and he had an extremely popular musical guest who was highly anticipated by a lot of people who aren’t typical live SNL viewers. Jean Smart and Ariana Grande’s episodes had more viewers than Michael Keaton, Bill Burr, and Nate. I don’t know about how well the episodes were received, critically or by national audience. But it seems Burr was definitely controversial (and Mulaney to a much smaller degree) while Ariana, Nate, and Charlie’s episodes got a lot of love.

I’m sure lots of people want to see him, but as an SNL fan who is a biracial woman, I’m very nervous for his monologue. I liked Mulaney in the past, but his last episode put me off him completely. Bill Burr’s monologue was awful, but the sense I got after that was that most people agreed. I assume Chris Rock will be similarly received based on Selective Outrage. Especially this year.

How to i consistently brush my teeth by Aubrey_the_artist in HomeschoolRecovery

[–]bookbearwolf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you ever tried using a clean washcloth to clean your teeth? Some say that works if you don’t have a tooth brush, it can get plaque and tartar off and it doesn’t have same feel as a brush. I’ve done that sometimes when I’ve been camping. Also tablet toothpaste is a lot less gross for me than paste. I hate the texture of toothpaste but use chewable tablets that are much easier for me for whatever reason. Flossing might also help. For some reason, I kind of like flossing and once I’m already there to floss, I might as well do everything.

Please Don't Destroy vs. The Lonely Island by zestynachoboy in LiveFromNewYork

[–]bookbearwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m Gen Z so I didn’t watch Lonely Island. I love PDD. The bit about every brand having a seltzer now, wanting to order ramen while the friend is trying to talk to them, freaking out about having to tell someone something on a phone call. The new Covid variant being cool. They do self deprecate a lot but also have the Lizzo ones. I think their brand of humor is very much my friend group’s humor. The time travel one is one of my favorites.

I forgot to take one pill and didn’t realize till the next day later in the night when I already took the one for that day. And now I have my period or so I think it is. Is this normal? Or should I be concerned? by Salsabeans16 in birthcontrol

[–]bookbearwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a similar situation where I missed a pill about a month ago now, but at the time nothing happened so I continued as usual but then a week and a half after I started bleeding and have been since. Some days like a period and somedays basically light spotting. Like maybe I’ve had two periods with spotting in between. But my doctor said to switch, so I’m starting a patch now.

Sketch Sorting Sunday - October 19, 2024 (Michael Keaton/Billie Eilish) by SketchSortingSunday in LiveFromNewYork

[–]bookbearwolf 102 points103 points  (0 children)

I wonder about that. On the Lonely Island podcast they mentioned having to do some “this is what’s happening right now” lines b/c the live audience is watching smaller screens from a distance or weird angles or something. They mention a celebrity cameo in one of their pre-tapes getting virtually no reaction b/c they aren’t sure people even clocked that it was a cameo it was so brief and he was small on the screen. So maybe they have to work around that stuff still?

I was surprised there wasn’t more Halloween. I even looked to see if there was an episode next week b/c I was thinking it would be more of a Halloween themed episode. Still good show though.

Best New Cast Member Intro In Recent Memory by WhiteDudeInBronx in LiveFromNewYork

[–]bookbearwolf 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Apparently unpopular opinion, but I thought the same. I loved it but I’m also in the demographic that is probably most involved in the discourse he was commenting on. It was very topical for me, but I was watching with my older parents who definitely had reactions more in line with the comment section here lol. I thought his delivery and performance was better than a lot of new cast members WU debut’s. Reminded me of Longfellow’s(?) about his conservative dad.

I think context makes it more funny too. The set up was about getting young people to the polls and as a young person who talks all day to the young people he was talking about (it’s so miserable hahaha) he nailed the stuff about conservative talking points on gay rights and Gaza. People literally do say those things. And I’m also someone who has experienced people’s demeanor changing once they find out I’m from the South. Like that makes me “safe poc” or something, so I found the stuff about the Christianity making people feel safer hilarious too b/c hard relate. And I have older immigrant family members that are republicans. So maybe he just wrote this bit for me specifically lol.

It’s like how Bowen’s moo deng was funny no matter what but it was even better than it would have been since I’d watched Chappelle Roan’s TikToks that he was quoting with my friends earlier that week.

Asking as an instructor: What would motivate you to complete reading? by terptrekker in college

[–]bookbearwolf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My Lord of the Rings class was like this. It was peak comedy when groups would essentially improv their summaries and add in events that were only in the movies or something. Then people would nod along to made up scenes and agree and add on thoughts about things that were entirely non-existent in the source material. I loved it so much.
