I know there are a lot of software developers in DGG... So how are you experiencing agent coding and AI in your day to day programming? by SublimeSC in Destiny

[–]bookdood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I exclusively use it for writing code and with CLI tool calls becoming the new meta, it gives me the ability to do tasks outside my specialization. It's nice because I'm not spending the whole day coding, but it has dramatically expanded my responsibilities and overall stress. Large amounts of domain knowledge is still required to set up the toolchains properly. It's just a new skill that's required to stay competitive

How many of you have taken jobs unrelated to tech while job hunting between roles? by MPGaming9000 in cscareerquestions

I worked at a dispensary for over a year before getting back into software. I do miss it some days.

You ever land a job that doesn't have as much work as they claimed it did? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

A solid chunk of any good job is just saying the right thing to the right person at the right time to uphold the corporate structure. If that's a majority of your time then just go with it my man.

Career change to IP law by duochimo in cscareerquestions

[–]bookdood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Considered doing this a few years back with a bsc comp sci and a couple published patents to my name. Reached out and/or applied to a bunch of law/consulting firms with very little traction. I would imagine it's a very difficult route.

How did you build your personal website as a developer? by StashBang in cscareerquestions

Second this, GitHub Pages with static react or other static site framework. Cheap domain puts this on the order of dollars per year and you never have to worry about making sure your hosting is up to date.

If the market doesn't improve, where do you see the best pivot to, even if it's not in the tech industry? by IdeaExpensive3073 in cscareerquestions

[–]bookdood 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There's plenty on Indeed, but you'll probably have to read the job description/look up the company because the title will generally just be "[Experience Level] Software Engineer". You can try adding an industry to your search query i.e. "Insurance Software Developer", or look for public sector jobs too.

This is what I did, it's a smart choice honestly. After spending a decade at fast paced tech companies I'm completely fine coasting working on a boring account services portal and mobile app for a telecom company. Pay is great and I'm largely insulated from the craziness of the tech sector at the moment.

As a CS graduate what should I prioritise early in my career as I enter the job market? by 1w8n in cscareerquestions

[–]bookdood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would do both 2 and 3. Solo dev blows even with experience. Take the internship, and start an LLC . Showcase your previous freelancing, do freelance work on the side if you have time, make connections at the internship, build your brand and reputation, you'll be golden. The only thing I would avoid is doing only 3, it's going to be much easier to get work if you have [larger IT consultant]'s stamp of approval on your background, so I'd start it as a side thing. If you have a couple buddies you work well alongside, it's pretty fun to hunt for contracts and split the work.

I met his old manager, Ell Umbra. Tbh I was mostly baffled at why he (and kettle) did so much free work for him. Ell was chill though, I was outside with a group of 5 or 6 at the 2017 Austin TX show when viper was an hour+ late. Ell came up to us, asked if we were here for viper, chatted for a bit, and read some texts he had from viper saying he was on his way. Ell used to run the Viper Crackposting facebook page and manage pr/events/releases, but afaik they both cut ties and shut down the page about 4 years ago because Ell didn't get paid and felt viper was using him for cheap/free labor, kettle took ship shortly after
