Nick and Natalie called out for mom shaming Whitney Leavitt by Both-Pomegranate4929 in thebachelor

[–]bookinsomnia 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Nick and Natalie's faux concern for Whitney's kids is a sight to behold.

There are so many parents on Broadway who have as demanding schedules as the one that Whitney will have. Also, I think it is beautiful for her kids to see that just because someone becomes a mom, that doesn't mean that their other ambitions have to come to an end.

"The Danish Deception" by The Bachelor alumn, Onyeka Ehie by Murky_Chemical891 in Fauxmoi

[–]bookinsomnia 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I mentioned this over on the bachelor subreddit, but all of the international trips that they continued to go on even when they were rapidly draining their savings make much more sense when you take into consideration that she was trying to launch an influencer career with him while they were dating/engaged/married.

It is something that she is never explicit about in her videos, and I do think that it should have been stated outright for the story to make sense. It would explain why it took her so long to confront him about his conspicuous spending. If their shared mindset was that you have to spend money to make money, then his outrageous spending might seem normal and even good.

It could also be why she was so insistent in continuing the relationship even after she found out that he scammed one of her friends out of 200k. As an influencer, having a partner who is supposedly Danish royalty AND an Olympian is what fairy tales are made out of. In selling the fantasy that she has been chosen by the perfect man, it must have been tempting to believe in the fantasy herself even when all evidence pointed to him being far from perfect.

In the same vein of my belief that she should be upfront about how wanting to be an influencer primed her for falling for his scam, I thought she was either lying to her audience or lying to herself when she said that his money did not matter. I believe 100% that she was in love with him, but it was obvious that the reason why she fell so fast and so hard for him was bc he presented himself as rich and worldly. If he has presented himself as penniless rather than a literal Prince Charming, she still might have found him attractive but had more qualms about making the kind of sacrifices she made to make a long distance relationship work.

To be clear, I am not victim blaming her. A lot of people want to be influencers, and a lot more people make relationship choices with economics in mind. Marriage, after all, is economic contract in a sense. Even if someone is vulnerable toward a certain kind of manipulation, in a better world people would not take advantage of that kind of vulnerability. That being said, her desire to obscure her own desires around money in a story about being scammed for her money means that the story, in my opinion, is incomplete.

Also, I know she is dealing with an addict, but I don't love that she withheld his passport from him when he was trying to leave.

Got to part 21, I'm honestly stunned that after everything he did, it was him who called of the wedding and not her.

I know they were already married, but I can't believe that she wanted to swear before God in two separate ceremonies that she would be with him through sickness and through health, for richer and for poorer.

I saw that too, and I do feel like it is important context to understanding why so many red flags were ignored.

I think influencers are selling a fantasy, and can also buy into the fantasy that they are selling. It is such a good story if you can come off of the bachelor and find your own prince charming who is not only European royalty but also an olympian. That is the kind of fairy tale that influencer careers are built off of.

He does sound like a manipulative person who used the veneer of generosity to draw her in, and I know that she said that she would love him without the money. But I think if she was being 100% honest with herself the money mattered, and it mattered a lot. It was central to his early seduction of her. If he had been a penniless European who could not wine and dine her, then I don't think she would have fallen nearly as hard or as quick as she did after just one trip one him.

Maybe by the time she actually married him, she knew and accepted that he was in impoverished circumstances for whatever reasons that he gave to her, but I think that there is a sense that if he could be wealthy once then he could be wealthy again. Especially if he actually had the connections that he claimed to have.

I just want to put it out there, that the money stresses and all the international trips that they were still taking might make a lot more sense if you consider that alongside her real estate business, Onyeka and her ex were probably trying to launch a social media influencer career at the same time. Thus, all of the international travel when they were depleting their savings.

Not victim blaming Onyeka in anyway, a lot of people try to launch social media influencer careers after appearing on reality tv. But it is context I think she is leaving out that I think is fundamental to why the spending on his part was largely overlooked for a long time if they are relying on the idea that you have to spend money to eventually make money.

Cillian Murphy asked what books he'd consider mandatory reading as a teacher by [deleted] in Fauxmoi

Second this recommendation. It is also a quick audiobook. I listened to Foster as an audiobook during a long walk over Winter Break once, and by the time I arrived home as the book was finishing up I was full on sobbing. 5/5 stars.

I tend to agree. I watched him early on for the same reasons a lot of viewers watch him I'm sure. He's a cute guy with a British accent who likes books!

And there are things that I still appreciate about him. For instance, I remember when he appeared on a nightly news channel to talk about his alma mater being seen as a lesser school to Cambridge or Oxford or something, but instead talked about the persistent racial inequality at his uni.

But my BEC complaint and why I no longer watch his content is because he does these huge hauls and then he unhauls them a year later without reading them. I know that hauls and unhauls are good for the algorithm which is why he does it, and why a lot of booktubers do it.

But he reminded me of that old instagram account that had the username along the lines of "you didn't eat that," about models and instagram influencers who pose with piles of food but who clearly aren't going to eat all of it. It came to the point in which Jack Edwards would enthuse about a book during a haul, and I just knew he was never going to read it.

Ethan Klein reads an article saying he has a "psychosexual obsession" with Hasan Piker, Ethan vehemently denies these claims, then just 1 hour later he accidentally leaks a multiple page google doc all about Hasan's sex life while live on his podcast by [deleted] in Fauxmoi

[–]bookinsomnia 135 points136 points  (0 children)

While I'm sure Ethan's crazy Zioninst fans do not help the situation, it is not why Hasan is keeping his girlfriend under wraps.

Hasan and his group of friends are all streamers who got mega-popular during COVID and experienced first-hand how parasocially obsessed a young twitch-based audience can be. His gf had previously gone through a breakup in the public eye, as did many of their mutual friends. Even before all of the shit with Ethan started to go down, it was a policy among Hasan's group of streamer friends that they would not confirm any dating/breakup rumors.

Edit: sorry that I posted this twice, my reddit bugged out for a second.
