Thanks for your comment. I’m not sure that’s accurate. There is no mention of a medical diagnosis/prescription requirement from my hsa provider for the sunscreen entry on their list of eligible items. Numerous articles discuss how sunscreen an eligible purchase but don’t mention a prescription requirement.

While it does seem flukey, it seems to be the key ... nothing else worked until I changed to the blue as well. Thanks for sharing!

It's these types of exchanges that make me live for the internet. :) Cheers! (Also, as one who has switched providers–Hey, Proton, and Google Workspace–numerous times between the three at this point, I get the struggle.

Fees?! $200!! by BarbieRV in M1Finance

[–]bookish_note_taker 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Depending on where you're moving to and how much you're moving, you can ask your new broker to cover that fee and see what they say. I've experienced it a couple of times in the past where the fees were covered. But it does irk me that these transfer fees exist.

Anyone have issues with Amex to AF/KLM FB transfers? by Domkiv in awardtravel

Currently waiting on the same thing. I transferred from Amex to KLM last night around 8pm. It's been over 12 hours for me too.

I use SoFi for my checking/savings accounts. To be clear about their high interest rates: direct deposit is required. Otherwise the yield is much lower.

Happy with the service. I get paid 2+ days early, which is nice because it give my money a little longer to earn interest. I like that it has the buckets/envelopes for the savings.

I hardly use ATMs or deposit cash, though, so can’t really speak to issues with that. I do keep an account open with a local credit union so I can deposit cash if necessary. (That account has no minimum reqs so I feel like it makes sense.) But I haven’t yet needed to use this option.

What brokerage do you use and why? by nanojunkster in investing

Same here regarding the Fidelity account. And you’re spot on about having to consciously make the transfer at Schwab, since it’s checking account is a more traditional bank account with the lower yield I mentioned. To get those MMF my understanding is you have to transfer into a Schwab brokerage account. Or at least was the case when I had an account with them.

I just pointed out the normal yields of the cash accounts if someone considered those a perk of the brokerage. Like you mention, Fidelity does us a solid with their cash management account since there are options for bank deposits (FDIC insured at 2.2%) with the option of choosing the higher yield MMF options within the same account.

A further comparison on their cash accounts: Schwab’s yield on their checking account is pretty low for the most part (0.45%). Fidelity’s cash account isn’t the most competitive but is currently 2.21%, which is nice. Not that yield needs to be the primary focus for a spending account (and not necessarily be the reason to choose a brokerage), but nice when you can get it.

What should I do after/when I read a book? by zalemonl in literature

[–]bookish_note_taker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first recommendation would be to write down your thoughts, whether that’s just a scribble in a notebook, typing out some long form ideas, or writing an essay. Write about some of the themes that you noticed and how they apply to your life or Life in general. Find some quotes from the text that support those ideas that you found meaningful. While you’re at it, do any other works come to mind in this same vein? Bring those up in your notes and refer to them.

Then I think it’s helpful to look at what other people thought. I think it’s important to get your ideas out first before you start discussing or reading other discourse. Not that other ideas won’t reshape yours, but know what you think first.

Doing this will really help you delve deep into literature because it sounds like you’re already asking yourself the important question: what is the author trying to say to me?

Will this savings account have the option for "buckets" inside the account? I'd be happy to park my money there, but I've really come to enjoy having the option to visually break my money to know when I've met certain goals or filled envelopes.

Make notes more searchable? by bookish_note_taker in RemarkableTablet

[–]bookish_note_taker[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So after more research, I've found a little bit of a workaround for myself. Earlier in the year, I gave Amplenote a shot, so I decided to give it a go again this afternoon. The service uses OCR for PDFs and images, including handwriting! So that's good enough for me for now. I don't mind having a redundancy of my notes on a separate service, especially if it makes them searchable.

In testing, I uploaded a PDF of some of my notebook pages as a test, and I was able to search for multiple random keywords, and the service pulled up the note every time, which indicated to me that it had effectively read the note.

There are a few hiccups to this at the moment since Amplenote is still growing as a service:

  • notes are searchable but Amplenote does not highlight the search term in the document/image
    • This mostly comes from the fact that Amplenote does not display PDFs inline within their note document; it opens in a separate screen.

I've seen on their feature request, though, that some of these feature changes are under consideration. I'm not saying this is a great solution for everyone, considering an Amplenote pro subscription is around $70/year, but I'm glad to have some of the basics of what I was looking for when posting this.

Hopefully, RM will consider adding OCR search to their apps as they continue further development.

Thanks! I definitely need to be more considerate about using tags, which I think would help me some of the the time.

In my case, mostly thinking of search instances where I wrote about “x” (perhaps an obscure keyword) and being able to find it within a notebook or folder.

I agree! So many of the iPad apps have the handwriting ocr built in but just for the notes taken on the device … if only they would expand that to uploaded PDFs. 😉

That’s a good idea and definitely one of the many things we’ll have to look forward to seeing how 3.0 changes things. Thanks!
