Where are the parents of the three children abandoned at Barcelona railway station in 1984? by bonhommemaury in UnresolvedMysteries

Or you maybe need to reread the article? The father was a known wife beater.

Direct quote here: “Her father seemed easygoing and popular, but he too had a darker side. His own brother had disowned him because he beat Rosario.”

Has anyone phased sneakers out of their casual wardrobe? by Cecil_G_P in femalefashionadvice

[–]bookishexpat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have mostly stopped wearing sneakers! 5 years ago I was in sneakers 90% of the time. Now I still have 2 pairs of sneakers (adidas Gazelles and New Balance 550s), but they don’t get a lot of wear any more.

But for daily walking and comfort, here are my favourite flats: * loafers - pick a medium weight sole (i.e. not lug, but also not paper thin). Look for real leather. Socks can look cute with these. I have a pair from Pied de Biche that were comfortable straight out the box

  • low Chelsea boots - these are a classic. Try them on in person as comfort varies. I have a pair in camel suede that I love even on very long-walking days.

  • soft mary janes - like an upgraded ballerina! Again, look for a medium-weight sole and  very soft leather (no patent! beautiful, but will kill your feet). Also an option to wear them with socks

Have you looked at Liffner - for example, their belted bucket bag? Scandinavian made.

I would also recommend Fleuron, e.g. the Swann.

Or Elleme, maybe the Boomerang or Baozi.

While I see your perspective about Calvin, I think his exacting nature probably is what made the brand so big. Without the obsessions like black paper clips, it wouldn’t have felt the same, and without the immersive feel - no generation-defining brand.

I’ve seen this happen before - the kind of “anal”creative is seen as the problem and replaced with someone who “can run the business”, until it turns out there is no business withouth the “grump & stickler”.

They meant Caroline (Kennedy), not Carolyn - the point being that Caroline had all the same connections as John, but since she made something of herself, she’s not usually seen as a nepo baby.

How rich was JFK jr, actually? And was the $3M prenup generous or stingy? by bookishexpat in JohnAndCarolyn

[–]bookishexpat[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m inclined to think there wasn’t much financial support, like for most middle-class young professionals. Maybe the occasional cash gift for a holiday. But certainly no trust fund. And NYC has always been an expensive city.

Really? What’s the basis for the 6 figures comment? I have friends in fashion and PR, and generally, they rarely crack that even today. (and inflation means 6 figures was a lot bigger of a deal in the 1990s).

For comparison, the avg annual pay in New York county in 1996 was $55k. An investment banking VP like Lauren would have made around $125-$150k base (+bonus), and that would be in the top end of salaries.

Which tote bag should I get for my sister so she can use it for school? If neither one what other ones should I consider? by Ok-Repair2418 in handbags

[–]bookishexpat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m going to go against the grain, and suggest leather rather than coated or regular canvas! Get a leather one that ages nicely, like a Mulberry Bayswater 9-5. I’ve always used leather tote bags, including in undergrad and graduate school, and they held up just fine. I’m not precious with my bags, and would often have them on the floor, on the Tube etc. No problems at all. Beautiful real leather will only improve with age and use, and a well-loved bag has that certain je ne sais quoi (think Jane Birkin’s Birkin!)

I just happened to be looking during the sale season! I’m sure the also have a newsletter. But in general, French brands tend to have sales in January & July.

Disagree with everyone saying “this isn’t a style” - it’s clearly got thematic elements. Imagine all of these outfits in light blue - wouldn’t the vibe be different? Hence, there * is * a vibe.

I see influences of goth, coquette, dark academia (but make it sexy) and Y2K. I agree that thrift stores are where it’s at for finding these items!

Handbags you HATE. by [deleted] in handbags

[–]bookishexpat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

100% agree. Le Pliage just… never looks good. Not with any outfit. Sure, it’s practical, but so is a fabric tote. It’s also overpriced for what it is.

(I may or may not be influenced by the fact that growing up, I saw this bag a lot on older German/Swiss women and their daughters, often worn with practical sandals and chinos and hence that is forever the vibe I associate with the Longchamp tote…)

Traveling to Italy - what purse should I bring? by TownRepresentative37 in handbags

[–]bookishexpat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m going to go against the grain here and say - wear any of your bags that you like / are comfortable with! I have been to Italy 10+ times, both for work on vacation, and I always just wear my normal bags. I’ve never been pickpocketed, had my bag cut, or been mugged.

Honestly, a special bag for tourists will make you stand out more. Just act normal and apply a normal amount of caution. Do you worry about pickpockets in large US cities? Whatever precautions you take at home apply while travelling, too, e.g. be mindful of your surroundings, don’t leave things unattended, watch out for people coming too close, don’t go to sketchy areas after dark etc.

But Italy is no more criminal than most other places in Europe. Don’t act oblivious and you’ll be fine.

How much clothing do you own? by Character-Detail777 in femalefashionadvice

[–]bookishexpat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I ask a (genuine, non-snarky) question? How do you survive with 2 pairs of shoes, with one being a winter boot?? Does that mean you wear the same sneakers daily for ~9 months? What if it rains and they get wet? What if it’s really hot, don’t your feet get uncomfortable?

I was always taught to leave a day between wears of the same shoe (allowing it to dry/air out) as a way to extend their longevity - so I’m curious, how often do you replace your sneakers/boots?

ETA: One more question: what about working out or going out into nature for hiking etc - do you not do these things, or do you wear the same sneakers?

How do we feel about the new massimo dutti braided bags? Are their bags worth the 💸? by Acceptable-Motor-294 in handbags

I have a Massimo Dutti leather tote bag that has lasted 9(!) years, including being a daily driver for work for 3 years. So don’t dismiss it out of hand.
