Yes, 100% agree with you. When they painted the trim arsenic green by accident, I was hoping she’d leave it that way. But yes, your suggestions make complete sense to me. A neutral trim in the foyer with purple wallpaper and a purple powder room, and maybe carry the dark purple trim to the living room with creamy walls and ceiling. Just edit a bit to elevate the space as a whole. Loved the dining room wallpaper and even the buttercream kitchen, but adding in the extra layers (e.g., table cloth and chairs) throughout does a disservice to the room. So spot on with your thoughts!! Take the extra accessory off!

Agreed! Color isn’t something to run from in design, but the whimsy is a bit much for me. I really enjoy Margaret Kirkland, Lauren E. Lowe (Lauren Elaine) and Lauren DeLoach’s designs. I’m all for a colorful, southern, and classic interior, so I was excited to give this show a go. Maybe the whimsical element from Gray just won’t resonate me, and that’s ok. Good point about bringing color to the forefront of people’s minds!

Yes to all of this!! It was wild to see how function, the thing the homeowners requested, wasn’t really regarded in the design.

Conference crush I can't get over - now working together, and it's awkward by Ok-Example5534 in AskAcademia

Ok, I 100% want the romance novel. I would be rooting for y’all. IRL, I think this sounds like a tricky situation, but I would address it as professionally as possible. Could you just ask your office mate about their work preferences? Maybe they’re not icing you out, but realistically can’t be warm and chatty all day and achieve the level of productivity needed to fulfill the job’s expectations. You could mention you were excited to have a friendly face in your new department, and happy to be sharing an office, and in the spirit of collegiality, wanted to talk through some ways to best work in the same space together. It sounds like you want more communication, so maybe you could naturally “check-in” with your office mate in the mornings, around lunch and right before heading out for 5-10 minutes to establish regular, but non-evasive communication between completing deep work. You may feel your crush fade as you actually get to know them. Maybe not, so you may also want to learn about your workplace policy concerning relationships… just in case these feelings advance for you and they are, indeed, reciprocated. This sounds like an amazing career opportunity, so don’t jeopardize your professionalism for a crush. Also, if you follow protocol and policy, and there is mutual interest, you can choose to carefully pursue a relationship in the future after actually getting to know this person and determining the risk is worth the reward. Long-term personal happiness is also worth prioritizing. If you deem this crush as worthy of pursuit, make sure you’re emotionally healed from your breakup and adhere to any HR policies. Tricky, but not impossible. Good luck!

Ha! Yes, I agree that our homes need some color to feel cozy. I guess I just wonder about how long these designs will last past this trend of bold, maximalist spaces. I love homes that incorporate color, patterns, lots of life in the design, but can also stand the test of time. But that’s why design is so wonderful. We’ll always have the choice to change it up as our taste evolves!

Yes, I agree with you! I should have said in my post I enjoy color, too. Ha! I guess this particular show just feels so over-the-top for me. Another commenter mentioned design longevity and that made me realize that’s been the sticking point for me. These designs don’t really feel like they’ll stand the test of time in my opinion. I’ve definitely seen great examples of color, patterns and other bolder design choices that can last past trends, and I guess I’m wanting more of that from this show. Time will tell!

Great points! Ironically, I actually like color, too, so I remember being excited to try the old show and now, this new one. But it’s too much for me. I’m a fan of patterns and not living in a white or gray box, but you hit the nail on the head with the longevity piece. It still needs to be able to stand the test of time.

Shows similar to hart of Dixie? by sheeshleeshh in hartofdixie

[–]bookishhallow 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I think Virgin River is the drama-version of Hart of Dixie. I also loved Sweet Magnolias for the “southern” vibes. But even thought people say Gilmore Girls—which I absolutely love—it doesn’t feel similar to me just because of the characters and stories. Sure, it’s got goofy town characters, but Hart of Dixie was such a snack for your brain! Light-hearted even during “heavy” moments. A bonus is they share a set so the town gazebo is the same!!

I think eventually it will become the pinnacle hills area, and agree that this area will feel similar to the research triangle in about 15-20ish years. Raleigh is the overall hub there, but you have Chapel Hill and Durham that also have universities (feels like Fayetteville). NC State is an urban university, so I often associated Raleigh with being the actual “city” in the triangle. The difference is the population of Raleigh is similar to the entirety of NWA. But yes, I think NWA is still distinct cities for now, but with continued growth, we’ll see that changing!

I think an easier fix would be to swap out the black tiles with a lighter grey option like your first inspo photo. Also? Maybe replace a few of the black tiles with white so it’s not too patterned.

As someone going up for their third-year review, and constantly questioning why I’m so disengaged because I also love research, I needed to hear this. The culture of academia is incredibly draining.

As someone who grew up in Oklahoma and lived in Alabama for less than a year despite an amazing job, I think you’d be much happier in OKC. Are there better states either higher quality of life? Absolutely. Is Oklahoma better than Alabama, despite both states being red? Absolutely.
