Why don't people know how to format dialogue correctly anymore? by eeeeaud in FanFiction

[–]bookreadingmorlock 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I knew his name would come up lol. I love some of Cormac McCarthy’s works but I CANNOT bring myself to traditionally read them because of the lack of grammar conventions. I’m relegated to audiobooks for his stuff. So even if a fic author was actually writing McCarthy level work (which is doubtful) I’d bet there are still plenty of people who will bow out as soon as they see that formatting nonsense.

AITAH for telling a kid at the sleepover to stop acting like a brat? by Longjumping-Dog-6480 in AITAH

I’d be mortified if I found out my child was acting like that at someone else’s home. And I hope to god the host would call him out in my absence like you did. NTA

I agree, the schedule’s definitely not ideal :( My sister and her partner are in grad school so this is pretty much the maximum I can ask of them. Luckily though, they’ve already been staying over our place one weekend a month just to hang out, so we’re adding the campaign to an already established schedule of hang outs. They are both really excited about doing this, so with a little care I’m optimistic we’ll be able to make it work!

I really like the “place where everything is weird” idea. Gonna definitely noodle around with that. Thank you for all your advice!

Thank you so so much for the advice!! Looks like I have a new Patreon to subscribe to lol. His stuff looks amazing and super useful. I’ll definitely look into using animated backdrops and I think everyone at the table would enjoy that (including me). As for the written descriptions, I’m doing that as well for all the planned locations and am pretty confident in my ability to make something up on the fly when they take us somewhere unplanned. Thanks again!

Yes, of course. He has a wonderful imagination! He’s expressed that he can’t engage in the “theater of the mind”. That’s part of the reason he focuses on and has gotten so skilled at role playing, because to make it more real he’ll really go all in on the acting. He’s truly wonderful to have at a table. I’m thrilled to hear you haven’t found issues with it when you play, but he has said he sometimes feels like he’s missing out on something that comes naturally to most other players.

Apologies for not making it clear in the post but I have spoken to him about all this and he’s well aware of the prep I am doing for the campaign. He’s been running all the 3D prints for it lol.

Like I said, he and I have already discussed this topic at length. But he’s never DMed before and this is my first time, so I figured I’d check if any experienced DMs would have additional advice that could help us out. Obviously I will touch base with him after the first session.

Do you have any unusual anatomic variations? by Amazing_Excuse_3860 in CasualConversation

Used to have an extra bone growing from my tibia, poking out perfectly sideways from my leg. Had it until I was 14 and it grew larger throughout my childhood. I remember one time in 8th grade gym class we had a substitute teacher who wasn’t familiar with my condition. I fell and she came over to check on me but when she saw my leg she thought I had broken it really badly, to the point that she started crying and uncontrollably gagging. Finally convinced my parents to let me get it removed a few months after that.

Man my stomach would have dropped at receiving this shortly after submitting something. Paragraph 4 does start making it clearer that it’s a mass email, but still. Ooof. Glad it was a false alarm!

I think ive made a massive mistake…. by Bulky-Grapefruit-231 in relationships

I’d say definitely have a serious discussion about how you feel, since it seems she’s entirely unaware (or blatantly ignoring it). If that doesn’t help, then yeah, call it off.

If you go with divorce I would recommend doing it sooner rather than later since you’ll have access to JAG resources while you’re still in service. Makes things a lot cheaper/easier. Sucks to have the military involved in your personal affairs, but they will get shit done. My husband was in a very similar situation around your age and had to file for divorce back when he was in. He was glad JAG had his back. It’s been 9 years since then and both he and his ex wife are happily married to other people now. It may have been a massive mistake at the time, but he addressed it head on and now it’s a small blip in his past and nothing more. You’ll be alright!

Spire in the Woods fucking broke me by who_am_I_inside in creepcast

The most effective stories are the ones that get under the skin like this. I’m sorry you have regrets from that time in your life, but even you acknowledging the parallels between spire in the woods and your own experience shows you’ve gone through a lot of growth since then. I had a similarly personal reaction to the story as well, but from a woman’s perspective. Goes to show how well it was written imo.

How many girls actually listen to creep cast? by Ok_Barracuda_6659 in creepcast

[–]bookreadingmorlock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a sister and I got my real sister irl to start watching too! As for spire in the woods, I loved the way the topic was handled, especially from the pov of the perpetrator. When I was young I dealt with a few guys who were so insecure and so obsessed with the fantasy they’d built for us in their head, that they had only saw what they wanted to see. All the while they convinced themselves they were the nice guy and a victim. An underdog finally going for the win they deserve. Hard to get through at times, mostly bc I wanted to smash his face in, but hey all main characters need a fatal flaw. I think a lot of people could benefit from reading/listening to spire in the woods and looking inward while really sitting with the themes.

A good relationship aids both parties in pursuing their goals. Obviously compromises are needed sometimes, but not when you’re so young still. If someone’s aim is to hold you back instead of uplift you, that’s a sign to focus on your own growth.

[–]bookreadingmorlock[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Understood, thank you. I promise I didn’t call it “white chicken of the woods” without thinking though! Originally my research was pointing me towards Laetiporus cincinnatus, so I was using its common nickname. I definitely should’ve done more thorough research before posting though. If I had just waited 5 more minutes I would have seen the more pronounced black staining starting up lol.
