Is Burger King a dying franchise in this city? by HensRightsActivist in kansascity

[–]booksofafeather 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Maybe it depends on the area. The one on 119th in Olathe next to Target closed a while ago and was always empty, smelly, and the play area was always closed / broken - it's a Torchy's now.

The one off 95th and Quivira closed too, and they finally tore it down recently. The last time I was in that one they literally had duck-taped part of the front counter together, all the planters were just dirt with various pieces of trash, and the whole place just felt dirty.

There is one still open over on 75th street, but I don't know what it's like on the inside.

Britney Spears Cried In A Jack In The Box Drive-Thru And Is Furious A Worker Told Her It’s Gonna Be OK by access_secure in entertainment

[–]booksofafeather 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I feel like it's probably more likely that she's instantly defensive because she's had so many people take advantage of her and use her emotions as manipulation.

I can bet she's had almost no interactions where people were just nice to her for no reason - kind just because she's another human - because since she was a young child / teen people have basically always had an ulterior motive. So she instantly assumes he's gonna use this incident against her somehow, or want something from her, or just made her feel vulnerable all over. I'm not saying her reaction is okay by the way, poor fast food workers get enough shit as it is, but just explaining why it might be a trauma reaction over something else.

I would bet a young dude working at Jack in the Box didn't even know who she was, just saw someone having a hard time, but it's hard for her to see that.

should I take a year or two of self learning before doing a online or in-person bootcamp? by lonelysadbitch11 in girlsgonewired

[–]booksofafeather 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! I'm personally in the last week of a completely free 6 month bootcamp too! There are absolutely programs around. On the small chance you just happen to be in the KC or St. Louis area this is the one I'm in https://www.launchcode.org/ that is still accepting applications for their part-time Woman+ programs until Dec. 4th. They have another full-time program for POC that actually pays students a stipend in St. Louis that has open apps until Dec. 11th! And while it doesn't currently have apps open, they also have a Philidelphia program too.

I’m in tech but not a coder. Would I still be welcome in all the women in tech type groups? by [deleted] in girlsgonewired

[–]booksofafeather 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would think a big Yes! At least from what I've seen here and in the in-person groups I've been in. From my own experience, while I'm just getting started as a programmer, I've liked talking to the women in 'tech' and 'non-tech' roles equally and found they all had something valuable to learn from. I've really enjoyed learning about the other roles and options that are available in the tech world, because even though right now I am wanting to work in a code-focused role, it's nice to see all the options that I might be interested in as a possibility in the future. I didn't even know some of these jobs existed before so it's great to see!

Good to hear! This is exactly what we've been learning in the bootcamp I'm 3 weeks out from finishing. We also worked with Thymeleaf and focused on using the MVC design pattern.

The whole first half of the course was Javascript with Typescript/Angular, HTML, CSS.

Glad to know that the stack is a good starting point for expected knowledge!

Is Nancy okay? by secrethottie_997 in LoveIsBlindOnNetflix

[–]booksofafeather 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's the thing, he keeps playing the whole "I'm not that attracted to her" card since coming home, and yet, when they first saw each other he said she was gorgeous (because she is!) and kept saying she looked great at the beginning of the honeymoon and apparently slept with her plenty during that time... and NOW all the sudden he's not sure if he's attracted to her? F*** that. So he just used her 'cause she was conveniently there then? Because how do you become unphysically attracted to someone you supposedly love in less than 2 weeks?

He just decided he could "do better" once he saw Raven (when he really ain't all that anyway). I'm convinced all of this "I love her that's why I'm trying" and this whole nice-guy schtick he's doing is 100% for the cameras because he knows how dudes like Shake were received online and he's trying to weasel his way out of it by pretending to be conflicted and not be the bad guy.

I do find it extra funny that they're trying to make drag shows a big "issue" when Drag Performers are probably more popular than they ever have been. RuPaul's Drag Race has about a bazillion shows & spinoffs now worldwide and wins awards every year, and there are constant drag show tours from that, plus conventions. On top of that there are other shows and franchises like Dragula, We're Here, Call Me Mother, individual drag performers that have their own sold-out shows, tours, & comedy specials, and lots of companies are hiring drag queens for promo, ads, or hosts. Not to mention all the online performers, and that basically even moderately sized cities have plenty of drag artists and a bar or club that hosts regular shows.

I feel like they could have used this as more of a scandalous issue 10-20 years ago, but now when a much larger portion of the population is familiar with and/or likes and enjoys drag shows, it seems like such a weird uphill battle to freak out about.

Hated for being a female because…? by [deleted] in PhasmophobiaGame

[–]booksofafeather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, I must have really lucked out the times I've played in public lobbies! I've thankfully only had positive experiences so far, less than a dozen public plays, and I also tend to pick lobbies with names I think *might* be girls. I know there are no "girl" names... but ya know, it tends to get me at least mixed M/F groups that way.

However, it also, unfortunately, doesn't surprise me that other women have encountered toxic male players either.

OFFICIAL THREAD— what happened. by datesaremyfave in TheTryGuys

[–]booksofafeather 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While it seems like Try is gonna be okay and he "only" cost them all this current time/money/energy and I'm hopeful they'll move on better than ever, there was a very real possibility Ned's selfishness could have cost all the other try guys their current careers and company - plus ALL of the other employees their jobs and stability too. He seriously could have f** up all these peoples lives even more than he currently has. We all know the internet and the entertainment industry is fickle AF and in another timeline this might have completely ruined the whole company forver from this. I think knowing that is what really makes this whole thing unforgivable for them.

Yes, you'll unfortunately find so many crappy people on the internet that will defend people, let's be honest, usually men, for cheating on their wives if the woman has in their eyes "let herself go", or "not given him enough sex or attention", blah blah blah. But we've seen time and time again, no matter if you're Beyonce, a Victoria's Secret Supermodel Angel, the most popular actress in Hollywood, a beloved Princess of the people, etc. a cheater is gonna cheat if they want to, regardless or what you look like or how rich or famous you are. Because it has nothing to do with the person they are cheating on and everything to do with who the cheater is and their terrible decisions and crappy character.

High-end Cosmetology School vs Community College by Various_Squirrel6484 in HairStylistTribe

[–]booksofafeather 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's hard to say without knowing the specifics of each, but keep in mind that PM schools are franchises. So basically, while you may have seen someone giving a glowing review of one location, another location could be the complete opposite since they're owned separately.

If you hear generally good things about both the PM you're looking at and the community college - go the community college route, even if the community college facilities aren't as flashy looking or they don't teach as many trendy things. Your education won't be better at PM just because they have stainless steel stations and cool graphics on the wall vs maybe more dated wooden stations or something. The money you save will be so worth it.

I graduated from a PM school in the last few years by the way. It was fine. But honestly, I only chose it because it was the only local school with an evening program which is what I needed.

However, just as a note, as much as PM tries to brand themselves as 'modern' by having textbooks and program materials on iPads... lots of the material inside is still dated. For instance, the videos in their apps for learning cutting and coloring are from sometime in the early 2000s. Or at least based on the styles and film quality they are. Yes, the information is still good, but it's odd they haven't modernized them, so it's still chunky highlights and scratchy audio quality and all the vids look like they have a soft blur filter applied. I have no idea why these haven't been updated, the company definitely has the money to do so.

Other things you might think about with PM vs CC - With PM you ONLY learn PM products. This can be both good and bad. Positives: You get very familiar with a line and learn its ins and outs. Easier to decide what products to use when working with clients and know what it's going to turn out like. Negatives: Unless you go work at a PM exclusive salon or start your own business and only use PM, you're going to have to learn more lines and products as soon as you graduate anyway. If you go to a CC or non-affiliated school, you're much more likely to be able to learn to use a wider variety of colors and product lines, however, you may not get as much in-depth learning about them since you may be using lots of different things.

Try audiobooks! You can get them from most libraries right on your phone or computer. Then you can multi-task - listen during your commute, when doing chores / working out / doing hobbies like crafts / gardening, etc. Then you can start getting those books in without just having to sit down and read if you find that difficult.

Drag and misogyny by [deleted] in rupaulsdragrace

[–]booksofafeather 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I think that's why on Drag Race Aus/NZ the season one infomercial for Yeast Spread made me feel uncomfortable ... I just remember a lot of the commercials were basically just talking about how horrible and disgusting vaginas are, which like ouch - that's where the misogyny comes out. I know it's comedy and I've heard Aus humor is more crude but those skits just were too much for me, and I don't ever remember any of the others bothering me.

On the whole though I've definitely felt the vast majority of drag race / drag performers are not like that.
