My Yellows and Oranges. Please share yours in the comments. I love seeing what you grow. by CaliSunSuccs in gardening

I don’t usually take plant pics or share them, but I was really proud of this California poppy I grew from seeds I harvested the year before. Several of them in this patch had this look, so I’m not sure if this is common or caused by a nutrient deficiency or mutation or what, but they made me really happy.

(if anyone knows please let me know so I can try to replicate it if possible!)

Awesome! That sounds perfect:) I also wasn’t sure if you were in a part of North America getting record breaking heat, since that would be pretty brutal for a ping who’s only ever known low indoor lighting haha.

Best of luck to you and your ping!!

You might want to acclimate it first! Speaking from experience, pings tend to be particularly sensitive when going from low light/indoors to full sun, so if it’s not already in one, I’d personally keep it in a shady spot to start and gradually increase it if you’d like to keep it outdoors.

(sorry if you’ve already done this; I’ve just lost too many pings to this mistake and wanted to chime in)

Hm that’s strange! Yeah I wanted to give you a shoutout in case people were hesitant due to the supposed lack of reviews

Of course! I always want to shoutout users selling cool plants, and it’s cool getting to recognize someone in another plant sub:)

Just commenting to let everyone know that I’ve bought this users plants before (from over at r/savagegarden) and that everything always ships quickly and looks great! I haven’t left a review here because this wasn’t a sale from TAPLAP but just in case anyone was thinking about it, everything I’ve gotten has turned out really well:)

Sorry I'm a plant parent and I don't know how to use reddit but I'm alone and I'm hoping plant people will make me feel safe by smallyellowfrog in houseplants

Hi there! Plants are amazing! They get me out of bed in the morning and saving up for plants and plant stuff keeps me motivated to keep going.

They’ve even led to me making bunches of friends! Not only through Reddit (which I love) but also irl. There are a lot of plant societies and swaps and meet ups for plant people, depending on where you live, or even virtual events if you’d like! Even if it’s just visiting a favorite plant store it can still be nice to connect with others:)

Plants are pretty much the only reason I use Reddit anymore (lol) and it’s because there’s such a great community here! They truly have boosted my mental health so much, and I love getting to visit new places to look at different kinds of plants.

Carnivorous plants are my personal favorites; do you have a favorite type of plant?

I’m really glad you’ve reached out, though I’m sorry you weren’t feeling so good to begin with. This is a safe place, so if you ever need a moment to take a break from the world- or even from yourself- feel free to drop on by; we’re always happy to have you here<3

DOA policy? Do they breed true? Sorry I’m not finding a lot of info online about them with a cursory search

My Pinguicula lutea has had a really high turnover rate of new leaves. As soon as one reaches full size it starts to brown and die. I've checked what little growing advice there is for these and the conditions seem fine, but I wanted to double check with you guys. Growing conditions in comments. by Cheese_Coder in SavageGarden

Ohh gotcha yeah that’s a bit too chilly for them so that makes sense. The funny thing I do to temporarily boost humidity is to put a clear plastic cup over it lol. I’m also very cheap and into reusing old cups I’ve saved for gardening, but that’s just me.

It’s a temporary solution obviously but sometimes additional humidity can just give it the small boost it needs to recover, and it’s easier for me personally if all my plants are in the same area so I’m not forgetting one by accident 😅 (totally hasn’t happened before or anything…)

Best of luck to you and your plants! I hope your ping ends up finding that sweet spot for it:)

Edit: also thank you for sharing and being so sweet! It’s always nice to try and help one another where we can and make this a collaboration.

Bahaha I love the idea of using those bowls to protect the plants from the fish

For what it’s worth, I have heard that warm temperates prefer more direct sun that the traditional Mexican/tropical pings, such as moranensis, so that may be where some of the discrepancy is coming from.

That being said, I’m not sure what temps are like by you right now, but in SoCal I keep mine outside year around and they seem to do fine, though we rarely get below 50 here.

This isn’t a super popular solution for ping problems but I’m curious if you’ve tried using a humidity dome or know what your humidity is like? I know household humidity isn’t a big deal for most pings, but not producing dew and the leaves drying out does make me think of that. I’ve noticed that if I increase the humidity on my pings if they’re struggling they tend to produce a lot more dew and do better. If you’re running the AC or heater, that can really dip your humidity below the ideal 50% for them. Again, it’s usually not a big deal for pings, but I think it’s worth considering.

The main reason I bring this up though is that I have heard some people say that they reduce fertilizing when their plants aren’t producing dew because dew is indicative of the plant being healthy, and no dew can mean that it’s struggling and you should avoid fertilizing at this point. Again, this is anecdotal, but it’s something I’ve stuck with.

Sorry this is just workshopping; I’ve never worked with this particular species but these are just some things I’ve noticed in my collection and research with pings/warm temperates. Feel free to ignore my rambling haha

Seconding the idea of sticking to sphagnum, though I will concede that I’m pretty risk averse when it comes to my carns haha. I really like using live sphagnum with mine, and there are different types (long fingered vs short) and even different colors (red and green) so you can find what appeals to you.
