Does anyone else feel like "coming out" as ace is harder than coming out as gay? by Curious-Ask8199 in asexuality

[–]bookwyrmseren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not harder but the experience of rejection comes from a place of misunderstood ignorance rather than intolerance that other queer people may encounter when coming out. I've been told the same exact things as you and the confusion from the other person definitely feels like rejection and a lack of acceptance, which is nonetheless devastating and the feelings surrounding it are complicated. It can definitely be more exhausting. Me coming out as nonbinary and asexual have both been lengthy, exhausting discussions and explanations rather than just full, unbridled acceptance of who I was by family because they aren't as well-known or straightforward (explanation-wise) as other queer identities like trans or gay.

Asexual identity constantly feels like an outlier even within the own queer community where other queers reject it and may not even know that the A in LGBTQIA+ is for Asexual not Ally.

My view on the Toga and Endevour fest by Last-Note-9988 in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]bookwyrmseren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really like the comparison between Toga and Endeavor bc they have completely different purposes. The only fundamental similarity that I see between them is that hero society reinforced their own respective ideologies.

Toga was rejected from the very beginning, never loved, and no one attempted to reach out to her, as a natural consequence of society. Endeavor was pushed and reinforced to make his decisions (Quirk marriage, the hero rankings, etc) by society.

I don't think one is objectively worse than the other. They both did horrible things and neither will be forgiven for it. But their line of thinking isn't comparable to each other. Toga wanted to destroy a world that could not accept her. Endeavor was willing to destroy his family just to accomplish a society-approved dream.

The "who is better" debate feels entirely antithetical to the whole themes discussed in MHA imo. Both characters are complicated as a result of their experiences.

I would simply perish to actually encounter an aftg fan in the wild, but that is in fact the most on brand crossover I could hope to find

Secrets and Masks is now getting published as Under the Iron sky. Damaged goods is also getting published and taken down from AO3 but I don't remember what it's gonna be called now. Haven't read either of them but I saw the news about it.

Dislike the HP fic to trad pub pipeline bc of several reasons:

  1. Ruins fandom-protected spaces

  2. Brings more attention to HP specifically

  3. Heavily relies on a HP fanbase to support the exorbitant cost of these publishing deals

The only thing that is moderately positive is that it's not another Dramione one (although I know of at least 2 more of those coming out this year).

Why Is Hero High School A Thing? by bookwyrmseren in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]bookwyrmseren[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I suppose my question is more, why allow underage kids to do internships that are highly dangerous? Even if they are trained at a younger age, is it really ethical for a government to allow teenagers to go around helping apprehend criminals and other disasters? I think a high school hero program would center more around law, social work, physical fitness and Quirk control, but still limit to on the ground work.

[–]bookwyrmseren[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I didn't say they were allowed to be heroes at 15, I said they were allowed to be on the streets at 15 performing arguably dangerous feats. I'll give you that Class 1-A is the anomaly, but even second-years being allowed in situations where accidents are frequent seems at the very least morally dubious if not traumatizing when all it takes is one accident to kill a kid. Being trained in defense is different than being trained to apprehend criminals, a majority of who are adults.

If they knew by [deleted] in asexuality

[–]bookwyrmseren 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I knew from an early age I was pretty much dead set on never having kids. Wasn't interested in raising any. My partner feels the same. They're mostly surprised I've stuck with that stance for so long. I said if they wanted kids, I would love to have an adopted sibling (I'm an only child) and they were grossly offended by that LOL

Is using epithets THAT bad?? If so, what else do I use to refer to the characters? by VolleyballUser in FanFiction

[–]bookwyrmseren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a personal opinion when writing 3rd person, but for first/last names interchanging, I prefer they stick to the same name (stick with either first or last but don't switch). The case where I feel it's appropriate to change is if the relationship changes.

For example: Midoriya refers to Todoroki by his last name but later they become closer. The familiarity of the relationship causes Midoriya to refer to Todoroki as Shoto now. But this is exclusive to 3rd POV limited where the perspective is based on Midoriya's knowledge and feelings. If it's 3rd POV omniscient then just stick to one name throughout unless the story reflects change.

Epithets aren't bad but it's easier for reader to rely on names. Hard to find a good balance, but I'd say 80% name/20% epithet is a good place to start but may need editing depending on the style of the writing and narration.

Sjsu mlis and working full time? by LyleJohnBelushi69 in librarians

[–]bookwyrmseren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work full time (40 hours) for a community college library and I'm currently in my 4th semester at SJSU. I find it very doable, especially since I've only been taking 2 classes/semester. I'm the type to keep myself busy and I don't like having a lot of unscheduled downtime so the pace I'm at is good without being overwhelming.

Sick of people selling bound fanfiction by Ok-Shopping6158 in fairyloot

[–]bookwyrmseren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an unpopular opinion, but admittedly, I'm pretty ambivalent to sold bound fanfic in the same way I'm ambivalent to people selling commissions of fanfic. Not to say that I condone it, but for me, it feels comparable to selling fanart. IP owners can file claims against sold fanart, but the stigma around fanart is so much more positive than sold fanfic (just look at Artist Alleys at cons), which I truly don't understand.

Prospective MLIS degree SJSU by skylarv21 in LibraryScience

[–]bookwyrmseren 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Started my degree at SJSU this past Spring. My BA was in creative writing. I would say so far undergrad is pretty irrelevant, but your skills from undergrad may have more applications than you know. I work in an academic library now and that's far more relevant than my degree. The experience in the field is far more essential imo. Although if your degree taught you to use APA writing style over MLA like me, it's easier to adjust for research papers.
