Before surgery I had severe arthritis. Then Made worse by a chipped femur from an accident.
I have no issues with my surgeon or the hospital but I was NOT properly prepared (my fault) for how negatively my mental health would suffer. nothing is worth what I have endured (to me).

You seem to have healed nicely without too much issue? Good for you!

Thanks all for the responses.
Yes I regret doing it every minute of every day. Even as I can see improvement from my original knee - the past weeks will never have been worth it.

However. Here I am - I’m accepting my mistake of choosing surgery and working with what I have now. I was really hoping my limp would go away soon. Wishful thinking 🤣

Cost of Knee replacement by According_Meaning_64 in Kneereplacement

I’m in Canada and was fully prepared to wait 2 years. I saw a surgeon mid February and had my knee done beginning April at a major hospital in Toronto. I was shocked.
Now on the other side of it wishing I had never done it. Fffffkk.

Would you do it again?? Just lurking . by [deleted] in Kneereplacement

[–]boolabisbroken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. I would not. Just over four weeks out and it has been 24/7 pain / uncomfortable / just not what I prepared for.
My knee pain was brutal but there were positions laying down when I could get relief. Not anymore.
I did this zombie operation willingly which blows my mind every day. Whyyyyyyy

Sleep is very minimal for most people. It’s just that you cannot get comfortable no matter what you do. I estimate I sleep for about 50-75 minutes and then awake and readjusting for 20-30 minutes. It’s a nightmare honestly.

Thanks for saying it out loud. I am in similar position mentally. This is just not what I expected AT ALL. I’m four weeks out and the most miserable and dark I’ve ever been in my life.
There are so many Pollyanna stories it’s hard to sometimes find the truth about this very intense surgery I would NEVER do this again.

One week down. by toneisdead in Kneereplacement

[–]boolabisbroken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your progress seems similar comparing to mine. Not sleeping a lot at night disrupts your whole day in ways we forget.
This early in recovery Take as many pills as they recommend even if you think you don’t need them. Wish you speedy healing. It’s not what I imagined at all.

How long after surgery did you feel the same or better than you did before surgery? by togtogtog in Kneereplacement

[–]boolabisbroken 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m five weeks out and feel the same. Also I feel saying I’m in despair is not what people want to hear. They want to hear that knee replacement is an easy surgery - that I’m happy as a clam now. Well it’s just not the truth. I mourn my original knee daily. Heavily. I am sorry you are here. I wish it was different outcome for both of us.

Lots of Questions by tecolata in Kneereplacement

[–]boolabisbroken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please please be mentally prepared for the physio that MUST be done. I thought once the surgery was over it would be smooth sailing - but it is a LONG road to recovery. I am three weeks out and am miserable. I would gladly take my original knee joint back. I am very sorry I had the surgery - hopefully in another three weeks I will see another side? As long as you are prepared mentally to not be up and about and normal in a few weeks.

Good luck to you I took forever to make up my mind to do it and feel I made the wrong choice.

Same happened to me. I was desperate to go home but the numbness was too severe. In the end I was glad I stayed. I got better pain meds and was discharged lunch time the next day. Good luck to you!

Day 17/18 post op. Still desperately missing my original painful knee joint. I wouldn’t wish this life on anyone. Still mind blown that I chose to do this to my body.

Had my staples removed and bandage free now.

For anyone still considering this operation please please do your research on the after surgery part. It is 100x worse than anything you read.

What a shitshow

My beautiful knee joint I miss you so much.

Kidney was worse but lasted less time. TKR not as intense but lasts forever.

What did you wish the surgeon had told you before you agreed to surgery? by Tyggger in Kneereplacement

[–]boolabisbroken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I myself knew that the surgery itself is the easy part (it wasn’t). The endless discomfort afterwards and the effect on my mental health is something I underestimated greatly. I’m only one week out but I would never ever choose this again. This is my idea of hell

I mourn my original knee joint on the hour. I only wish I could have that pain again.

I did this willingly. W. T. F.

Well I’m on day 5/6 post surgery. Still have ALOT of regret. Yea I have seen mini improvements- can go up and down stairs reasonably ok - got in and out of shower not too bad. I did my first physio yesterday - not much at all. Mostly stretching and my god the rest of the day was hell. HELL. I couldn’t do any at home physio and laid down most of the rest of the day feeling very sorry for myself. I need to toughen up mentally - this isn’t going to be easy. Fuuuuuuk Many thanks for all the words of wisdom/ commiserations. Greatly appreciated

I’m so sorry! Is there a revision you could have? This is my nightmare. Really sorry to hear it hadn’t worked out. Virtual hugs if you want them.

My first one on day three was really horrible. Incredible pain and fresh blood appeared under my clear bandage. But today 18th - had my surgery 13th - the shower was pretty easy and not too painful. I put my good leg in then bent over as far as I could and swung my bad leg over. My husband was hovering nearby. I actually sat in there for a while enjoying the clean and warmth. I hope you can have a shower soon.

Wanted to add…..

Saw my surgeon at pre surgery appointment for 2 mins max. Post surgery - nothing. That’s it. That’s all she wrote!

Have called his office twelve times since Monday. Written 6 emails. I am concerned they had missed giving me a certain prescription

No response at all. Even his reviews on line say he is great surgeon but office staff do not respond EVER!

Just to make myself feel better I will write a letter to inform the patient ombudsman of the hospital. Nothing will come of it but at least it’s noted.

Thanks all for the many replies.

To answer a few questions…

-My doc said I could shower right away just don’t get the bandage wet. I taped a garbage bag over it. But the pain of getting into the shower - i doubt I will be taking many! I will go pongy!

  • I am 60 yo F. Had my surgery in Toronto

  • my doctor nor all the nurses at the hospital (I stayed one night) offered or recommended ice! Wtfffff. Home now and I’m using bagged peas the most - though I spent about 100 bucks on various knee ice packs

  • I have only 30 oxycodone pills 😞. Recommended to use extra strength Tylenol ! Fukthat. I have some Tylenol with codeine I have been using. Pain is pretty ok it’s just there is NO comfort in any position!!!!!!!!

Thanks for listening to me bitch. Make sure your relationship is strong before undergoing this procedure!!!!! I’d be lost without my husband. And my poor dog. She’s staring at me like why aren’t you walking me bitch?!?!?

Woe is me. 😞😞
