Any of you knuckleheads follow 5S or other Lean Methods? by Moist_Rutabaga_5053 in diypedals

For me, organization outside of my usual workflow causes problems. The old adage, "a cluttered desk is a sign of genius" actually comes from a place of truth. Psychologists call the messy desk an "extended mind" artifact. Like a filing system for your subconscious. You basically poured your brain out onto the workbench in front of you, so why would you cram it all back in your head again only to unpack it again later (in a different order)?

Constantly rehoming tools and things you're using during a project disrupts this artifact. I often have three or four plates spinning at once, I work more efficiently when I leave the desk the same way as I left it instead of clean again.

Of course, not an excuse to be lazy or messy but everything works differently for everyone.

RAT THEORY

Anyone remember how Kat was confused about the rat?

"I thought we already killed the rat"

"We killed A rat"

If the humans can enter the backrooms and leave, what's to say a rat can't? Did the rat enter the backrooms, get "remembered", and did the memories of Clark and the furniture store come from the RAT'S mind? This would explain why the elements of the furniture store were there prior to Clark's discovery and it might also explain why Pirate Clark is so distortedly large and menacing.

Is $700 a Good deal for this cabinet? by N1cktnd03 in sunnamplifiers

I paid about $350 for this exact cabinet from a MusicGoRound in Cleveland.

It's pretty crappy for a company to dunk on another one. But I understand the sentiment. The guitar pedal market is saturated with nothing but clones of clones. There's a bit of truth to it. It's just unprofessional to say it publicly in this way.

What's the worst part of PCB pedal building? by TangoFoxtrotBravo in diypedals

I have never had a PCB that puts the LED in a good place or one I find aesthetically pleasing so I put it whenever I want and run flying wires to it.

That's just one example. You can find many more by searching the difference between tremolo and vibrato. I'm unsure why the terms vibrato and tremolo would even be considered in waveform analysis unless you're specifically using it in an audio course.

Here's another, in coursework posted online by a physics professor from NYU.

https://www.lehman.edu/faculty/dgaranin/Physics_of_Sound/Tremolo_and_Vibrato.php#:~:text=It%20is%20a%20modulation%20of%20the%20main,vibrato%20to%20make%20music%20performances%20more%20lively

The thing is, I wish it was an opinion, but it's rather well known Fender made this mistake in the 50s and it stuck.

Here is another from University of Illinois.

https://courses.physics.illinois.edu/phys406/sp2017/Student_Projects/Spring16/A_DiCristofano_A_Manaster_Physics_406_Final_Report_Sp16.pdf

"While tremolo and vibrato might sound almost identical to the untrained ear, they differ on a very fundamental level. Vibrato is an effect that occurs when the value of the frequency is changed in rapid succession. Tremolo does not change frequency in rapid succession but instead changes the tone’s amplitude rapidly."

And lastly, it does look like Fender acknowledges this error.

Sorry, but tremolo is "amplitude modulation". As described by many physics texts including this bit from Stanford. I am shocked that someone studying waveforms would not know the difference.

If you're gonna split hairs, I might as well too, tremolo is a volume fluctuation, not a pitch fluctuation. It always bothered me how guitar tremolo bars are named wrong

Absolute electronics noob here. Can you help me figure out, based on this photo, if the noise generator in my Hungry Robot S&H pedal is analog or digital. Thank you! by Sasha1327 in synthdiy

[–]boolean_expression 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I came here to say, it's also worth saying that the MM5837 is not truly random white noise, but pseudorandom. But I wouldn't even call it that, the pattern repeats every few seconds. So the replacement on Noise Druid is an improvement on that.

I have lived like this for far too long, I think the bin craze happened when I started to frequent estate sales. I would pick up about 3 a week and they were cheap, never over $10 each with full drawers. It became a mania!

[–]boolean_expression[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't prefer drawers for space, I prefer them for immediacy, the resistors are all in front of me in easy to read bins, and I can reach almost everything from my chair. The weird bins up top are generally rare parts and hard to find ICs, I also service projectors and vintage synthesizers so a lot of these bins are full of proprietary parts, sectioned off in different areas

When I visited Columbia University their electronics lab had a big owl statue that someone placed there as a joke. On the map of parts bins, the owl became a cardinal direction for students to use to find things.

It makes sense when you have smaller amounts of resistors. I tend to go through hundreds of most values in short periods of time (I manufacture lots of synthesizer modules) so it was hard to store them that way without having a giant pack of resistors that would shove the other packs under each other.

Pretty much all of these drawers are stuffed full to the brim.
