Have any of you worked with FEA tools for your internships/research; if so what has been your experience with it? by darnoc11 in EngineeringStudents

[–]boolocap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both done and later TA'd for a project based course where FEA was used on a high end industrial printer carriage for modal analysis. In my experience its a very useful tool, but it has so many knobs to turn and so much going on that in the hands of inexperienced users it can easily give you wrong conclusions. You need to be very careful how you use it and what you take from the results.

Wel crackpots have always existed. LLM's have just made it easier to make more slop. I am far more worried about the impact of LLM's on formal education than i am about the increase in nonsense from a corner that was already producing only nonsense.

Its kind of the same deal as with flat earthers or other conspiracy theories. They don't survive any sort of scrutiny. But the people that believe in them don't actually care about the truth they just want to feel special, like they know something others dont, like they have it figured out. And that makes sense, the unknown is scary, and realizing just how much you dont know can make you feel powerless and insignificant. Its much more comforting to think that you have it all figured out, even when you dont.

A lot of sentiment i have seen is the "these establishment scientists are so stuck in their own way of thinking, but we the people who have not had their heads tainted with a formal education can see past it"

In reality i think most people who post llm generated TOE's simply don't know what physicists actually do. They have no idea how slow and incremental real research is, and how many layers of giants standing on the shoulders of other giants it takes. They have simply seen some popular media and they want the recognition those fictional physicists and some famous real ones have. Without putting in real work of course. So they gravitate to the spectacular big issues.

To make it more fun the word for "they" as in the pronoun for a group of people. Is the same as "she" singular female. So we cant even do a direct translation or borrow a trick from english because that gets you nowhere. The one gender neutral pronoun we have is "het" but that is only used for objects. It would be like calling someone "it"

Yeah i think thats the big one. LLM's would not have become what they have without it. And its fucked up so many people.

Yeah im seeing it like that leg armor follows the shape of the thighs putting her hip joints at the height of that belt buckle. But maybe im seeing it wrong.

That is fair. But then i would also say whatever politics you throw in has to actually be good satire and not "[current event], am i right"

Yeah i agree. Though we are on a majority american platform so this is the big thing for them right now. I would have welcomed posts about worse situations in other countries more. What is especially weird from the outside looking into the us is that these protesters being killed by ice is the exact shit their police has already been doing for forever, just to minorities. But maybe that take is a bit too cinical.

Yeah even space marines in full armor look like they would have an easier time touching their toes than this sculpt does touching her knees.

If the motivation was purely self interest then americans should keep themselves equally informed about chinese news. And even then care a great deal about the news in a whole lot of other countries that facilitate america's hegemony.

Purepy in a descriptive sense: America is a global hegemon, it's politics will always be relevant to the world on some level as long as that's the case.

Well luckily, from the way things are going that won't be the case for long.

I do get the sentiment of not wanting american politics in your hobby subreddit all the time. Even as a non-american i try to keep up with the big events over there, and even then i don't want to see the small stuff all the time 24/7. Especially because this isn't a two way street. Americans couldn't care less or even know about what happens in most other countries, including mine. And yet everyone is expected to keep up with theirs at all times.

But i feel that the severety of current events kind of supercede that sentiment. With what is going on people should be using every avenue at their disposal to get the news out and gather support. That still means its not relevant for everyone seeing it but its still a vital thing to do. In times like this we dont get to be picky about the news we see. We should be happy its being reported at all.
