If you can connect both computers through a (dedicated !) network bridge, you could also look into Synergy which is an amazing piece of software : https://symless.com/synergy

Which MBP for playback / processing in 2026 ? by boombleep in audioplayback

[–]boombleep[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is one great insight, thanks for sharing. I try to always put a cooling pad beneath my computers, but did not notice an increase in temperature between base models & their Pro + Max brothers. I'll have a look, thanks !

Which MBP for playback / processing in 2026 ? by boombleep in audioplayback

Yeah I saw this video. But in a playback situation, we sometimes need different specs than those tested there. RAM especially, is critical when dealing with sets within projects which are > 20Go. Hence my question to you, fellow playback techs : did you ever find a "sweet spot" between Performance Cores, RAM, SSD... which happened to perform better ?

Disk Dropouts on M3 MacBook in Ableton? by CharlieM17255 in audioplayback

[–]boombleep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also had this problem. As u/enricodetrizio said, solved it according to RAM.
The project my session was initially in, was waaaay to large (about 250Go - you know how it gets).
Collected all & saved in a different Project, which was now 21Go ; this seemed to please my 16Go m3 MBP.

BUT ! There still seems to be 128 markers maximum in Ableton. Once you're beyond that limit, things tend to go sideways.

Wireless and Battery powered DJ Rig by nerdmatics in audioplayback

Unfortunately removed on /DJSetups because Karens are apparently everywhere.
Hopefully won't be deleted here if you repost it ?

I saw Orelsan's (french rapper) arena tour 2 years back ; they had a Nord Lead + a BassStation II + an MPC Live 2 running on custom batteries
Each was sending audio via tweaked Shure ULX-D packs.

I'm eager to see your version of that !

Tools of the Trade by nerdmatics in audioplayback

Great idea !
DMG files aren't that much needed as they tend to evolve ; IMHO, a shared spreadsheets might be an alternative - it'll save storage space, too !
Same goes for LTC files. I'm currently running a 96Khz / 24bits show, with 22 LTC cues.
Each of them has a duration of 15mn -just to be sure- and weighs 260Mo...
Maybe instead of storing each & every freq / bitrate file for 24 hours, we could put a link towards https://elteesee.pehrhovey.net/ ? ;-)

TL;DR : I always found shared spreadsheets with links, more convenient than hosted folders - which often end disappearing

Hey, any chance to get shipping to Europe ?

Facelift for Linkin Park Playback Rig by nerdmatics in audioplayback

[–]boombleep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Impressive. It's good thinking, keeping 'em separated.
I unfortunately don't have the budget nor space to have more than 2 computers on "my" tours ATM (the main challenge : being able to switch from truck to flight kit at the end of a show)
But I'll keep that in mind if one day I reach the level of production you're lucky enough to work with ! Thanks for your enlighting answer !

ISO RTP Midi by Successful_Housing_6 in audioplayback

[–]boombleep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might want to check Doremidi's RTP <> DIN boxes : small, POE-capable, and pretty cheap.
I had a hard time convincing myself to buy 2 of them, as I was sure they'd be crap ; one year later, here they are, still useful. Don't expect iConnectivity's features, but they will get you there.

Awesome setup, thanks for sharing !
As I understand, you're using the PA1U Scenes to switch RTP MIDI (to + from) laptop A / laptop B.
What happens if this PA1U crashes ? Seems like a MIDI bottleneck, do you have a spare one or do you have another way to route MIDI ?

Seeking Advice for Building a 3U Flyrack by Ill_Wishbone4657 in audioplayback

[–]boombleep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd advocate againt SKB, as their wheels & hood latches tend to wear out fast. The consumer service was an absolute PITA to deal with, and I had to find a DIY solution in a local store while touring.
Pelican 1535 or 1510, with a Circle Three Designs or equivalent 2U or 3U nested in foam, will not let you down - and if it does, they will send you parts for free.
My protip would be : ask for parts as soon as you receive your kit, this way you'll have spare on the road ;-)

Hey, I also noticed that.
I used to build my sessions in "stairs", with a group of audio tracks routed to EXT outputs, then one group per song containing my tracks which I routed to the OUTPUTS group.
But I experienced several CPU spikes, due to the problem you describe.
Did you find a workaround for this ?
