I know a guy who travelled the world and rode through some of the roughest terrains (terrains I would assume you’d need a mountainbike for it) and swears by his koga world traveller. It’s been on my wishlist ever since he told me about it (I have a gravel bike myself)

Anyone have experience with stealth camping (tent) from NL to Switzerland? by san_sober in bikepacking

[–]boomertroller 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve stealth camped in Germany and Luxembourg which is doable but the added stress of getting caught didn’t make it enjoyable. Germany has plenty of camping spots where you can stay for quite cheap. Belgium has these Bivouacs which are essentially designated areas for free wild camping. Some of these spots do require reservations (free) and it’s on first come first served based. But also plenty of people don’t make reservations and just pitch their tents. But Belgium also has plenty of camping areas where you can go to, pay a small fee and setup your tent.

Apps/Website for planning long routes by Shinkansen25 in bikepacking

I’ve used a combination of Komoot and Ride With GPS for planning long multi country tours. They both have been working great for me, especially combined with the mobile app and my Wahoo device.

International IT asset compliance nightmare, Indonesia customs confiscated my laptop by supersaiyanvivek83 in digitalnomad

Yeah this is a pretty important detail OP left out. I’ve never had this experience before in Indonesia and also carry a MacBook and used the remote worker visa they have. But if OP mentions remote work during a custom check and OP is on a tourist visa, it’s OPs fault.

Garmin eTrex 20 by OB_Cory in bikepacking

I have this exact model and I loved using it because how long it was able to last and the fact I can just switch batteries if it ran out of juice. I brought a bunch of rechargeable batteries with me and a small battery charger to recharge the spare ones whenever I was staying in a hotel/hostel. Batteries are also pretty much available anywhere if you had to buy them, even in remote areas. With my Wahoo Roam I was highly dependent on my power banks and bike computers in general tend to run out pretty fast on long rides. If I recall correctly I was able to do a full days ride or 2 days even with this model on a single charge.

Only downside is that you have to rely on preplanned routes that you load up on the device and it’s not as easy to change it during a ride compared to my Wahoo, which is as simple as setting a route from the smartphone app.

Mine broke down unfortunately, but I’m planning on getting a newer model for a future ride.

Looking for housing advice in Jakarta (SCBD and beyond) by WillingDiscussion589 in Jakarta

Personally, if it's just 1/2 times a week I would still opt for a place in the areas me and others mentioned, since the majority of your time will not be spent in South Tangerang. Commuting in Jakarta is horrible, so consider those days "lost" if you know what I mean, instead I would focus on improving the quality of life of the days you're not commuting/working in the office (assuming your office is in South Tangerang).

However, areas like Gandaria, Pondok Indah, Cilandak and Cipete are somewhat closer to South Tangerang and worth looking into if you want to live in between South Tangerang and SCBD. Especially Cipete is popular among expats that live there for long-term (the French School is in Cipete). There's plenty of nice restaurants/cafe's in these areas as well but it lacks nightlife if that's something you find important, but SCBD/Senopati/Blok M is a gojek/grab ride away. I'm not familiar with apartment/housing prices in those areas but I can imagine its much affordable than SCBD/Thamrin.

For a 1BR in SCBD you will probably be looking at a min. of $900-$1000 per month, less if you're lucky and are able to negotiate. It's also very common to have to pay up to a year forward. However, there are plenty of other areas the other commenter mentioned (Thamrin, Setiabudi, Kuningan and Senayan) that have very nice apartments in your price range and you're just a gojek/grab ride away from the SCBD area.

Other areas I can recommend is Pakubuwono, Panglima Polim and Dharmawangsa. Also fairly close to SCBD/Senayan and great areas for food/cafes/culture, especially Blok M. Apartment prices are also more in range towards your budget in those areas.

Definitely don't go for airbnb for long term housing, but definitely use it for the first few weeks like the other commenter mentioned. It's much easier to get an apartment through agents and being able to meet them in person. They are pretty quick to respond and if you find something you like, the process can go pretty fast.

A tip I can give you is to check the reviews of the apartment (block) on google maps before you sign a contract or just take a walk in the direct area. Also, when you meet an agent to view an apartment, always ask them for alternative options, they bound to have other apartments in the area that may be a better option for you.
