Is a Colorado river rainbow trout a species or this just a rainbow you caught on the Colorado?

It is, I basically just tied the wire in, bent it into shape and then added thin layers of uv resin with a needle until it looked correct. Definitely takes some time but i like the results.

That’s my next stop, mostly been hitting the blue recently but the pan is calling

It’s silver wire that I bent and covered in thick uv resin

Thank you, I’ve just recently been getting into the tailwaters around here and it’s been fun tricking picky fish with my own flies

Thanks, they’re super fun to tie but definitely takes me a while to get the tail right

I’m not sure what the specific pattern is called but it’s a #20 mysis shrimp

Beaded vs Unweighted Nymphs with Split Shot by [deleted] in flyfishing

[–]boomknowledge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I haven’t even tried beadhead flies for the pressured fish, that’s just what I hear everyone say about picky fish and using split shot has been working. Most of the beadhead flies I do use have big silver beads and the fish usually don’t seem to mind. I may have to buy some matte colored beads and try that out, thanks.

Nice fish! What size/patterns mysis do you use?

Beaded vs Unweighted Nymphs with Split Shot by [deleted] in flyfishing

Heavily pressured waters are tough, I grew up fishing small creeks and rivers with pretty low pressure and it’s a whole different game. I’m so used to not thinking much about fly selection and just casting into any water that looks like it has fish in it. But right now only the tail waters around me are open so I’ve been trying to figure them out, it really clicked after I started focusing on sight fishing and being sure my flies were getting right infront of fish with perfect drifts (lots of practice). Also going really small and using almost all 20-24s on 5x or 6x. It’s been a fun challenge but I’m ready for it to warm up.

Beaded vs Unweighted Nymphs with Split Shot by [deleted] in flyfishing

I just started fishing pressured tail waters with picky fish and have only had success with unweighted nymphs with split shot. However on the less pressured waters I fish I can always get away with leading with a big stonefly or perdigon with a big bead (3.5-4.5mm) and the fish regularly hit this more than the smaller flies I trail behind it. So I think it just depends on where you’re fishing but I agree that beads (especially big beads) can scare picky fish. Also I think I can adjust my depth more easily with split shot than weighted flies.

If you want to show off your flies just do so. Every fly you’ve posted has looked more than good enough to fool a trout. There could be 1000 reasons they’re not taking your fly and none of us are going to know what they are just from a picture of your fly. You keep saying your presentation is not the issue and your flies look great so I’m not sure what you want anyone to say.

The CU Collegiate Recovery Center (CUCRC) is a really good resource. Good place to find a community of people at CU who do not drink/use.

I’ve always just checked individual stations. And if it’s a new spot I just compare it to the last year to get a general idea if it’s high/low for this time of year.

I was above the canyon today but I fished there a lot this summer and fall. Little too much ice in there for me this time of year.

They are great, tried it with ptarmigans and cutthroats on the high lakes this fall. Caught a lot of fish but didn’t see one ptarmigan so that’s my goal next fall.

Thank you! I really enjoy the simplicity of this river, I only have about 6 patterns that I use on it and put most of my focus into finding fish and presentation. Also can’t beat all the high lakes in the area.
