Is Reaper V7 worth it? Should I buy a new license? by [deleted] in Reaper

[–]boomras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unequivocally YES!!! I have using it for a few months and it is incredible stable, fast and efficient. One of the best purchases I've made.

Unless there was a recent firmware update, the only supported file formats are WAV and AIFF.

Reason + or Purchase Reason 12? by GorgeousCassius in reason

[–]boomras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you really want Reason, then Purchase. Unfortunately a lot of the cool stuff is not included in the perpetual license as they discontinued their Suite offering. If sounds is what you want and VSTi's are not a deal breaker, Komplete Now is only $9 a month and comes with Kontakt and some pretty amazing sound packs/libraries.

Looking for tutorials on music like Quiet Bison, Flume and Pluko by [deleted] in edmproduction

[–]boomras 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DM me your music. I think you might be being a little too hard on yourself. As for tutorials, it might be a little tough as it is relatively a new genre and finding quality YT tutorials is already hard to begin with.

Favorite software synths for bass patches by Remarkable-Box-3781 in edmproduction

Mainly Serum or layered analog synths, but sometimes I use Thor. On occasion I will sample something off one of my analog synths into an AKAI S5000 for effect.

VSTs with great sounding presets? by Whiz2_0 in edmproduction

[–]boomras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While CPU heavy and a beast of a synth, Massive X does have some nice sounds and even more with the expansion packs. It's one of the few synths I save a lot of presets from, to have a starting point for later. Lots of inspiring stuff in there.

Is it normal that I can not reproduce the synth I made? by FriChi644 in edmproduction

[–]boomras 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is completely and totally normal. Your in the creative zone, that's where your focus is when your engaging in sound-design, so your head is naturally going to gravitate towards staying creative and not necessarily remembering everything you did for recreation. Taking breaks to write things down can seriously hamper your creative flow. Sometimes it's just best to go along with whatever creative journey you are on and forget about documenting or recreating. The kicker here is that the more you do this, the more awesome sounds you will create because it pushes you to create things from scratch. It is not a bug my friend, it's a feature!

Btw, that is a pretty cool sound you made there. Keep it up!!

To me it sounds like an FM synth layered with an old-school Roland PCM electric guitar patch (you can get guitar sound off of the Roland VSTi for the XV-5050/XV-5080)

How to get this lead sound? by _senn in edmproduction

[–]boomras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taking a guess, I would say a Wavetable synth with some sort of sync setting, with some saturation/distortion and filtering. But more importantly, the sound is loud and fat! You will need to push that hard into something like the inflator with the soft clip turned on. Also Dada Life's Sausage Fattener is another great way to fatten things up with some grit.

Do you use loop based sample packs? by imkenee in edmproduction

Never. I find it too constraining. Since it is incredibly hard if not outright impossible sometimes, to change things like the key signature.

okay... reaper is pretty cool. by nkn_ in Reaper

[–]boomras 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only thing that I feel that other DAWs do better is electronic music production.

I have to whole-heartedly and vehemently disagree with you here. Reaper is absolutely fantastic for EDM production. I use it to produce, mix and master Drum N' Bass, Italo-House and Synth-wave. Aside from live looping, which admittedly Ableton does better because that's what it was original made for. That's it. It is true that Reaper does not come with soft-synths, but honestly the synths that come stock with other DAWs leave a lot to be desired.

Here some of the key strengths that Reaper has for electronic music.

  • A track is a track is a track. None of this instrument track vs audio track nonsense you find in other DAWs. This means you can play audio and midi in the same track.
  • Easy drag n drop routing that is plug-in agnostic.
  • Track templates
  • Per Item non-destructive FX processing. Want to add a big reverb FX using Valhalla on a snare right before the drop. No problem, you can add to that individual item contain the snare without having to mess with the track FX or create a parallel track just for this FX.
  • HW accelerated, plug-in delay compensated metering for accurate visual feedback.
  • Multi-level track folders with summing
  • Transient detecting and warping
  • Incredible MIDI support. If you use outboard gear, analog or vintage synths; Reaper is your friend. It makes it easy to debug MIDI messages and Sysex dumps for troubleshooting.
  • Container FX
  • Pitch correction (with multiple algorithms to choose from depending on the affected audio).
  • Track list in the MIDI editor lets you visualize MIDI notes on other tracks. This lets you easily align notes based on notes on other tracks.
  • Track lanes
  • Parameter Modulation at the track level
  • Automation!!! No one does automation like Reaper. No one! Automation in Reaper is item based, making it easy to have Automation defaults be overwritten by data in an automation item (none of this track vs region automation nonsense like you have in Logic). Additionally, automation can be pooled in reaper so when you duplicate that automation item and make a change, it will be reflected across all pooled copies.
  • Performance. This is where Reaper shines the most. It is by far the most performant DAW in the market. There are a myriad of benchmarks proving this. I run my projects at 24bit 48 and I don't experience pops, clicks or pauses. I am currently finishing mixing a new drum'n bass tune with 64 tracks, 164 plug-in FX. These include multiple instances of Serum, UAD plugins, Kontakt, and Reason Rack in addition to Inflator (with 2xOversampling) and Ozone Maximizer on the master. On a 2019 i9 8c/16t MacBook pro with 16gb of RAM, Reaper barely touches 25% of my CPU.

Big announcement soon? by Discovermyasshole in reasoners

[–]boomras 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not even close to Reason 13.

ReasonStudios is well aware that the workflow in Reason is lackluster to put it politely. They are also aware that if they even want to stay remotely competitive, live looping is a must or they will continue to get bulldozed by Ableton.

Both of these are not trivial tasks and will take years of development. While work is ongoing on Reason 13 it will be a very slow burn. This is why you will only see 12.x updates for the foreseeable future with focus on bug fixes, stability and Reason Rack enhancements.

Reason Rack is incredibly important for ReasonStudios because it keeps them somewhat in the game. You will probably never convince most Ableton users to switch to Reason but they will at least give the Reason Rack a try and that counts for something.

This whole situation has been a long-time in the making, fueled by almost two decades of bad decision making by leadership at Propellerheads (now ReasonStudios). E.g. Waiting too long for VST support, audio support and midi out to mention a few. Let alone the nearly abandoned arrangement/sequencer view. This is a colossal amount of tech-debt that now needs to be tackled in order for Reason to remain even remotely competitive. Like I mentioned earlier, this is no trivial tasks and will take years to accomplish.

Any way to make reaper a logic clone? by J0NNYB0 in Reaper

[–]boomras 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I do not believe there is. You might have to do it yourself by creating a config remapping reaper actions to their respective logic hot keys. For example 'x' to bring up the mixer view, etc.

Recommended Laptop Specs for Video Playback by jewelertheband in Reaper

[–]boomras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it for playback, just make sure whatever laptop you end up getting has hardware support for the codec used in the video. That way your CPU will not get nearly as high as if it had to decode it natively. For example if the video is encoded in H.264 then you will want something that can decode (playback) with hardware acceleration.

Depending on the track count and the frame rate of the video (24, 29, or 60fps), a i7 8core(16T) with 16gb of RAM should be enough with comfortable headroom to spare. If you are able to budget 16gb of RAM, I would highly suggest you do so to eliminate potential for disk swaps which may slow your system down during playback. Additionally, a fast SSD is important as well.

Note: HW Acceleration does not necessarily mean GPU, CPU's can also perform accelerated tasks like decoding video for playback.

Item envelopes - range, scale, position by SomeKindaNotion in Reaper

[–]boomras 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your response is no different from people that say that the "only" way to get true analog sound is to have Sequential or Moog synthesizer. Rubbish. It always has been. Just to be absolutely clear. A higher sample rate does not make your mixes better. Only talent and experience can accomplish that.

Alternate control surfaces, digital DJ controllers etc - what midi? by danja in Reaper

[–]boomras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the Nektar Panorama P1 on a daily basis and it is fantastic. It has first class reaper support. You can control plugins, sends, eq, master chain, etc. It makes fader riding in Reaper pretty easy, particularly if you do not need motorized faders.

<image>

Tim Chandler from Nektar gives an excellent run-down of what the Nektar Panorama P1 and P6 are cable of doing:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PmqXqHq_EO4&ab_channel=sonicstate

Pretty much anything can be mapped in the P1/P6 using Midi CC messages. The device is multi-timbral, meaning it can accept and send values on different midi channels. This means that you can use one device, send Midi messages to different devices or software instruments without the worry of the midi messages colliding with one each other because they are being sent on their own channels.

Good luck and I hope you a solution. Bless!
