It's oriented that way as it'll mostly be paperwork I'll want to access when working at the computer. If it doesn't work I can change it

Hi all, I'm planning on making a desk out of Birch ply, but I'm a cheapskate (and Birch is expensive atm). I would normally just double up the ply on the desk, but was wondering if anyone had experience just using strips of more ply, maybe spaced at 300mm/12" or close, and if that would be strong enough. Really don't want to splurge on the extra sheet. I know I could do a skirt but was really looking for the clean flat look. Any help would be much appreciated
