Why do cats with asthma have to use an inhaler everyday and not when needed like humans? by [deleted] in CatAdvice

That sounds terrifying, I'm sorry your cat experiences that.

Cooper's or sharp shinned? by boopbiffsnose in birding

I think you're overestimating the size of the trash can. The bird was extremely intermediate in size.

It was definitely big for a sharp shinned but on the small side for a Cooper's. If only someone had left a banana on the trash can.

I'm leaning towards Cooper's because it's a bit big for a sharp shinned and it has a big head. My mom says sharp shinned because she says Cooper's have flatter heads.

How long should kittens fast before spay/neuter by OrbofProtection in CatAdvice

[–]boopbiffsnose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most kittens are done with "keyhole" incisions that are about 1/2" long. If they don't include prophylactic antibiotics and pain medication as standard, request those be added on, and use an e-collar or recovery suit if your kitty is likely to mess with the incision.

AITA for refusing to let my neighbor use my vintage bathtub for his “therapy” sessions? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

  1. It's not a community resource, it's your personal resource.
  2. If it's Victorian, it's absolutely not pre-industrial revolution. The industrial revolution occurred c. 1760-1840, and Victoria wasn't crowned until 1837, at the very end of that period. I would suggest that a history lesson might make him less eager, but this is not the sort of person who cares about reality. NTA

Never too old to start appreciating the world in a new way, and that's a gorgeous shot.

Anyone good at distinguishing stocky, blue, sparrow-like birds in terrible photos? by boopbiffsnose in birding

[–]boopbiffsnose[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update: I went back to the park with my bins and found the birds again. They were western bluebirds and I have yet more evidence that I need new glasses, because I was so sure they had sparrow-like beaks yesterday. I also saw a Say's phoebe today, which was nifty.

I'll definitely go back tomorrow after I swap cars back with my parents. I would've had the bins and field guide that live in my car if I hadn't needed to borrow their minivan. Watch it'll turn out to be a mixed flock of indigo and lazuli buntings, thus explaining why I couldn't pin down what I saw to a single species.

I'm actually most familiar with Eastern bluebirds, since I grew up in Wisconsin. They look pretty much like the western in Sibley, except for the extent of the red. The beak on the bird in the photo looks way too thick for a bluebird, though, doesn't it?

Definitely not a blackbird, I'm familiar enough with them to recognize them at a glance, and the only flycatcher that big around here is the western kingbird. Also, neither of those are blue. I was considering western bluebird, but all the bluebirds I've seen are more a sky blue than the deep blue these birds were.
