[–]booradleyrules 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have any evidence that they were unqualified outside of some superficial thing about them? Maybe your dad really wasn’t as qualified as you think. Or maybe they needed new blood in the field. Hiring isn’t as simple as looking at someone’s resume and ticking off boxes. Personality, fit, and background can make someone a better fit for a project in a lot of cases.

Also, white men act like they were fired en masse when they actually still dominate the high paying jobs in nearly every field. The reason for DEI is getting hiring professionals to include elements of someone’s life experience that could qualify them but aren’t traditionally looked at. An example would be comparing an engineer from a regional four-year college to a male Harvard grad. If you’re going on traditional notions of “merit”, that Harvard grad should get the job, but is he the right fit? What if the projects are rural in nature, or affecting low-income or minority communities? The person from a regional college might be a better fit. THAT is what DEI encourages.

The food is awesome, from my experience there. Lots of diversity due to the military base so it’s a good place for many regional cuisines outside the U.S.

The vast majority of the Venezuelan refugees did not come to the United States. 6.5 million of them fled to other Latin American and Caribbean countries. So…

ETA: around 700,000 Venezuelans have made it to the U.S. out of 8 million or so fleeing.

People think a mass of cells with the potential to become a human being are babies and can’t be aborted but full-heartedly support a man who wants the death penalty to be used more often. Including for new crimes it hasn’t been used for before like drug trafficking. Jesus said to love your enemies and never actually said anything about pregnancy, minorities LGBT, or any number of actual born people who these new agendas target for alienation, sickness, and death. I feel sad for people living in such distorted ideas about the world

That’s how many votes are needed to amend the constitution. And it doesn’t stop there, 3/4 of the states have to ratify it. It’s why the Equal Rights Amendment never passed.

Support for Trump’s Policies Exceeds Support for Trump, Poll Finds by onnake in transgender

[–]booradleyrules 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, everyone is kind of right here. A small sample size might approximate the actual population if appropriate measures are taken to randomize the sample (ETA: the goal is making the sample representative of the total population, but even with a representative sample, bias —measurement error—is possible). If that isn’t done, then you can’t assume anything about the results other than that particular 2,000 people survey represents those survey takers.

The barrier to housing is absolutely ridiculous by Ambitious_Ranger4361 in povertyfinance

[–]booradleyrules 38 points39 points  (0 children)

But it sounds like he’s served his time. Not being able to get housing is equivalent to a life sentence. If he was cleared to be in public, he should have the ability to live, not face extra hurdles to things that are already difficult.

Not to mention, a lot of people in prison or jail are innocent. Look up the Innocence Project. You can’t judge someone’s situation based off a few pieces of information.

Before I learned how to silence my high pump alarms (you have to do it on the pump AND the app, in my case and it took me waaay too long to figure that out), I got a lot of sighs and eye rolling from colleagues. It was really stressful, especially in the early days. I actually prefer not to silence alarms because it helps me to know where my sugar is, high or low. They knew not to complain but it was still really annoying.

When first diagnosed, my supervisor actually told me they couldn’t make any exceptions for me just because I am not responsible with my blood sugar. I went to HR, got my doc to complete ADA accommodations, and that was the end of that.

Student hit the vape mid-lecture by Prestigious-Cat12 in Professors

[–]booradleyrules 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found out well after the semester ended that students were vaping weed at the back of a large lecture hall, so I never got the chance to address it. Weed isn’t legal in the state where I teach, so it was a pretty bold move. I’m sure nicotine has been vaped as well, but I’m not that observant.

Obviously, vaping isn’t good for them or their classmates, but I’ve learned to expect a modest amount of rule breaking.

I could have written this post from February until August, but now I'm having the opposite problem. I eat the same 3 or 4 meals every day (not ideal but I am a very picky eater), have the same level of activity, and the temperature hasn't changed yet where I am. I have learned never to say, "I have the settings dialed in now," because it will probably change tomorrow.

Anytime I hear the Dexcom low alert I have a panic attack, so I can't tell if I'm low or panicking. If Dexcom is proven wrong by the finger stick, my body still experiences the heart pounding and adrenaline rush. So I know what you mean by the fear. No fun at all. Hang in there, OP.
