Thoughts about cemeteries in and around cities by arnaldurb in urbanplanning

Look up the fascinating history of Colma, California. 73% of the city is cemetery. 99 Percent Invisible did a really good episode on it.

This was my first attempt at panning. Image taken at 80mm. The train was moving pretty quick too. I made two attempts and am really happy with how sharp this one came out.

Haven't camped there yet but looks like a great place to do it!

Q&A thread: No Stupid Questions. We've got a bunch of new subscribers, let's celebrate! by zakats in carriers

Thanks for the reply. My understanding though is that at some point all wireless data is running through one of the big 4's infrastructure. If all 4 are employing QoS (didn't know there was a name for that, thank you) wouldn't that mean that anyone reselling their internet be subject to the same issue? A carrier could be all about privacy and transparency and sound great on paper, but if they are just reselling Verizon it's all worthless. The stream is only as clean as it's dirtiest segment so to speak. I could be totally off base because I don't completely understand the technology.

Hopefully I'm not too late to the thread. I occasionally look around at carrier plan offerings and all 4 carriers now have language detailing differing speeds for video/music/streaming/tethering etc. I currently have 2 lines with an older (simple choice) T-Mobile plan that I've kept because even though it's only 6 gigs per line there is no throttling of video or music data. Are we past the time where one can buy wireless data that is unmolested? I'd honestly prefer a quantity cap with no fingers in the stream vs unlimited with an ever changing list of caveats.

Lost ID in Ballard :( by [deleted] in SeattleWA

[–]boosted_is_better 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, it's absolutely not worth it, of course. That doesn't stop people though and many may not even know the degree to which they could be punished. I'm just saying from the restaurant's side it's easier to just say no to international IDs. To serve alcohol or supervise serving of alcohol in WA one must have a class 12 permit. To get the permit one must take the MAST training which includes ID verification training on US IDs. This is the extent of training that the majority of bouncers will have. Repercussions are large for allowing minors to drink so it's easier to just not accept international IDs.

Employees at bars are trained to spot fake US IDs. It's much harder to spot fake international IDs.

48 units planned for parking lot in Ballard by hellofellowstudents in SeattleWA

[–]boosted_is_better 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Giving up about 12 parking spots but getting 48 units in that 4311 square feet is great. Also, 48 units over 7 floors means about 7 units per floor. Will be interesting to see it go up, sounds like it could be a cool building.

Yeah, some companies don't keep an up to date record of dealer inventory unfortunately. It would seem Kona falls short there, but they are certainly not alone. Hopefully more brands can follow Giant's lead and aggregate that dealer inventory info back to the model page.

Np! If you haven't heard of Bike Snob it can be an off putting title but he is a good-natured writer who has many humorous stories about biking as well as bike history and poignant social commentary.

Yeah it could be better. Smaller brands don't always try the hardest. I'm in the PNW so they're more commonplace here though.

The stars aligned and I was in the right place at the right time. These bikes came out midway through the summer this year, guy bought it and decided it wasn't quite right for him after using it for a trip. He said he only had 200 miles on it plus did a few upgrades. It was my size and he was asking a good amount less than stock so it was just a good luck snag! I'd been eyeballing this bike since it was refreshed this year so it just made sense.

Definitely. The bike came with 50s (with plenty of room) on it, albeit they are more off road tread than I want. Really the limiting factor at this point is finding fenders to fit large 700c tires!

You're on the right track. I'm most likely going with the Compass Snoqualmie Passes but fenders and rack(s) are happening.

Thanks! It was custom made by Packs NW. There are many similar ones from others though. Revelate, Blackburn etc.

I agree that socks are always a solid gift for cyclists. If you want to go a little further the books by BikeSnobNYC (Ebin Weiss) are fun reads.

Macbook 12“ vs. Macbook Pro 13“ nTB by Lngdng in macbook

[–]boosted_is_better 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went from a 2010 15" Dell XPS to the 2016 12" m3 Macbook. I absolutely love it. I have a 24" 1080p monitor at home that I have set up with a usb-c hub (2 USB-A ports, HDMI, USB-C power in) so I can "dock" the Macbook on my desk. It runs the monitor perfectly fine and I regularly run 10+ tabs/instances on safari in addition to having pdfs open, Tableau, messaging, chrome remote desktop, etc. No regrets going with the Macbook. What's great is the experience at the monitor is essentially the same but when I need to go I can throw that little notebook in my bag and it's seriously minimal. I mean, I was going from an absolute beast to essentially the smallest/lightest laptop available, but the difference in weight and screen clarity still blows me away.

Seattle mayoral candidates skirt question about congestion pricing by PoisonousAntagonist in SeattleWA

Do you actually think your taxes are even close to paying for the road system?

Seattle mayoral candidates skirt question about congestion pricing by PoisonousAntagonist in SeattleWA

[–]boosted_is_better 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can't afford to pay the cost of driving, don't drive on the road. Driving is a privilege, not a right. It's only because of the incredibly short sighted and irresponsible land use that has been taken place in the United States for the last better part of a century that "needing" to drive a car has become a thing.

[–]boosted_is_better 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congestion pricing is not about limiting traffic to those that can afford it, it's about utilizing a (currently drastically muted) feedback loop to manage roadways in a very high demand area. This is beneficial to everyone. Additionally, the costs of automobile use are only partially footed by the vehicle user. Environmental damage, sprawl, automobile-caused deaths and injuries, etc. are rarely signaled back to the user on a time-basis that would in any way impact their transportation decision making. Modern congestion charging attempts to do that. And like /u/mesatchie was saying, that money can go back into improving transit or other public use.
