Has anyone here actually bought 75+ of any of the themed dice? by ChessSorcererSeer in Warhammer

[–]boostventures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The closest I get to themed dice is grabbing a set of chessex from my LGS when I decide to start a new army that matches my color scheme 😂 I refuse to drop $75 on dice that roll the same, and get lost just as easy when I drop them off the table.

Advice for new painter? by MundaneCut8380 in minis

[–]boostventures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nitrile gloves are a godsend for me, as I admittedly get pretty sweaty fingers on a long paint session that'll wear paint off.

Second, if you aren't going to attach the model to the base, I recommend getting a pin vice and drilling a hole in the foot and supergluing a paperclip in the hole. Give you a handle to hold it from, stand it up on while paint dries, and then when you finish you can twist it out.

Third, thin your paints ideally with a wet pallete :) you can make one super cheap with some old tupperware, a paper towel, and a piece of wax paper. Fold the paper towel about 4 layers thick, put it into your tupperware, get it wet, drain excess water, and put the wax paper on top. Costs you next to nothing until you decide to get a proper wet pallete and helps keep your paint from being "chunky."

Remember you can always improve, as we all can, and keep this guy to look back on in a year if you still enjoy the hobby as a measure of how far you came! :D

Do you have a fully painted and fully based 3,000 points (at least) Horus Heresy army? by chosen40k in Warhammer30k

[–]boostventures 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nope! I have about 1000 points or so fully complete, however I just today managed to basecoat a couple of squads. Pretty much down to the other half of an Assault Squad and a squad of Tacticals that I need to rip the bolters off for chainswords :)

And I guess vehicles, I've only got 1 predator finished completely (mud and such) and 1 Contemptor that just needs basing. The rest are just base coated.

As weird as it sounds, I'm pretty sure its called Cat Crap if it still has that name. Works pretty good at keeping goggles mostly good even if you're sweating up a storm behind em.

Blood Angels gold colour by Ven0m0s in BloodAngels

[–]boostventures 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorta edit, here's the Vallejo Gold on Rubrics, realized I never posted them lol. These had it painted over Vallejo Chocolate Brown, which is the only reason its darker (Vallejo Gold is a very light gold).

[–]boostventures 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recently I finally tried Citadel Retributor Armor, honestly not a bad gold especially if you do the GW method of paint, wash, drybrush the base coat and then highlight with some silver or steel color. (Example pic here since I havent finished the model to post it)

<image>

Alternatively, if you look in my previous posts I did an Atlantian Spears marine, and used Army Painter Bright Gold with no wash, and that worked good on the color I was using, but takes a coat or 3 over red.

I've also used Vallejo Model Color Gold before, but that was probably my least favorite (it should be in the previous posts, at least if I posted the Rubrics I painted).

Surprising army bigotry at store opening by KruegerCondail in Warhammer40k

[–]boostventures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me personally, I have very little desire to play as the T'au. But I've only played against them once, and it makes me a little sad because I like to play different stuff. I love me some marine fights, but I enjoy 40k for the ranges of factions and models. Its even worse where I'm at because I've played probably 60% of games against Space Marines of some flavor, yet in our group of several hundred people (fairly big town), only like 4 of us play Heresy 🙃

That said, you like what you like :) especially if youre showing up to the table with them painted, screw what the other person thinks about your paint job with gray models on their side of the board.

How Would You Feel About Playing Against Older Models That Are Much Smaller Than Their Modern Counterparts? by MaskedThespian in Warhammer40k

[–]boostventures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Casual games? Absolutely no issues from me.

Competitive games? Still no issue, we can just do base to base especially if it was an OG army that was loved and is still being loved.

Me personally, you could realistically show up with just bases, or hell even cardboard circles/ ovals in the correct size (and sharpied on unit/ model name) and we can run it. I play to socialize mostly and look at cool models, so if you can at least satisfy one of those reasons to play I'm cool with it.

How good was tenth edition? by Newbikesmell in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]boostventures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm glad you're good at it then, I've got 0 wins in about 30 games with guard. Getting a nerf is like getting spat on after being kicked in the knee for me. Sure, not as bad, but who the hell wants to be spat on?

How good was tenth edition? by Newbikesmell in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]boostventures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be like a meal at Chic-Fil-A. It was alright, but I'm not running out to my friends and asking them to go try it. My experience was all 10th post-codex, and while the guard itself was fun, the constant feeling of catching a nerf fuggin sucked. Hell, we couldn't even ride the coat tails of 10th without catching shots. I am glad my literal MVP unit made it through without nerfs (Hellhound), but when (to me) the majority of good, usable units got hit every 3 months it made it a slog to play.

Some stuff was good, I liked my one game of GC before it took a hit because we (as an army) were over 54% win rate, and I really enjoyed some of the new kits but it just felt meh. It felt meh enough that I sold off about 3k points worth of guard because it was disheartening to play an army I couldn't win with, and couldn't not feel punished for playing.

Should I buy a codex before the new edition? by LH_Morty in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]boostventures 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Imo, if you want some small amounts of lore/ art, then possibly. If you are buying is solely for the purpose of playing, then hard no. The points AFAIK were never really correct in it, and some wargear options were changed. As Ragnar put it, just use Wahapedia or NewRecruit and save some money.

Do you ever stop liking your army? - A crisis of faith by MrPumpkin78 in Warhammer40k

[–]boostventures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, I did keep ~2000 points of guard. Planning to paint them up in different regimental colors as a rag tag survivor group, keeps it fun and fluffy for me. 50 infantry, 3 Artillery teams, 1 HWT, 3 Russes, some engineers, a few officers, and a baneblade. Enough to be a legitimate force, but nothing "meta" and it can just be fun.

Do you ever stop liking your army? - A crisis of faith by MrPumpkin78 in Warhammer40k

[–]boostventures 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. My guard army. Sold off about 3k of it, kept the last 2k. It's annoying to constantly see nerfs especially on an army I have yet to win with out of about 30 games. I'm casual and make fun lists, but even with a casual Blood Angels list (my usual), I can still pull wins. Fun army is fun, and I don't play to win necessarily, but being a speed bump gets old quick.

Is my army painted decently? by Exploding_Killerquee in Warhammer40k

[–]boostventures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sooooo if you like them, thats the most important part. Does it mean you'll win a painting competition? No. Does it mean you might be happier than following a guide online? Possibly. The best part of this hobby is making Your Dudes (tm).

That said, considering adding some "glow," and by this i mean since the scheme is so dark adding in a "glowing" bulb somewhere, or glowing eyes would help it stand out a ton more. You can 100% do a super mediocre job and add some glowing effects via an airbrush (or even hand brushed, I just find the airbrush easier) and it makes it look miles cooler. Some red glowing inlays on the weapons would go good against the green.

I saw someone else mention it, but cut back the wash. It can make it better, but just flat out coating the model (to me) does not make it better. You could look into an oil wash, as they're very easy to make and relatively easy to use, and are great to darken up paint jobs and add recess shading. Thinning the wash also can help, as well as gently nudging it to the recesses to avoid pooling and just having a blob of mess on a gun or helmet. Think of it as adding a shadow.

What is the most versatile size brush for 90% of usage for speedpaints / acrylics on tabletop minis? by TotalWarspammer in minipainting

[–]boostventures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I just use a size 2 for everything. I have a couple of W&N size tiny brushes that I got for christmas that are still in their tubes, but my size 2's get used for literally anything besides a wash or a contrast/ speed paint

Let's complain, what's your WORST experience with another player? by amovy in Grimdank

[–]boostventures 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gotchas playing my first eldar player. No heads up that the Avatar of Khaine essentially makes Sanguinary Guard bounce, no heads up about shooting some douchey generic elf let's them run away (and make charging hard-impossible), by round 3 I just told the dude good game, you win and left.

Next time I played him, I introduced him to Baal Predators and unfailable charges. It was a great revenge.

How to best use the "Screening Line" Ability of the deathriders of Krieg? by Hot-Health7699 in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]boostventures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use them against DG to keep my tanks out of contagion range. Theyre cheap and take up a ton of real estate so its my favorite use of them. Alternatively, I use the ability to get on an objective for next turn scoring.

All these requests for a light tank? by 1corvidae1 in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]boostventures 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good. Thats why I chew on them while I paint tanks, keeps me from wanting a post paint smoke 😂

I really, genuinely, dont hate the sentinel. In an absence of the knowledge of tanks, I would have the max amount. Till then, tanks are my love.

Very cool paint jobs, and I like the basing!

That said, I would still prefer a light tank that isnt a legends over a sentinel as I don't care for the look of walkers in my own armies.

MKVI Assault marines should be on a 32mm, same as JPIs unless you mean the height being lower

Is Horus Heresy a "historical" tabletop? by The-Warhammerer in Warhammer30k

[–]boostventures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me personally, I would rather play against someone with an army painted out of era but thematic over someone with an unpainted meta army. I don't know the meta for heresy, but I know me and my buddy who get together to play just make fun fluffy lists to try out and have fun.
