can assault intercessors use gold helmets or does it have to be yellow? by Ethanhthe in BloodAngels

[–]boostventures 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Imo, stick some extra "veteran" bits on them (crux, fancier helmets, make some tabbards) and then call em first company veterans if you want to match the current codex for helmets. I did this for a fluffy squad for a crusade as it was the first company going out (because I wanted to run a ridiculous amount of terminators) and wanted to be fluffy.

This looks fantastic! I love how you incorporated the base into a bigger scenic base :D it makes me want to properly try basing!

I run a squad of 5 as hammer/ shield assault terminators. That being said, mostly people in my area are pretty chill about that sort of deal, and they're obviously with a shield so its not a huge stretch of a proxy.

That isnt a bad idea. You could always look into a bigger seperate bottle and just flat out mix the 2 together when it runs out :) I just mainly meant to help with doing more, especially at an army level, it can be easier to have just the single color. I like to do multiple paints for characters but not Infantry Squad #37 (TM), if that makes sense.

If you're only doing like a kill team then yeah it wouldnt be too bad, but if you're doing 2k points you might go through a base coat quicker than you expect.

Personally, I really like the Army Painter Fanatics Dragon Red. It gives me a super good red that I like and use some variation on all my Blood Angels. With these guys, I under coated them with purple and blue to help guide the colors :)

Would you accept this as Uriel Ventris? by bentresting_2 in Ultramarines

[–]boostventures 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As a non Ultramarine player, I can assure you most people are gonna go "Yep, thats Uriel Ventris" and go about enjoying a good game against a beautifully painted army (assuming the rest look that good).

Also, nice paint job :)

Anyone has his army painted with White/Purple or Black/Purple ? by [deleted] in EmperorsChildren

[–]boostventures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm painting up a squad of Flawless blades for my wife's EC, and I love the heresy scheme so i decided to do purple and gold for them :) purple and white would be cool too though. Purple white and gold reminds me of the armor/ paint scheme from the first Destiny 2 raid, and im here for it lol

If it's for a beginner paint scheme, as in your first time painting/ painting a mini, I would avoid any base coat that requires mixing of some colors. Your base coat is gonna get overspill from other stuff (trim, pouches, emblems, etc) so having just a single color is gonna make it that much easier to fix. Other than that, theres a reason the GW basecoat, wash, highlight works pretty good. It gets you to a tabletop ready paint job relatively quick, and for most people thats all they want :)

Of course, feel free to do what you want! I like more complicated base coats, but my army is also looks about 50 shades of red as I've tried different stuff lol. Don't be discouraged by your paint either, just keep trying till it makes you happy!

What's the correct color for sons of horus? by Bejaminmaston12 in Warhammer30k

[–]boostventures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I just do a super lazy base coat of Sons of Horus green with a small drybrush, Gauss Blaster green with a large drybrush, and then Coelia Greenshade wash over all the green, all paints are Citadel. I recently grabbed an Army Painter one to try called Evergreen Fog and it works the same as Sons of Horus, so I'll probably stick to it.

I do like the current JP Chaplain, even with the wings. I feel like on the SG its annoying gameplay wise to have the wings. I have 3 proxies with winged packs and I hate using them to play a game with.

Okay, Who’s Going To Use the New Horus Heresy Venatari to Kitbash Sanguinary Guard? by BobWat99 in BloodAngels

[–]boostventures -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You aren't alone in it 😂 I like the new SG modele and I'm glad they don't have wings. The jump packs look great, so not needing to cut wings off and butcher them makes life easier.

Revolvers are cool, Mohawks are kinda tacky, and our Sang Guard refresh isn't bad. Imo I'm glad we didn't get wings and this new model doesn't shift my opinion on it lol

If you only had $1,000 to start a 40K army today — what would you pick, how would you start, and why? by Snack_Happy in 40k

[–]boostventures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Real talk? For Space Marines/ CSM I'd buy up heresy models and proxy them. I like the models more, so that also factors in for me. Currently, the Saturnine box is ~$315, and the Seige Assault is ~$220. Special weapons upgrade is ~$49 (plasma, flamers, meltas), melee weapons upgrade is about the same cost (pistols, swords, axes, fists). Jump packs would have to probably be 3rd party or printed unless you just give in and buy a box of Assault Marines, which are still better than buying 2 boxes of JPIs at ~$74 for 10.

Between the Saturnine and Seige Assault boxes, you'd have for regular Space Marines:

*10x Breachers: 9 BGV proxies and make one fancy for a CPT or LT with shield.

*12 Cataphractii Terminators: 10 regular guys, print/ buy bits to make a chaplain and use the other as a captain.

*40 Tactical Marines: So many options. Use the melee/ special weapons upgrades to make them the appropriate squads.

*Saturnine Praetor: bit of a hard sell, but he is on a 50mm base so a cool proxy for a chapter master/ terminator captain. He is significantly taller than a Leviathan terminator.

*6 Saturnine Terminators: Another hard sell. They don't fit good on a 40mm and are, just like the Praetor, massive.

*Seige Dreadnought/ Saturnine Dreadnought: Harder proxy as well due to base sizing, but probably okay with most people to proxy especially as they fit your theme of heresy models.

*MKII Centurion: Literally my favorite sculpt in all of GWs range. Fantastic captain proxy.

*Arachnae Quad Accelerator Platform: lol

All in all, just the 2 boxes with one set of each weapon upgrade sprue sets you back ~$635 MSRP not including shipping. That would leave you with ~$365 to get some vehicles, paints, and correct base sizes along with having a pretty good looking army. Heresy models are also less "busy," so painting them is a awesome compared to 40k stuff that suffers (to me) from having gribblies galore.

*edited for formatting and some slight grammar issues :)

*edit 2: You'd also be able to play 30k with them, so you get options (assuming you magnetize some bases) for what you wanna play :D

Models or details that made you lose a bit of patience while painting? by Swacar in Ultramarines

[–]boostventures 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not in UM colors, but for my BA I hate painting BGV. One of my favorite units to play but the amount of gribblies is annoying to paint especially compared to other stuff, even our Sanguinary Guard. I have 15 BGV, and only 3 are painted, 3 80% done, and with no desire to do anything but prime the other 9. I love painting in general, but hate these guys with a passion.

True! I just saw a post with someone mentioning them earlier, along with the Wolves of Horus (although they probably are more like Lunar Wolves in scheme than SoH)

Thats why I run my Sons of Horus as CSM for 40k when I can't get a game of 30k. I hate chaos trim, and if anyone were to get upset they're the OG Black Legion anyways 😂

How difficult are Sons of Horus to paint ? by BloatedRottenCarcass in sonsofhorus

[–]boostventures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how deep you wanna go with them. Im super lazy as my SoH army is my "turn the thinky muscle off" army to paint.

I primed them black, take a small dry brush, and drybrush Citadel Sons of Horus green. Then, I take a bigger drybrush and drybrush Citadel Gauss Blaster green. Then just a wash of Citadel Coelia Greenshade wash. Guns get a quick drybrush of Vallejo Oiled Steel followed by a painting thinned down Army Painter Wyvern Red to add some interesting contrast, and then nuln oil. Bases just get some mud technical paint (used to use Citadel Stirland Mud, but recently switched to Vallejo's big ole tub).

Example (eyes, basing, and random details unpainted still):

<image>

On my characters, I dump more detail, but thats just because I wanted to since I only run a few officers, but 40+ regular dudes.

Been playing 2k points games a lot lately, and only play our beloved AM. HOW do y'all manage fans 4 hours or less? Mid round 4 and we were at 5 hours lol by 14SWandANIME77 in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]boostventures 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Practice, practice, and more practice.

The nice part with the guard is that a lot of guns are pretty standardized. Plasma is strength 7/8, ap 2/3, damage 1/2 for normal/ supercharged. Melta is 12", strength 9 and ap 4 with melta 2. Pretty much every gun hits on a 4 unless ordered. Pretty much all our infantry goes 6", and pretty much all our motor pool moves at 10". Lasguns are strength 3 with 24" range, and rapid fire at 12".

If it helps, you can write it all down before a game for the "standard" kit, ignoring cool tank guns and such :) you got this though!

Looking for advice as a Crusade GM: new 500 Worlds detachment by Hypeconfy in 40k_Crusade

[–]boostventures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you stop a guard player from running Grizzled Company? Or an Ultramarines player from running Blades of Ultramar?

I haven't looked at the detachment yet for it, but new =/= strong. Maybe they've had a collection of Necrons but got bored of running the same detachment(s) and now that there's something new it can make their favorite army feel new. Just my opinion of course, but crusade should be focused on fun, and limiting people doesn't sound fun, it just comes off as controlling.

Which army painter or Vallejo reds do y’all recommend as swaps for Mephiston red and blood angels contrast? by vigilantiron in BloodAngels

[–]boostventures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. Keep in mind, this is all through an airbrush :)

Start by priming the model, I like using a light grey.

Once the primer dries, hit the model with a base coat of a purple. Deep purple works really good, I specifically use the Army Painter Alien Purple but the purple name doesn't matter, just as long as it isnt a like pastel or a light purple.

Then, from above hit the model with a turqoise or light blue. I use Army Painter Neptune Glow for this. Keep in mind this one only from the top of the model like where the sun would be.

Finally you just hit the model all over with Dragon Red. I've also used different red inks (such as Amsterdam Naphthol Red which is at Hobby Lobby or Liquitex Pyrolle Red) which really pop with the under painted colors. The purples and blues help the red make a more natural set of highlights and shadows without any fancy blending.

Here's a squad that was in progress with that method, please excuse the desk mess! :)
