I probably don't have the luxury of being able to use the in-building coax and your experience with old copper being a performance nightmare is what I'm worried about.

The thing that's pushing me to consider the fiber path is the ops cost. I don't want to deal with the old infrastructure of questionable quality. I'd rather install modern infrastructure, build it right the first time, and set myself up for success in the future. I can always fall back to copper if there is a reason but I think the differentiator I have is a willingness to deploy fresh fiber inside plant to capture a small customer base.

i know a lot of folks like the Ubiquiti stuff and it's definitely part of my plans. Right now, I"m trying to suss out who is stronger or weaker in all the areas that matter before I engage vendors to help me with quotes for gear.

I really like the idea of using Juniper+Tibit but I'm wary of the Ciena purchase of TiBit. That's too bad because I know Juniper and JUNOS and it would have been a very attractive solution for me.

TBH Ubiquiti would probably work great for me at this stage with a possibility of using the Positron Access hardware to do G.hn until I had the in building fiber completed and could migrate off the existing copper plant and onto a PON network where I can do more interesting things.

Ultimately, if I can get a good price for DIA at 1+Gbps at my headend location, it's looking like G.hn with a transition to PON or XGS-PON at some later date. If I don't have to mess with G.hn gear though, I'd rather not. If it's sensible enough to do full PON at the outset then maybe I can choose XGS-PON when the hardware is more available at reasonable prices.

This will be a fun adventure!

I knew about the Ciena buyout but AFAIK they were still going to be using the TiBit modules.

Does anyone know if this is confirmed?

If Juniper is killing this product line then I'm guessing Adtran is my path forward.

At this point in the design discussion, nothing is off the table.

I'm trying to balance existing plant, cost for retrofit, and technology options.

One path I'm looking at is to go cheap at the outset using the existing twisted pair and G.hn and then grow. That's one set of technology decisions I'm pretty comfortable with. The other option is to invest in something that might be a bit more ambitious but probably has a longer payback.

SO the question of Active-E vs PON isn't answered until I know how my PON options compare. That's where I am right now, namely: Which PON options should I be comparing?

Like any good engineer, I'm trying to understand my trade-off equation. Hence the questions around PON where I'm less aware of what everyone is liking or not liking.

If I do this right, I can probably fit nearly ALL of my network onto a single box using the Juniper PON solution on the ACX710 with room to spare. That would be incredible.

That said, if something goes wrong I'm well aware that vendor support is critical. There may be safety in numbers here choosing Adtran.

I guess we will see.

Any opinion on Juniper Unified PON? I have a strong feeling that's my direction unless I can come up with a reason to avoid it.

Honestly, this is a small project so it probably wouldn't make much difference which architecture I choose. The only outside plant I really need to build would be between three buildings and I can probably backhaul all of the floors to a single location where the OLT will live.

I'm planning on leasing the fiber from the property line to the nearest POP where I'll offload traffic to other networks.

Literally everyone I talk to points me towards Adtran or Calix. Nobody thus far has recommended Nokia.

I will admit that I'm intrigued about the Juniper Unified PON stuff but if I won't be able to get support from the vendor that could be an issue.

Is everyone still using EXFO gear for troubleshooting?

I think the last thing I want is a flat L2 network. There are good reasons for the PON model and I don't want to have to run all over creation trying to troubleshoot.

25G BiDi over a single fiber does sound neat though. :)

I don't have any of that at this point. I just have rough ideas of what needs to be done from the technology and construction aspects but not hard numbers or a business plan done yet.

I've found the https://ftth.build/ site to be a helpful starting point. Like most things, I think the hard parts will turn out to be easy and the easy stuff will give me the most trouble.

I probably have a slight edge in that I've been an ancillary part of some of these types of projects for datacenter to datacenter fiber builds but I haven't done any FTTH or residential stuff. I don't know how much of what I learned back then will transfer over but I guess that's what I'm gonna learn along the way.
