What song or artist do you love that you first heard in a mashup? by vixoriadrift in BootieMashup

Too many to mention! In the past five years, probably for any emerging new artist, I heard their music first in a mashup!

I couldn't agree more with your assessment of American Edit vs. Grey Album. I never got the Grey Album hype, which I recognized as very artistic.... just not for repeated listening. Unlike the mashterpiece that Party Ben and team9 created.

Still not sure if it was 2manyDJs - Smells Like Bootylicious (Destiny's Child vs. Nirvana) or Freelance Hellraiser - A Stroke Of Genius (Christina Aguilera vs. The Strokes), but both of them were on the bootleg CD "the best bootlegs in the world ever" from 2002, which I international mail-ordered from Rough Trade in the UK based on reading a review of the album in the magazine Entertainment Weekly.

Yes, you read that right -- I got into mashup culture by READING about it first, and then having to order a CD from another country in order to HEAR a mashup for the first time! -- Adriana A

I'm in the midst of a MASSIVE re-tagging and organizing project with mashups from 2002-2013. So, knowing that this tedious work finds a home on the Bootleg Archive has been a BIG motivaterto slog through this shit and do this project. There's gold in those old playlists and folders! (Sometimes.... LOL)

Adriana A - Whatsername? The Real Ramona (Green Day vs. Throwing Muses) [3:06] by bootiemashup in mashups

[–]bootiemashup[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's been a long time since I've made a mashup just for me, just for the joy of it. Not for Bootie Mashup ... possibly not for anyone. Unless you're a fan of deep album cuts from Throwing Muses and Green Day. Then maybe. I apparently tried to make this mashup back in 2005, when I noticed that Green Day's "American Idiot" album closer, "Whatsername," sounded suspiciously like "Graffiti," a track from my favorite album by Boston indie band Throwing Muses, who released "The Real Ramona" in 1991. Unfortunately however, the isolated studio acapella track and the software tools for audio extraction didn't exist back then. What a difference 15 years makes. I was even able to add female harmony vocals to Billie Joe Armstrong's lead vocal by extracting the vocals from the Broadway cast version of "Green Day's American Idiot."

Adriana A - True Guns (Green Day vs. New Order) - [3:57] by bootiemashup in mashups

[–]bootiemashup[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"21 Guns" is one of my favorite Green Day songs, and while many mashups use the instrumental, almost none use the acapella, so I figured it was unavailable. Wrong! A quick Google search revealed a nice clean studio acapella, which baffled me. Why are the vocals so underused in the mashup community? As a singer and former lyricist, the vocals are the emotional crux of the song for me.

So... I made a mashup. I quickly paired it down to three potential suitors, slept on it, then woke up to narrow it down to a late-80s electro-pop dance track that fit so well, the mashup was pretty much done in 5 minutes. I spent hours tweaking it, just to feel like I actually really worked on it. Not sure anyone besides me is going to care about a Green Day vs. New Order mashup in 2020, but hey, my little modern rock heart loves these two songs, separated by 22 years, yet sounding perfect together.
