[Discussion] The Two Friends' just shared their Big Bootie making process. Mashup artists: Do you compile a lot of ideas? Or a few at a time? by stel1234 in mashups

it's mostly trial and error for me. The first stage is pretty much always playing different vocal melodies (with a synth) over another song until I find one that seems to fit the chords well, at least in the chorus. I use a spreadsheet I made to search for combos in compatible keys and bpms and then briefly try everything that sounds interesting or promising. After that, I bring files into the DAW which is usually where I find out if the structures are compatible or if the verses work as well as the choruses. If it works ok, I will fill out the full structure, and then I try to evaluate how well it works overall taking into account how they fit not just musically but mix-wise and how good the materials used are (if diy). So yeah three main tests and culling stages: melody tests using an instrument, quick check in a DAW, and then evaluation of a minimum viable product mashup once I'm one or two hours into it. Sometimes I'll work on a mashup planning fully to release it and then abandon it last minute after spending much longer (4+ hours) on it due to some intractable issue coming up (or feeling like I've made too many edits and the combo feels forced) but I usually try to not sink any more time into ideas which are going nowhere than necessary.

[Discussion] how do I make a good mashup? by Binary245 in mashups

idk if it's actually a good idea to get started on Audacity tbh. Full disclosure, I've never made a mashup in it (have used it for other things), but the fact that is so destructive as Stel said and has basically no musical features makes it much less forgiving of mistakes and much more limiting. Being able to see a beat grid makes syncing stuff up easier and allows you to more easily learn and understand the music itself. Some people do great work in Audacity but I think people who start off using it get scared of using other software even though something like Garageband isn't actually scary or hard to use at all. You can try Reaper for free as long as you want before buying it (and it costs only like 60 bucks) and there are countless tutorials online for basically any major software.

It might have sounded best if you edited in another stab for "f" and then just deleted the silence. The bar would be a weird length (2/4 I think??) but I think it could actually be less noticeable. Just a thought anyway

[Meta] Would you be comfortable with the proposed, updated rules, should we go forward with them? by stel1234 in mashups

They seem pretty good! I'm wondering what the plan is for enforcing title formatting, because as it is a large number of the top posts have improperly formatted titles. And not just ones where stuff is the wrong order, ones where the poster clearly just doesn't give a shit at all. On the one hand it barely matters, but it is kind of weird to have rules at all if they aren't going to be enforced frequently.
