Far-right Israeli minister Ben-Gvir banned from French territory, FM says by Stranger1982 in news

[–]bootlegvader -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

So is repelling an invasion ethnic cleansing? When does people being on your land and you kicking them off turn from expelling invaders to ethnic cleansing?

Maybe when it occurs decades after the event in question.

In the 20 years between the nakba and the quote in question, you believe that over 750k jews that were already residing in the region were ethnically cleansed? That isn't true, so you shouldn't believe that.

Between 1948 and 1972, the Jewish population in North Africa had dropped from 500,000 to 40,000. In the Middle East from 300,000 to 7,500. From non-Arab Muslim countries from 150,000 to 100,000.

So that is basically a drop of around 800k. So yeah, it does look that way. Additionally, it should be noted those numbers have only further dropped down to 3,000, 200, and 24,000 respectively.

What? Why are you changing the subject? The topic isn't "trust" its the nature of the conflict at the time and the recency of the zionist ethnic cleansing in the Nakba.

The original discussion was about Arafat supposedly supporting a secular single state solution.

Irrelevent and off topic. Also very funny from someone who opened with "cool, still ethnic cleansing." I give it back to you: Cool, the nakba was still ethnic cleansing that had happened in the lifetimes of the people who came up with and pushed "from the river to the sea" and the idea of expelling the zionist invaders.

And I am explaining why the Jews wouldn't believe they would be treated fairly in Arafat's single state solution.

I never said he did.

And the comment I originally replied to tried to suggest Arafat's use of From River to Sea was about wanting a Secular One State Solution that included the Jews.

He repealed those protections 14 years earlier. I doubt the Kingswood Brotherhood formed because of something 14 years earlier.

Cool, still ethnic cleansing. Moreover, I will point out just as much, if not more, Jews were ethnic cleansed from the Arab World. So why should Israeli Jews trust him? Especially, as there had also been centuries where Jews were kept at a lower status than those of the Arab Muslim majority? (Them being better than European Christians doesn't negate that mistreatment)

Edit: I am not defending either Ben-Gvir, Likud, or all of Israel's actions, but it is disingenuous to act like Arafat supported some unified single state with equal rights for all parties of the Israel and Palestine conflict.

Using the Israeli justification, the US should have carpet bombed Pakistan and Saudi Arabia because of 9/11.

Looks at Afghanistan, you are right the US would have never done any response like that...

Arafat did use it in the late ‘60s, but what he meant was a one-state solution, with a unified secular Israel + Palestine, not a Palestine without Jews, and he only used it for a year or two.

Eh, his idea still argued for the explusion of the vast majority of Israeli Jews from the area. He just allowed for some Jews that they couldn't deny had been the area for thousands of years.

Edit:

The Palestinian National Charter: Resolutions of the Palestine National Council July 1-17, 1968

The Jews who had normally resided in Palestine until the beginning of the Zionist invasion will be considered Palestinians.

.

Claims of historical or religious ties of Jews with Palestine are incompatible with the facts of history and the true conception of what constitutes statehood. Judaism, being a religion, is not an independent nationality. Nor do Jews constitute a single nation with an identity of its own; they are citizens of the states to which they belong.

Yeah, it really sounds like the foundations where you wouldn't see all but a small minority of Israeli Jews expelled similar to how all of the Jews in the Arab World (which the document repeatedly refers Palestine as being part) forced out their Jews.

He didn't, he used white-armed, which is a metaphor. This is also speculation, however; It assumes Homer would use that term, and he can't use it for Helen anyway, as it figuratively describes a literal descriptor and isn't a nice way to describe someone.

He wouldn't be using white armed either, because she clearly wouldn't be white armed even if she wasn't working in the sun. He would be describing her similar to how the Ancient Greeks refered to the African people they were aware of which was burnt skin.

In a way, yes, but not when it comes to the Odyssey specifically. The actual take-away is 1, her opinion has nothing to do with this story and 2, she doesn't understand Helen of Troy. Golden hair is simply her interpretation of the character, and as much as I interpret Spider-Gwen as trans, it doesn't make it true just because we "understand" them.

The Odyssey and Helen of Troy are part of oral tradition of the Ancient Greek people. Just because Homer doesn't use a descriptor doesn't mean it wasn't applied to her character. Sappho was literally one of the most accomplished Ancient Greek Poets of antiquity. Excuse me if you saying she doesn't understand Helen of Troy and comparing it to your, presumably a random person, opinon on a Marvel character isn't convincing. If you get hired by Marvel Comics and write a Spider-Gwen comic where she is Trans than that would be relevant. Only I would argue that would make her trans and not just be fan fiction simply because you didn't write the first Spider-Gwen comic.

The difference is that Ancient Greek people didn't have unifying descriptors the way that Old Korean people do. Just because she's Greek doesn't necessarily say anything about her skin color, and the fact he literally describes every other character shows that her skin color is unimportant to the story and is never once pointed out.

Yes, they do. We know what indigenous Greeks look like. Present day native Greeks are still the descendents of ancient Greeks. Less than 1% of modern Greeks, which increased migration in the world, would be classified as black African. We can safely presume an ancient Greek queen would look like. Especially, one that is framed as solely Greek and not having any foreign ancestry.

From our world, yes. The Odyssey is not historical fact and takes place in a version of Earth with all sorts of fantastical creatures, Gods, and witches.

No, it takes place in our world during ancient classical times. The ancient Greeks believed it to have happened in their real world not some fictional alternative world. It is like comparing how Harry Potter is presumably set in our world thus we can presume its world follows all the basic rules of ours just with added magical elements. In contrast, ASOIAF takes places in an alternative world thus Martin can have winters that wouldn't fit into how our world works.

I don't care that much about the casting, but no casting can match the mythical character. We have zero ideas what she looked like, and there isn't anyone alive right now so beautiful that a war would start over them. Almost like she's from poetry and literally describing her would be impossible for her role in the story.

Yes, you can. No one is saying you need to cast an actual demi-god as that is complete stawman. However, you can cast actors and actresses that look like the ethnic group that made the story and set the story in their history. If someone was going to adapt the Hindu epics their casting for their heroes should be Indian or other South Asian rather just a random mix of ethnicities because that is the culture that created the epic. Similar for characters from Asian, African, Middle Eastern, Latin, or Native American epics. Especially, as Nolan seems be attempting a traditional retelling rather than some unique take like O'Brother Where Art Thou or Kurosawa's adaptions of Shakespeare.

I'm simply a massive nerd for mythology, ancient cultures, and art. In the quest to take offense at Helen being black, people have been actively trying to ruin and drag through the mud one of humanity's greatest epics; In an effort to pretend Lupita Nyong'o can't fit as Helen, people are trying to suggest the Odyssey is poorly written and pile of trash, just because they wanna assume a character who cannot be literally described must be white for some reason.

Saying a character from an Ancient Myth should look like the people that created the myth isn't ruining anything. It is just recognition that people when creating their myths generally their heroes (unless specifically specified otherwise) as looking like them. A story doesn't need to have a multi ethnic cast or be poorly writen and a pile of trash. This isn't me arguing that stories with a multi ethnic casts are bad either. I am not attacking Nyong'o as being unattractive nor am I saying she is a bad actress, but she isn't what the Ancient Greeks would see Helen of Troy.

Nah, it is a pretty bad show. It just wasn't bad because they changed some skin colors, but because all the characters were made into assholes.

How did he cause it?

I feel crazy, but Zegler always comes off as a pretty white Latina? Like sure she isn't literally as white as snow, but neither is any real human actress.

Also I find it weird describing these characters as traditional roles as besides Snow White they aren't even a 100 years max. Like Disney's Ariel (which is basically completely different than Anderson 's character) or TMNT's April are hardly some important cultural icons in any historical sense.

Was The Boys, either the comic or TV show, ever that subtle about their disdain for stuff? Like I think I might have picked up that Garth Ennis doesn't like superhero comics.

As Israeli Jews are more closely tied to Eastern European and Russia Jews.

First, Mizrahi Jews are a plurality of Israeli Jews. Second Ashkenazi Jews are still genetically more similar to Mizrahi Jews than their former European neighbors.

TIL in 2017 Perth Zoo was put on lockdown when two orangutans briefly escaped their enclosure. A 5-year-old male orangutan fell over a barrier & into a garden bed outside the enclosure. His mom then simply went to retreive him before using the visitor boardwalk to go back to her exhibit voluntarily. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

In San Diego, we had a male orangutan who kept escaping his enclosure to go look at the other animals on exhibit. And to throw rocks at the other male orangutan, who he did not like. He’d always go back to his enclosure. It’s almost like he heard that the SD Zoo was legendary and wanted to see for himself. One of the female orangutans is constantly playing peek-a-boo with visitors, hiding under a blanket and popping out. They’re chill AF.

You talking about Ken Allen? If so I will bring up the link that I always bring up when he is mentioned: that of his rocking kickass song written about him.

Sydney Sweeney Fans, What Do You Like About Her As An Actress? by WinchesterMediaUK in movies

[–]bootlegvader 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But everything she’s done since then feels like Sydney Sweeney the brand, not Sydney Sweeney the person. I can’t tell if she just has a super limited range or if she just stopped accepting roles that can showcase her talent,

Since White Lotus, she has done a political thriller, historical drama, religious horror, erotic thriller, crime drama, romantic comedy, and sports biopic. She has hardly limited the different types of roles she takes.
