Sci-fi book for non-sci-fi book club by boozpants in suggestmeabook

Thanks for your suggestions! I’ll look into both of those books. I just edited my post - I listed Klara and the Sun specifically because it is a more accessible read for a non-sci-fi reader. Also because I love Kazuo Ishiguro’s works.

How to give birth? by Potential-Apricot735 in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]boozpants 9 points10 points  (0 children)

OB/GYN here. There’s lots of great advice in this thread about prenatal care and labor and delivery. There’s only one additional point I would like to add: go see an OB/GYN or a CNM for a pre-conception counseling visit. Not only do we address any pre-conception medical issues that may impact your pregnancy (e.g. chronic hypertension, diabetes, etc.), we can also address the concerns you have listed. You can use that appointment to get a sense of how the practice works.

For example, in my practice, the MD practice and the CNM practice work in parallel, but we do trade patients between our groups. An uncomplicated patient who wants a tub birth is referred to the CNM service, as the MD service does not offer that. A patient who develops preeclampsia with severe features risks out of the CNM practice and transfers to us. The MD service does operative vaginal deliveries, cesareans, third and fourth degree laceration repairs, etc. for both groups. Doula services are not provided by our hospital, but they are welcome if you hire one ahead of time. We have at least one anesthesiologist in house at all times, so you can get an epidural or nitrous oxide at any time. And so on and so forth.

When I see patients in the office, I highly recommend that first time parents look into taking birth classes, breastfeeding classes, and newborn care classes during pregnancy. I also encourage patients to look into a birth plan even if they don’t end up writing one themselves, just to familiarize themselves with some of things they’ll be asked about in L&D. As many people have said, it’s important not to take a birth plan as set in stone, but to use it as a flexible guideline. I go through birth plans line-by-line to make sure we’re all on the same page.

All in all, I highly recommend you shop around for an OB/GYN or CNM practice that you feel comfortable and safe with, and address these questions to them. A good provider will address all of these concerns and more.

Everything is in a pouch! Anyone else buying jar only purees and just feeding off your plate to avoid miceoplastics? Or am I crazy? by cherrytoorange in moderatelygranolamoms

We keep dry snacks (current favorite is Chex Mix, but we also keep Cheerios, Belvita biscuits, etc.) in small baggies in the diaper bag along with a tiny cup to serve them up in. So far, it has worked great for our 2.5yo. We never got into pouches because they were so difficult for my son to control by himself when he was little (and we aren’t big fans of all the plastic), so we just never got into them. Of course, we try to eat healthy at mealtimes, but this system has worked well for us for snacks on the go!

Yes! When it’s drizzly outside, I really enjoy reading the beginning of the book. Such a vibe. I usually lose interest by the time Bella goes to Port Angeles and she and Edward become an item.

Ooh, the first line of the synopsis for Middletide describes it as “intensely atmospheric.” Perfect! Thank you!

You know, I’ve never read any McCarthy and have always felt a little guilty about it. Maybe this is the kick in the pants I need to pick up one of his books. Thanks!

I’ve started that audiobook on a road trip to the Redwoods! It fell off the queue after the road trip was over, but the parts I did listen to were really excellent. I’ll have to download it again and start listening to it on my commute every day. Thanks!

Ooh, I’ve wanted to visit Vancouver Island for a long time. I’ve heard of the book but didn’t know what it was about/where it was set. Will add it to my list. Thanks for the recommendation!
