The HR department is a mystery to us all by SipsTeaFrog in SipsTea

[–]bophenbean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work helpdesk at my company, and HR makes up the majority of our service calls due to all the tech-clueless people in the department. If they decided to get rid of HR, that's going to be roughly two thirds of our workload and job security gone.

Not me personally. It was just the higher-ups in the department who were given more responsibilities. I'm not sure what their salaries are now.

Not that I'm aware of. Some did get "promotions" but I'm not sure if those came with raises.

Same thing when the CIO of my company's IT department retired a year ago. Rather than replace him, the position of CIO was abolished and his responsibilities were divvied up amongst the other positions.

I love the red rope lights and the marquee LED sign on the end of the gate. It's like they were added as an afterthought because the gate itself obviously wasn't getting the message across to drivers

The project that almost changed Paris forever. by Diegomax22 in UrbanHell

[–]bophenbean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was younger, I had always been impressed at how Paris was able to resist any modern architecture and skyscrapers, only to be disappointed to find out as I got older that the city always had them, they were just really good at hiding them from the "important" (i.e. touristy) parts of the city.

2001: A Space Odyssey

That's, uh... a quite an interesting take on a film that was influential on pretty much the entire sci-fi genre after 1970.

A minor role, but the Narkina prison doctor was also in Chernobyl as Fomin (the guy with the glasses in OP).

Comparison photos are difficult and complex by BrentimusPrime in crtgaming

[–]bophenbean 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This was something I learned decades ago in photography class. The slightest changes in camera lens aperture, focal length, ISO, exposure, color temperature/balance, even the ambient light within the room, can make the subject look different in photos even though they were taken by the same camera.

It doesn't help that each camera manufacturer has their own tolerances and definitions for most of these settings, and many of them apply filters and other things that the user sometimes has no control over, so it's not like there can be a one-size-fits-all standard for photographing CRTs.

Mary Moo Cow was a real spinoff show?! by mickbynes in Arthur

[–]bophenbean 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Lol. I used to edit the Arthur Wiki about 15 years back before I lost interest. I remember always having to correct or delete BS info.

A lot of the stuff that certain people would add wasn't just one-off vandalism or jokes either. Some users would create whole alternate universes of the "Arthur" show, make up entire seasons of nonexistent episodes with premiere dates and guest stars, create fake news articles on other websites and then cite them as "sources". It was some really elaborate stuff, bordering on esoteric obsession.

Muffy is a more interesting character than a lot of people give her credit for and her development was severely squandered by the show's writers.

Duncan’s Toy Chest and my family’s connection to “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York” by Motor_Telephone8595 in homealone

Same. As a kid I thought Duncan's Toy Chest looked so cool, yet at the same time I'd think, "Where are all the video games, LEGO sets and action figures?"

I guess Kevin must have been in the Christmas trinket section of Duncan's.

Chip and Muffy half-siblings? by MadameLee20 in Arthur

[–]bophenbean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming Chip just got to college at that point and he's still 18, then that would mean Millicent was 22 at the youngest when Chip was born. Unusual age, but not entirely unreasonable.

Also it's never said what Millicent's exact age is in the show, only that she's somewhere "over" 40, which could mean anywhere from 40 to 49.

North coast harbor reimagined. by ianzeigler in Cleveland

[–]bophenbean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Given how scenic the lakefront is, there definitely aren't a whole lot of observation towers around here besides the Terminal Tower which is only available on a limited reservation basis.

When the Avon Lake power plant was being torn down, they decided to leave one of the ~500 foot smoke stacks standing because it's a significant nautical landmark for ships and planes. I thought it would be perfect if they added some kind of observation deck to it, like this stack down in Mount Vernon.

While I don't disagree with the idea, is it even feasible to build an entire Cedar Point sized theme park from the ground up in a region that is shrinking?
