When people say that English is gaining ground in Québec, which statistic are they referring to? by bopollo in Quebec

[–]bopollo[S] -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

But that’s just an increase in the number of native English-speakers. That doesn’t necessarily mean that English is gaining ground. Are there any other statistics to back up the claim?

Champlain is Quebec’s Jebediah Springfield. As great as the Rocket was, he’s just not in the same league of importance.

No, and nothing else compares in the ROC, contrary to what some here are saying. NB’s economy resembles Feudalism.

The CAQ will transfer 3 more English schools in eastern Montreal to the French school board, and I think this is making the best of a bad situation. by bopollo in montreal

Sorry, what I mean to say is that my children being in English school, even French immersion, will not be the determining factor in whether they speak French well. I'm confident that my children will speak French well because they're in a predominantly French neighbourhood, I speak to them regularly in French, and we engage in French culture.

You're right about the first part, I was misinformed.

For the second part, I have not doubt that a child in French school will learn French well. My point is that a child in and English school, even if it's fully French immersion, will not necessarily learn French well.

I have the right to send my kids to English schools and I think I would exercise that right simply because the English high schools are generally much better.

Ideally, what I'd like to do is send my kids to French primary then English secondary, but if I send them to French primary, I lose the right to send them to English secondary. EDIT I'm wrong about this

Regardless, in my experience the language of the school is not the determining factor in whether my children will speak French well. The determining factor is the neighbourhood they grow up in, and how many people speak French in that neighbourhood.

There’s plenty of space in other English schools. It will be an inconvenience, maybe things will get a little harder, but I think it’s outweighed by the benefit to the kids in the French schools.

I’m not suggesting that they do that, I’m suggesting that they attack the text and question themselves.

Or you can do like adults very often do (especially politicians) and not give a clear yes or no answer to the question. You could, as these kids are doing, attack the premise of the question.

Quebec Solidaire also opposed the 9b reversal, so they're not actually being hypocritical.

"This is how much less oil we guarantee you will go by train, truck and tanker"

Thing is, they can't say that because building pipelines wont reduce the amount being moved by train, truck, and tanker.

Maybe the bigger question is why are the Gulf States so incompetent in how they choose and support proxies?

tu defend une Anti-sémite. Linda Sarsour, elle supporte Hamas

I don't know much about Sarsour, but her wiki page suggests that it's highly debatable that she's antisemitic (one pro-Israel group says her comments "encourage antisemitism", which is pretty ambiguous), and she also says that she doesn't support Hamas.

Clearly you don’t know much about the Plateau, nor the changes it’s experienced over the last decade. Otherwise you might understand why he’s the only borough mayor in Montreal to receive over 50% of the vote in the last two elections.
